HST or Harmonized Sales Tax.........

Recommended Posts

haha. Well, it combines our GST and PST, which is federal and provincial sales taxes, into one. Some items to not have one tax or the other applied to them (gas, groceries, etc) so by combining the taxes into one, some things will cost more, due to the other tax being applied when there was only one tax in the first place.

goods and services tax is federal, and it works like a value added tax (a tax on estimated market value added to a product at each stage of its journey to the consumer). provincial sales tax applies to everything at the consumer level with the exception of: non processed food, childrend's clothes/footwear, restaurant and fuel. the big difference is that gst is charged no matter what stage the product is being purchased at, whereas PST is charged only to the end user (example: your LHS only pays GST on the products they sell, you pay both gst & pst (again, with exceptions).

HST won't affect the current cost of most product, because we already pay GST & PST on them, HST just harmonizes the two together, so now EVERYTHING AT EVERY LEVEL (with a few exceptions) is charged the same. so food, restaurants, gym memberships, etc will appear to have gone up in price. the benefit to HST is that had special levies will be reduced to the HST, or not taxed at all, like children's clothing/footwear, hygiene products, child car seats, diapers, fuel (BC only), newspapers and fast food items under $4 (Ontario only).

so to answer your question, no, you will not be paying more for your totalones

^^Hence the price of gear(or anything else for that matter) cost more in Canada. Free healthcare is awesome!

I know they added a $1 to the price of drop-in shinny to my local rink

Wow, they better not do that at my rink. They would be increasing the price by 50% (Current price is $2.00)

Didn't they sneak in a little raise in the tax, e.g, the old GST and PST totaled 13%, but the new HST is 14%, or something to that effect.

Taxes suck. Free healthcare is not free, $21 for a six pack of beer, 14% HST, ... just a way to disguise it as free but you are really paying for it, big time.

No one said it was free, just "socialized". We don't tend to have road tolls either. All built into the taxes when you buy gas, tires etc. A little bit at a time is worth it IMO. No one here gets ruined financially by getting sick. Let the Us vs them debate begin.

Yet another topic gone off the rails and headed down hill on the first page. This is getting really old.
