MLX Skates Now Available

Recommended Posts

Put in the Easton footbeds today, and it helped a lot. More of a soreness then a pain compared to yesterday. I started to develop some lace bite on my left foot, and didn't figure out that I hadn't forgotten to take off the 3mm lifts I had under my Easton footbeds until after my games. So, for starters, oops. Two, definitely going to try some different footbeds with these skates. The MLX ones have a very low to high arch, and I'm more of a mid arch guy. Other than that, I've got zero issues. Broken nicely everywhere else. Just the arches that are going to need a little bit of tweaking.

Wanna meet me somewhere for these? I don't think I'll be on skates for a week or two.

Mine went to Memphis also. And arrived at the dest sort facility at 10:40 am, but says nothing about being on a truck for delivery.

Finally got mine today after waiting 1.5 months :(

Initial impressions are that they are really heavy compared to my Total One's. Does anyone know the exact weight of these things?

My 2nd concern is that the boot itself is not very deep so what is happening is that the top of my foot is bulging out of the laces. I haven't heated them up yet but will tonight so hopefully that stretches them out or something. As of now, it looks like I may have to return them :(

Naw, the Eastons have helped a lot. Reheated them tonight, and they felt fine. Skating tonight and we'll see what happens.

It will help. When I first got mine, I could only lace the first 3 or 4 eyelets because my foot was pushing the tongue out so much. Bake them and you should be fine.

Sorry bud, but baking a skate does not increase volume.

I never said it did pal. I said that it would help, because I had the same problem with them fresh out of the box. The tongues are heat moldable as well, and they collapse down when you heat the skates and lace them up. There was no way I was lacing them up past the 5th eyelet before heating the boots, but after heating I had no problem fitting my foot in and lacing them up.

Why did you get these if you already have Total Ones?

Well I heated up the skates tonight and I got to say they are pretty amazing aside from the depth issue. My feet feel completely locked in, especially the heel which I have never experienced, even with the Total Ones. I failed the pencil test by quite a bit between the 4th and 8th eyelet...Not sure if MLX can make a deeper boot for me but I will ask. Here's what it looks like...Doable? http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/5013/photopl.jpg

I'm really happy with the Total ones but everyone was raving about these skates and for 400$..why not try them?

Your foot bulging out of the skate too much. You will have issues. Return them if you can or see if they will do customs.

Because you already have $800+ skates that are less than a year old? lol.

I got my skates today. Out of the box, they were tight in the forefoot and had pretty good volume for my foot. After baking, the skate fits nice and snug throughout the foot without having to tighten the laces that much. I will post an update after I skate in them.

I guess they'll be too shallow for you as well then.

I got the Total Ones for 450$ through a friend who works at a sports store. Sick employee discount...goes to show how much Bauer is gouging us on skates.

As you can see, it's a pretty bad fit all around. Positives from the experience; the boot is extremely pliable when baking; I will definitely give it that.

I'll attempt to skate in them in the AM, but most likely not going to work for me in its current iteration. If anyone can wear a sz 11, please PM me.

I do appreciate MLX sending me a pair. I do know that they did not have 11s from the beginning but I really wanted to get a LTR going with other members in common sizes.

Woo hoo got a set of Sz 11's Fedex'd in (premium service) today. Where do I start?

1. Weight - I would classify them as "not heavy" at 1030g's, but they are just a bit heavier than my design.

If you recall I rough estimated they would come in at 1100g's based on the Sz8's

So yeah not concerned about the weight, with a full blade and the features they have this is a good number. Lots of protection in this skate too.

2. Design and Construction. Looks like quite a bit of thinking that has gone into pulling off this design (Much more complex & involved than the design I have been using) I've never seen a Kor skate or a speed skate. But I guess they have pulled methods from these designs. That interface the composite and the upper material looks tricky. Various adhesive layers. Didn't Easton build a skate similar to this too?? To do what they are doing at this price is well.... I hope it covers the costs!

3. Fit: Seems to fit real nice just out of the box - for me. Most skates tend to be too pulled in when I lace them up. So there is less material there as we see above. The way my foot stands in the skate is solid too. Perfect fit size wise. It does have that higher arch pressure (unmolded) but I feel this adds stability to my foot on the blade. The blade alignment feels great too. This skate feels most like my design of any I've tried. Is the fit better? No, because it's a conventional format (floor, sides, tongue) the boot cannot give me a full 360 degree molded fit.

More later ...

Their insole is pretty nice as far as comfort is concerned. Unfortunately the insole they sent me was about 1/4" too short for the boot so my toes were over the edge. I just threw in a new pair of superfeets and fitted them with those in there and they still feel great. MLX offered to send me another pair of larger insoles but Im used to superfeets so Ill probly just keep them as backups or for my outdoor skates. The MLX skates are by far the easiest break-in skates I have ever had, no bullshit.

Im actually worried about the volume now, everyone seems to be busting out of theirs. Not sure how the pencil tests are going? Insoles will play a part also.

Quick update on mine. Played a full game on mine finally, as opposed to officiating. Heated them earlier in the day with the Easton footbeds. They were absolutely perfect. No arch pain, no lace bite (removed the 3mm lifts). No issues what so ever.

Bantam AAA tourney next week. Gonna be doing a lot of skating on these skates while lining and reffing, I'll update after the tournament is over.

You sure about this?

Yeah I'm fairly sure. From your pictures it looks like you were more or less in the same boat as me, with not being able to lace them before heating. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you like the skates) you might need a deeper skate. I didn't, so it wasn't an issue for me.

For what it's worth, here is a picture of mine laced up. Click the link. I'm certainly not coming out of the skate as much as you, but I don't have any problems at all with mine. No lace bite or anything of that sort. Maybe it won't be a big issue for you. Good luck with them.

Looks like people are accepting a bad fit, because yours don't.

Then again, I've been fitting custom skates for over 10 years.

Anyway, I'll try to skate on them today just for S&Gs but we'll see if we can find these a home.

They are just very shallow skates; any semblance of an arch or a thicker foot and they just aren't for you. It is a very similar fit to a Reebok.

Let me ask you this then, since you've been fitting them for 10 years, because I'm not sure of the answer. If I'm having absolutely no problems with the skates; no foot pain, no lace bite, etc, etc, what would I gain if the boot was deeper? Would there be a performance benefit, or would I just have the satisfaction of knowing they're a "good fit"? If these are technically a "bad fit" because of the volume, I'm accepting it because they feel so good on my feet, they're like slippers. My One75's most likely weren't deep enough for me either, but I loved those skates.
