Gear Stench - Which piece the most?

Recommended Posts

I've seen a new product that does uv light on a similarly shaped stand. I'm seriously considering one for my shoes as well as my skates

That would be an upgrade for sure. Do you have a link, Chadd? Thanks. Bob

Chadd, was being lazy, found a couple by googling.

I hang my gear on a clothing rack right after every game, with a fan on it, nothing ever smells much at all except my gloves. My gloves always stink, but it's a weird smell, sort of like popcorn.

Jersey by far.

It's the first thing off me and into the bag, at the very bottom.... where it doesn't get any air circulation, even after I open my bag when I get home. I have a few I haven't washed in years and they all smell like a decomposing body.

Bunch of greasy/gross mofos up in here. I sweat like a fiend and my gear rarely smells.

The little effort it takes to dry/hang your gear goes a long way.

Gloves are deffinatly the worst, but the shinpads aren't to far behind! Surprisingly my skates don't actually smell that bad!

gloves. the smell on my hands lingers almost the entire day after a shower and even multiple hand washes

Agreed. My old one90's got chucked yesterday based strictly on crusty palms and smell. Couldn't even donate them to a second hand gear store because I would have felt bad giving them to another person.

My gear stays in the bag for a good 6 hours since I dont go straight home. Stay at the bar and coach after my game. Once I do get home, it gets aired out. Somethings will get smelly no matter what.

My gloves are the worse of all my gear. I think a big part of it is not being able to get anti-microbial febreeze deep in the fingers, and then not having a good solution to get air flow through. I made a hockey tree out of broken wood sticks, and I was thinking about using some PC fans with a DC converter (I have extras sitting around) and attach them below where the gloves sit. Currently, I just place them in front of a fan for a couple of hours.

Roller skates that I use outside also get a bit of a smell, but half of it seems to be related to the dirt that gets all over the skates. After I clean that off, they smell just like any other piece of gear.

Either gloves or skates. Though often I find it isn't the skates themselves but my laces that end up reeking. Normally I just throw the fan on them over night or whatever

Elbows for sure, gloves come in second.

Amazingly my skates dont smell, but I am anal about wearing fresh socks each time I skate. I wont even wear the pair that I drove to the rink in.

My sneakers on the other hand give my goalie's catcher a run for its money in the stink stakes.

Weird how its different for everyone.....

I air my stuff out after every game & practice, over time though my shins become majorly feral, my gloves also smell, not really bad but definitely a distinctive - more in a funky way i guess

dont have a problem ever with shorts, elbows, shoulders, probably as I wear a compression / wicking shirt and jock under em which im sure helps a lot in this department. Never had a prob with helmet or skates either - i use fresh thin skiing socks every time which id say help too

I wash my shin guards, elbow pads and shoulder pads in the dishwasher. It works wonders...just don't do it when your wife is around.

Have your dinner guests every made funny faces while eating? ;)

A little curious, is it the gear that has direct contact with skin that usually smells the worse? From my last back to back games, I mainly noticed the smell from my gloves and elbows, which are the main pieces that have direct contact with the skin. Everything else has some sort of layer between.

From my experience definitely yes, i dont know why but yeah the shins are the only ones in direct contact, remainder arent due to long sleeve comp shirt / jocks which clearly helps so for eg my elbows have never been a prob. gloves are a special case i spose - for all hockey players! fortunately shin liners can and are cleaned periodically as they do get quite yuk

Lately I've been rubbing shaving cream into the palms of my gloves before they get completely dry. seems to keep the palms soft
