My Other Car Is A DeLorean

Just saw Darren McCarty on that Pawn Shop show

Recommended Posts

I just saw that too. I hope things go well for McCarty, I'm a fan. That show seems heavily scripted, part of me hopes there's more to the story than him getting a job at a pawn shop. Nothing wrong with earning a living that way, but seems kind of odd. I guess The Fridge has been a brick-setter since he retired from the Bears...

It seems like a smart move for Mac... if he really has fallen on hard econmic times and needed to find a 9 to 5, why not take one that allowed him to remain in the entertainment industry part of the time. I will say, he didn't look that good to me... hope he's not revisiting any of his old demons.

He was decent whenever they would use him on NHL Network.

He occasionally co-hosts on 97.1FM in Detroit, and will also do color on the Red Wings radio broadcast when Paul Woods has to miss a game.

When I got out of class this morning and was driving to work, McCarty was doing an interview about being an employee. I didn't catch all of the interview, but he seemed to be enjoying himself there.

hopefully mccarty punches that fat broad in the face and the old man and his son. those people are complete scum and the show is completely fake

Better than Pawn Stars that show is trash, feel like I am watching antiques road show... you don't tell people what there stuff is worth and then try to barter with them.

The focus of pawn stars is the history behind the items... that's why I watch it. Hardcore Pawn on the other hand is just another "reality" show about human drama... which is why I don't normally watch it.

thats the thing: the RETAIL value is "x", the wholesale value is "y"... the business needs to make every piece profitable in order to pay for the infrastructure. if you want to sell it to a retailer, you're going to get the wholesale price... if you want to get the retail price, you're going to have to go out and find potential customers to look at it. most people who walk into a pawn shop to sell goods need the money yesterday, so wholesale is their only option.

i had some native american hand woven baskets that i found in fresno california about 12 years ago. i had multiple art dealers (some of whom i knew personally) try to buy them off me for wholesale prices, until eventually i hooked up with a world renowned auction house who offered to connect me to retail buyers (collectors) and those baskets sold for 3-4 times what the art dealer offered. did i take those "lowball" offers personally? no, it didnt offend me. he is taking on the risk by paying me in cash for them while he waits for a buyer... the auction house charges a small finders fee and hooks me up with qualified collectors, photographers, etc. if i remember correctly, i paid the auction house less than 10% of the total and the presentation they put on was incredible.

it's all about the state of your situation. pawn stars usually works on a 50 point margin. they will offer the seller half of what the piece is worth to the collector/consumer. thats pretty much how the retail world works, with some variance in retail margin depending on the industry.

My point isn't that he is ripping people off, my point is if I ran a pawn store I wouldn't tell someone what there stuff is worth. He could get it off them for much cheaper if he just walked over to his computer and did a little research, or had one of his guys look at it in private.

#1. I listened to an NPR interview with Rick (owner) a few months ago, he's a firm believer in karma. They do plenty of research to make sure that what they offer allows them enough margin for profit and overhead. It's also a business practice that works for them, as they then have a customer for life rather than someone who feels ripped off.

#2. You recognize that the valuation process where they bring in an expert and discuss the history of the item and its value is THE major aspect of the show. Without that, there is no show... and I guarantee they make much more money thanks to the show than any money "lost" by letting people know the value of the items.

I guess ethics is not a work in your vocabulary?

Sorry I'm just in the real world, no Pawn shop operates this way.

No pawn shop makes millions by having tv cameras filiming their operations. The show is about the items brought in (their history/obscurity/value)... the pawn shop is simply a vehicle to present them. I'm sure they handle off-camera transactions in a more traditional pawn shop manner.

lol. play it again sports once offered me 8 bucks for a one year old pair of mission roller blades in excellent condition with brand new wheels and bearings that were worth 30 at least alone. I never go there unless i want to turn junk gear into a roll of tape or two, 25 percent for items in good condition? give me a F'n break.

i coached with a former red wing and he said that mac is not doing to well. in not so many words he said that mac has fallen off the wagon. when i met him he looked good, but that was just after training camp in 2010

Can you blame him having to deal with the knuckleheads on that show? And by that I mean everyone associated with it.
