Elbow Pads really necessary?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if you guys wear elbow pads all the time? For some reason I Can't get them to fit on when I wear my Sherwood Shoulder Pads. Is it really necessary to wear them during a game? I was just wondering this since I usually play with out them.

No offense, but take it from a fellow 300 pounder. Yes it F'in hurts to put 300+ pounds down on your elbow! Even with pads on, they hurt!

Yes. Roller, Ice, Pick-up and/or league.

I've got multiple bone chips floating around in both elbows from not using elbow pads for years. At times, leaning on them right is actually painful. I don't go without them, now.

Definitely! I got checked a couple of months ago and got a 3/4 inch cut on my elbow that needed to be stitched. This was through my elbow pads.

Next time you're on the ice, get down on your knees, lean over and hit the ice as hard as you can with your elbow. Now imagine doing that with about ten times the force. This little drill will answer your question.

use your elbow pads in every game! even though its non-checking game, u have to wear it. hockey is a rough game, and sometimes u fall on our elbow, blocked a shot with it, and physical contact in battling through the boards.

Elbow pads should be mandatory for sure. If you are still unsure if you need them go ahead and try and play a game without them. I'm sure it will feel lovely falling, or hitting the boards with the bare elbow.

Thanks for the input guys. I know the last few games I played I went out there without elbow pads not really thinking. So I will get them to work somehow.

i also thought i was invincible without elbow pads until about the 3rd or 4th time i hit my elbows hard on the ground. it didn't happen often, but when it did happen it hurt like a b. might as well prevent the pain while u can

im i the only one who doesn't wear elbows for mens league? It's c/b, so quite a broad range of talent. If i fall i dont fall on my elbows... I also don't wear shoulders. For the last 2-3 years I haven't worn either and haven't regretted it yet.

Not telling you to skip shoulder pads, but I would lose shoulder pads before I left off my elbow pads.

Well in the 2.5 years of playing hockey, I have yet to fall and crash my head on the ice but I still wear my helmet, better safe than sorry!

Why buy it in the first place? Dunno why some would go without shin pads even for shinny.

whats worse is when they get mad AT YOU for hitting them in the leg with a stick or a puck

Well I didn't buy them. Got them free off of Craigslist. :D

That may be why they're not working for you. I suspect either your elbows or shoulders don't fit properly if they won't work together. You may want to buy either new shoulders or elbow pads that fit perfectly if that's in your budget. You should be able to wear both without any issues. Go to a good LHS and try on different combinations of shoulders, elbows and gloves to see what fits you properly while limiting gaps in protection and still giving you a good range of motion. Bring your old gloves, elbows and shoulders to try those with some of the new equipment. You can then figure out the best combination for you and buy a new piece or two if you determine something isn't fitting properly.

Ideally you'd wear both shoulders and elbows pads, but I agree with others when they say that elbow pads are more important than shoulder pads in non-contact league if upgrading isn't currently in the budget and you have to prioritize. The only time I play without elbow pads is for hockey on outdoor rinks when no one else is wearing them either and it's not league play - I probably should there too. In league play (even if it's only beer league) I'd never go without them - you never know when you'd going to get tripped or slew footed and end up on your elbow. You could go years without it happening, but the time it does could lead to a serious injury that could've been prevented.
