Derek Boogaard found dead

Recommended Posts

No need to speculate at this point until toxicology results. In any case, it is painful to see such a young person at an elite level pass away. Condolences to his family.

Post concussion syndrome can be a horrific experience. Kudos to the family for donating his brain for research.

because the media likes to jump to conclusions instead of waiting for the autopsy.

they are either going to try to blame it on substance abuse or else concussions/brain damage sustained from all that fighting.

It'll be a combo of both, concussions lead to headaches/sleeplessness which leads to pills which leads to dependance. When I heard about it on Saturday I said that's a guaranteed painkiller/muscle relaxer OD. First pro wrestling style death I can remember in hockey. If it turns out to be something else I apologize but it's starting to all come together.

Why does Brooks feel the need to tweet that? It's barely news, and only serves to fuel speculation.

That's why I try to ignore all media (especially Brooks). I'll just wait until there are official facts.

Exactly. Brooks is a tool.

Social media has changed journalism (for the worse in this case); now there is a race to get the scoop against not just other journalists, but against anybody on the internet.

Brooks has to protect his reputation of being an insider / expert.

Yeah, if you read the likes of Eklund. There are plenty of great journalists using twitter such as TSNBobMcKenzie.

I'm a firefighter/paramedic in a state where Rx abuse is an epidemic and somewhere around 14 people a DAY die as a result. I have personally worked on a lot of people who have passed away this way, including more than a few deaths of young men and women who were not even old enough to drink. I have seen even more that were saved by the timely arrival of a family member and EMS intervention.

Don't forget his shoulder injury as well. My gut instict agrees with you. I hate to speculate or make assumptions and hope I'm wrong. For all that is wrong with modern media, they have been restrained as far as speculating about drugs or head trauma as the possible cause of death. I'm not saying they aren't chomping at the bit waiting on the autopsy and toxicology reports.

The change actually started with the internet where news sources were racing to be the first to post the "Breaking News" on their sites. The news became a world of headline first, facts second. That problem has simply compounded with the likes of twitter.

The explosion of hobbyist bloggers and and attention whores on twitter has caused the real media to change in many ways, very few of them being good.

You got that right. Traditional media would ensure that they had the facts and both sides before publishing. Now people don't care about that-they just want the latest information so they can be in the loop whether it is true or not. The story can always be updated within seconds should the facts change and everyone forgets the earlier version. It is almost like watching a news story develop before your eyes except it used to be that no one saw all the unsubstantiated bs and rumours in the final legit media version.

im not sure that's entirely true, maybe bloggers have made it more competitive and more of a race to break the news first - but there were already plenty of traditional news outlets that have gotten egg on their face for announcing something before they bothered to check the facts. it's been slowly getting worse for like the past 10 years and so has the propaganda.

LOL :)

I agree with both points, even though you pretty much said the same thing. I remember during my mass comm classes in the mid 90s when they kept on talking about this thing called the internet and we were all scared that there wouldn't be any print jobs in 15 years.

Whether it is print, broadcast or the internet...it is lazy to not confirm a story before making it known. It has always happened...and it always will happen. Doesn't make it right.

And, for the record...I am also a member of the media fraternity. LOL

LOL...JR...I remember in College (1996-1997) thinking I'd never 1. be able to afford or 2. NEED to have the "internet" at home because I could always just use it at school/work.

Which in 2008 was replaced with the thought "I don't need to have the internet on my cell phone, as I can always just use it at home and work".

I hate to say it, but taking something as strong as oxycodone, bringing alcohol into the picture you're just asking for trouble.
