Zootsuit

Switching from PM9 to P88.

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of trying something with a deeper mid curve compared to my PM9.I'm intrigued by the P88.Different Lie,,5 vs 5.5. I noticed a quite a bit more rocker on the 88 compared to the PM9.

I thinking I shorten the length of the stick just a little. I'm OK with that..thoughts /Guesses on how much?

Zootsuit - I made the change (3 months ago) from a Forsberg (PM9) to a P88. I started with the P88 cut at the same length as my Forsberg. Eventually ended up cutting it twice, and now the P88 is about 1 1/4 inches shorter than my Forsberg sticks...

Ironic enough, i just made this change (P88 - PM9 - P88 again) In college -- i was relied on pretty heavily to carry the puck, setup plays, score, and al lthat good stuff so i had used the P88 and loved it.

Post college, i'm playing on a much better team, where my primary job is to move the puck -- good/solid/crisp outlet passes and passes in general so i went to the PM9 as it's a bit straighter than the P88. I noticed that my shooting and carrying of the puck wasn't as great with a PM9.

Both the P88 and and PM9 are a Lie 5 aren't they? The sticks them selves say 5, but the DB here says the P88 is a 5.5-- regardless, the P88 plays a little more stand up ish (probably because of the rocker as you mention).

Overall, i'd go with the P88 from here on out.

i've made the switch to and from pm9 to p88 several times.  i came to the conclusion that for some reason i like pm9 for ice hockey and p88 for inline.  i like my p88 about 1/2" shorter than pm9.  the p88 does have higher lie but more rocker and it it has a more square toe.  note that warriors version of the p88 (i think its zetterburg which is confusing since easton zetterburg used to be a pm9/modano clone) is listed as a lie 4 (same as their pm9 equivalent, the savard/federov) so perhaps it has a lower lie than bauer p88.

forgot to mention...i don't even cut my shafts when i switch from pm9 to p88 blades. i use full width of the tape for my end knob for p88 and if i switch to pm9, i just retape the knob but with half the tape width. it effectively changes the shaft length without actually having to make a cut.

So I skated tonight with the new stick. Picture is the tape wear after a good amount of a wide variety of shots. Because of the rocker I'm not positive about stick height.

Opinions of wear/apparent stick height?????

Could shorten the stick a bit, not much.

Agreed, half an inch to an inch should do it.

That picture of the tape is where my P88 was wearing down a lot as well. I shortened the stick up just a bit and that centered it better. I noticed that my stick handling got more consistant and shots became more accurate.

Btw...I LOVE the P88 curve. For me it's the perfect middle as I'm not a huge fan of a real open face, but like some to get some loft. Really allows me to lay into a shot without having to worry about the puck being sent into the rafters.

Should tape wear be in the middle? Mine is ALWAYS on the heel...

It depends on why the tape is worn at the heel. If you're skating around with one hand on the stick and the blade on the ice, it should wear at the heel. If you're taking shots and playing the puck, it should be more to the middle.

A bit OT, but I'm about to go from a P92 (been using strictly P92 for a few yrs) to PM9... My fav XXX-lite P92 broke and I'm about to receive a One95 PM9 anyday... what can I expect?

You will have to work harder to lift the puck and the smaller rocker on the bottom of the blade makes puck placement a little less forgiving. It's harder to handle the puck in your feet.

It should be centered for sure. Don't you say that you have difficulty taking a slapshot? That may be a factor why.

Yes, but that's more likely just because I don't know how ;)

The flatness of the pm9 vs the p92 will also make stick handling different. You may find the puck sliding off the end of your blade when you first get started.
