Best Cage for Visability

Recommended Posts

If you can still find it the Itech Fantom(sp) is a tremendous cage for visibility. Since bauer bought them I think it was discontinued though.

9900 comes in 4 sizes, xs, s, m, l.

I just got a small for my new CCM pro stock V08 and it makes the helmet fit SO much better.

You are correct. I must have the medium then.

Another vote for the Bauer RBE VIII Oreo... I used a white Jofa (4 or 5 years old) until this year because it was dented up so good. The RBE white/black really does help more than you would think.

I found this video online where a Boston bruins player painted the inside of his cage white. He had a broken nose and said it helps with visibility.

I noticed a huge difference coming from a standard black bar'd cage to my current 9900. The visibility difference is very noticeable.

I just noticed in the WinterFest thread that they talked about the new Bauer Titanium Cage coming out that uses the same wire design as the 9900. Might be worth waiting for that. My 8500 cage from Bauer is amazing though, the lure of the lighter titanium is the only thing that would have me consider switching (not that the 8500 is heavy by any means)

This post is perfectly timed as I'm gearing up to start playing beer league after 16 years off the ice. Just ordered a 9900, I'm sure it's better than my old CCM white birdcage (early 90's vintage). Appreciate the post and all the feedback!

Is that Paille? He had a nice cheapshot on Malkin the other night, leading with that facecage.

Another fan of the Bauer 9900. Went to it after having used the Itech Fantom (was still a good cage) and having used a solid black cage in the past as well as the old Itech clear visor/mask. Right now I would say its been my favorite other than using nothing at all or a visor. Unfortunately I've spent my time and money on an ER visit late at night and don't feel the added visiblity with a visor is worth the risk of more injuries and money spent on them. The 9900 is already a pretty light cage so it would be pretty interesting to see a titanium version of it.

There are definitely older threads on this - besides the 480 people mention the Bauer 9900 cage (lighter than standard steel and the bars are flat so it's easier to see through) and the Itech Titanium cage (lightest cage every manufactured). Someone that used both the 9900 and Titanium suggested that the Titanium was lighter, but the visability was slightly better with the 9900 and the flat bars. The Titanium cage could be hard to track down at this point since it's been out of production for a while. The Bauer 9900 should be easy to find.

Personally, I use a Titanium cage and I can tell you that it's very light, doesn't rust at all and the visability is better than any other cage I used in the past, but I haven't used the 9900. Both the 9900 and Itech titanium have a flast silver finish that isn't reflective.

I had the iTech Titanium until it was dented by a slapper (long story) and now I use the 9900. No difference in visibility. ITech was lighter but you can't really feel the difference. I liked the look of the Bauer more.

cat eye player cage. you've got to be at least 45 to wear one and pull it off

I wore something very similar my Sr. year in high school. The only cage I've ever worn (except the couple of games I tried this season). Yes I'm over 45.

Last night one of the guys I was playing against took a puck to the nose. It cracked so loudly I thought the puck hit his helmet. Broken nose, a cut that will take about 6 stitches.

I'm seriously considering one of these DR cages.

I've been using an old Itech RBE1 half-shield for years and decided to switch to a cage now that I'm starting back up in a rec league. After looking at the 9900 and 480, I actually ended up with the 11K in chrome and really like it so far. I find the visibility when glancing down to be a bit better for me with the 11K than the 9900 and otherwise both kind of were of minimal difference.

I miss the half-shield but it didn't take me long to simply adjust to seeing past it. Weight of the 11K isn't a problem for me either and the chin cup is really comfortable and the easy adjust cage straps are nice as I'm still finding the right adjustment so it doesn't put too much pressure on my jaw forcing an underbite.

I just posted this on another thread but thought I would add it here too. Found this at a Play it Again sports for $30. Wish i would have had this my whole life. Visibility is great. And if you look good you play good!

I've been wearing a chrome 480 cage for a couple years now and I usually switch out to a bubble when it finally gets cold/dry enough in the rinks not to fog it up so badly. But after following this thread for a while, I decided to take a look at the Bauer I2 and 9900 cages. I was skeptical, to be honest, but the vision difference with the 9900 is truly impressive. The black/white paintjob on the I2 was neat, but the bars just seemed huge by comparison to the 9900. I skated with the 9900 for the first time last night, and even though I was thinking about and evaluating the cage, it just disappeared. Definitely better vision than the 480 and sharp looking too. A perfect fit on my Cascade helmet too, by the way. Never would have changed if it wasn't for this thread... love me some ModSquad!

Best visibility you'll ever find -- the Melanson (now Thomas) 'cheater' cage:

Dude, someone's going to lose an eye if they use that guy! lol

Anyhow seeing as the 99/9500 seems to be the most popular, a quick question for you guys: Did any of you try the 7500/5100 cages? Are those guys more distracting than the 99/9500?

I tried the RBE VIII "Oreo" on my CCM V10. Liked the look from both the inside and outside, but it was WAYYYY too big. Size L helmet, size L mask. It was like there was too many rows of bars. Looking down made the cage hit my chest. Undecided if I want to try a medium, or just stick to the stock CCM V10 cage...

ccm/jofa 480 all the way

i had it on my v10 helmet and now my 4500 bauer. i can see everything and i dont look like a plug.

i couldn't tell you anything about how comfortable the chin cab is cuz i got durty hang son.

there's a kid on the swedish IIHF junior team that has a jofa 480 in chrome on his reebok helmet with some nice hang. looks pretty swag.

my girlfriend chirped him, but she dont know anything. her gear is as old as the hills and held together by hockey tape

oh and for the record, a friend of mine has an old white cage and its allll rusty in the joints of every square. looks dust

Pardon my old age... but could you clarify these:

"a plug"

"durty hang"

"pretty swag"

"looks dust"

Much appreciated.
