He takes the skate off the holder, hones it, puts the oil on, and then puts the skate back on the holder for a final pass? Does anyone else do that?

Yep. It's a M-E method.

I used to do it way back, and it works, however, if you don't clamp it the same way and all that, it may not work.

In a nutshell, you're better served to honing the skate while clamped before your final pass. The effect is the same, a deburred blade before a final.

Oh, those poor tips! :mellow::facepalm:

I see. Yeah, I do it the way you mention here, hone while clamped, run a rag down it, oil, finish pass. There always is the chance that the skate won't clamp in the same spot it was before.

Right.

But yeah, to have that little heel and toe left on a skate that's sharpened every two weeks...watching those passes, that's not by design. You can still sharpen those areas if desired without ending up at the end of the wheel...

Actually Bob says to leave the skate in the holder for just the reason you said JR and he has a mid stone for honing in the holder. I don't really want to say much because I do not work in the NHL but I would not sharpen using that method as you say JR the poor toe and heel!

Gotta say though i do love that room and all the toys in there! Now that is a dream shop!

as I thought 5/8 seems to be the most popular hollow. With consistent and frequent sharpening available there's really no need to be any deeper than that.

but what I don't understand is how can goalies use 3/8?!

Because the position has evolved. Goalies do not slide laterally on their blades anymore. They drop down and control their movement by pushing off the opposite leg's edge. Can't do that with 1".

If they let them use Overdrives you would see it go back to the "1 hollow they only need the bite to slide across. Any high end goalies that tried overdrives I spoke to loved them and would rather them then really sharp skates.

Used overdrives on my Grafs in college. Used to paint them white before every game. No one ever knew.

I'm assuming Overdrives are the blade parralel to the sole of the boot to dig and push with?

Classic reporter move, assuming everything and anything is superstition. (You see a giant bucket of old steel, and still assume they can get superstitious about it? Really?)

Just like how anthropologists first assume literally everything has religious significance.

He alluded to something about it in the video but I'd be curious to see if they got Neal on a shallower hollow, he was on 3/8 in Dallas; 8/10 combo radius if I'm not mistaken

I have yet to see any guys using a 3/8ths that I have worked with. They are all 5/8ths or less. And in Dallas with softer ice I just cant see it happening? I could be wrong but would seem very odd to be that deep of a hollow on ice that was typically softer similar to Tampa.

(and yes I realize the Pittsburg guy is using deeper hollows however ............)
