Beer league assault...

Recommended Posts

is it bad the first thing I noticed is everyone on the team is wearing teal jerseys and one guy wearing white . I then thought I bet the kid in the white is a ringer* the team brought and he is the idiot that causes problems.

what the hell is it with these type of incidents lately? Granted I have been able to play with the same group of light hearted, level headed guys for a while, but Jesus, this is a horrible trend lately!

These things have always happened in beer leagues. You're just more likely to see them thanks to technology that makes it easier to record video anywhere.

It's probably a good thing the stick broke (released kinetic energy from the stick). If the stick were to stay intact, all of the energy from the hack would be transferred to the guy's melon.

Good thing it wasn't one of those old Koho Silverfibres or a Canadien 8001.

Edited for spelling.

I'm pretty sure anyone who has been playing for any sort of time has witnessed sucker punches, late/dangerous hits, and all around dirty play first hand. Like others have said the fact that everyone has a camera that they can whip out in seconds just makes it so more incidents see the light of day. If it weren't for cameras it would just be another "hockey story".

I'm sure most people have witnessed first hand something that is on the level of this video or worse.

When I was in youth hockey I saw a teammate two hand a kid to the neck. I guess with this, the Texas HS Brawl, and just flagrant hits by a variety of NHL'ers, it is disturbing to me how little respect there is for the person, that's all.

We had someone break a stick slashing one of our players three times last season. Fortunately, none were broken over the head.

Worst one I've seen in person wasn't an impact with another player. A guy in the B league I was playing in got ejected from the game for yapping at the refs, then threw his stick so high in the air it hit a speaker that was mounted to a ceiling joist. The speaker broke free from it's mount and fell behind the visitor bench. Guy was a complete lunatic. Very amusing tho.

I've seen this before in youth hockey... bantam age (14/15 year olds)... teammate of mine two handed a guy over the head just like that and broke his wood stick in half. It was behind the play and the refs completely missed it. The parents and coaches for the other team were irate. Our coach sent him off the ice and suspended him for the next game, but since this was 15 years ago (before cell phone cams) it didn't go beyond that.

I've seen a kid hurl his stick in frustration at the boards, only for it to go OVER the boards into the opposing teams bench. Good thing it didn't decapitate anyone. Coach took the stick and stomped it in half.

I was that kid. Lesson learned.

I actually caught this video again last night on the Channel 5 evening news.

Down here, the Kings and Ducks scores are barely mentioned as an afterthought to highlights and commentary for the Angels, Doyers, Lakers, Clippers, Galaxy and Chivas USA.

Just another incident where hockey makes headlines for all the wrong reasons.

at least that was kind of an accident though. I was scorekeeping a beer league game one time and the refs tossed this guy, for what I don't remember. a few minutes later there was a faceoff deep in the zone farthest from the locker room side of the rink. the ejected player comes out of the locker room and - swear to god - throws a puck at the ref on the blue line then runs into the locker room like a little child. the ref turned around and, of course saw him so he took off to try to catch him but he couldn't get the door open by the time the other ref skated over and tackled him. needless to say we kicked that player out for life. :)

I don't understand what is going through a person's head when they do stuff like that during a hockey game. I don't think I've ever been mad enough at any point in my life where I would swing a stick at someone's head as hard as I can. Let alone being on a hockey rink, which is one place where people should be able to relax and have a really good time. Don't get it.

The only things that get my blood boiling are slew foots, and people who stick legs out when they get beat. People who check in non-checking leagues are high on the list too, but typically that causes no injury and it usually gets called.

Nothing would cause me to hit someone in the head with a stick, or even above the waist. I have seen people do crazy stuff though for petty stuff. The human brain is an interesting thing.

I was playing a league game in Coney Island (Brooklyn, NY). The league had lost control and every game there were fights.

I saw a guy two hand another guy, similar to that chop, and open him up on his forehead. The rink manager had seen enough. He called the NYPD. Problem was, with these guys, you couldn't send two cops into the locker room and hope to come out with the perpetrator. Next thing you know 2 vans pull up, twenty officers walk into the locker room and walk out with the guy in cuffs. Things got better (slightly) after that but my team still left that league.

Anybody else notice that the skaters in that video were weak skaters? I often find the higher you go up the ladder in terms of skill, the less bullshit goes on.

Better players tend to be a little more preoccupied with the skill of the game.

But, there are exceptions everywhere.
