Where does your NHL team fall in your cities sports hierarchy

Recommended Posts

The guys and I were talking about where hockey falls in the sports hierarchy in US cities, they are huge BBall guys and say no way hockey is more popular in any city that has both sports, I disagreed.

NFL is king, but where does hockey fall in the pyramid with the NBA, MLB and NCAA.

Obviously in the 6 CDN cities, it is number 1, but I am Curious George about where hockey falls in your US city (if you live in a city with a team)

The Bruins are 4th in Boston and only one of two things can change that; Stanley Cup or Jacobs sells the team.

Red Sox

Patriots

Celtics

Bruins

Bucs

Yankees

Red Sox

Rays

UF

Magic

USF

Lightning

Kinda depends on who's winning at the time but no matter what, Bucs are seemingly #1.

Phillies

Eagles

Flyers

Sixers

Not sure why the Sixers even have a team anymore.

Philly used to be a football town. I really think that the reason the Eagles announced the McNabb trade when they did was to try and take attention away from the Phillies opener, because they can't handle the fact that this city is now a baseball city.

Falcons

Tennessee football

Nascar

Hawks

GT football

Thrashers

I left out all of the Out-of Region teams that people cheer for because they moved to ATL from whatever hellishly cold northern city they were raised in.

Montreal Canadiens

Montreal Alouettes (CFL)

Montreal Impact (soccer)

Ottawa Senators

Ottawa 67's

I live in Gatineau minutes from Ottawa but Montreal (2 hours away) is and has been my favorite team since the late 70's.

My best guess:

Michigan

Lions

Pistons (Led NBA in attendance last year, though I can't think of a single big-time fan among my friends)

Tigers

Red Wings (Tough call. Most years, they're the only ticket in town. But Detroit sports fans seem to be loyal to their losers).

Michigan State

Not surprising that most American cities have the NHL ranked lowest but I still am shocked to see how little fanfare the Wings get in Detroit. $44 for 2 tickets, 2 hot dogs, and 2 beers and they just won the cup a season ago. I'd kill for a deal like that out here, but unfortunately it'd be so popular I'd never get my hands on it. Sorry if I sound like a broken record for constantly bringing this up but it kills me to think of what I could be paying to see teams other than the Canucks (who aren't always exciting).

Like I said, it was a tough call. I was SHOCKED when I went to the Palace (for a Taylor Swift concert <3) and saw the attendance banner listing an NBA-best attendance last year.

I just don't think I can objectively say that hockey takes precedence over the other major sports here.

There is a strange dynamic I've noticed where teams that ride on top of their league for a long time start to lose luster with the local fans. They get spoiled and stop going so much. It has happened around here with the Patriots the last couple of years. A Pats ticket used to be a must go but now folks are like, "Nah, I'll just watch it at home."

Well, here's hoping that over the next 5 years the Canucks take home some hardware so I can get some cheaper season tickets.

+1 Totally agree with this list. Although remember '94 when the Rangers won the cup they owned the city. And thank you for leaving the devils off this list.

Pirates

The pirates may be the worst attended professional team in the country and for good reason. 17+ straight losing seasons will do that to a fan base.

They couldn't sell out Three Rivers for the NLCS against the Braves, losing just makes the apathy worse.

Sooo you wern't alive 3 years ago? lol The Rangers will sell tickets for the exact same reason the Knicks will sell tickets. They're in NYC. It won't even matter if they play poor or not.

It suprises me the Rangers can still sell tickets. I don't think I have been alive with them in the playoffs
