The softest skates for the best skaters ?

Recommended Posts

Hey fellow modsquaders,

What is the best boot out there for the skater who' takes pride in their skating ? I'm talking bout graceful skating fluid with full ankle movement with no restrictions such as being too stiff. Most boots theese days are crazy stiff and take away from a skaters ability .. They have to skate with their hips meanwhile players of the past wore very soft skates that they could skate amazing graceful .. What's a good skate today that feels like a slipper , is not very stiff and requires using your ankle strength .. I know some of you will mention dauosts from back in the day but those skates are only seen in a dream world today .. Any suggestion ?

Current skates? No brainer: mako skates.

Or you could always buy some figure skates if you don't play hockey

This just sounds like a Mako Skate advertisement, lol.

Not a huge fan of soft skates, just because unless you're an excellent skater you won't get much support in your ankles. Definitely the Mako or a low end skate though, probably like the Reebok White K.

Graf 707 or whatever it's current incarnation is?

good point, 707 or G7 from grafs advertise exactly that

White Ks are not soft. Not the stiffest out there by any means, but definitely not soft.

The Bauer Flexlite is like a slipper. Personally I can't stand skates like that, but its probably right up your alley.

A lower end model skate that isn't stiff

Not really. Ideally, you want stiffness around your foot and below the ankle bone. If the boot is too soft, it won't be as responsive when you stride.

Yes the bauer flexlite is very soft, if you can find those in your size, get those. I've had em for two years but now I'm upgrading to a stiffer skate, cause every shot. Block kills my feet

I think you guys are missing the point. Flexlites are very soft, but extremely high cut so unless you're going two eyelets down you aren't getting any ankle flexion. I'd go Graf, Mako, or ideally if you can find them, some of the old Mission boots.

Skates are for skating. Keep using the skates you have, if they fit and work well for you.

Buy some skate fenders, if you want protection.

You don't want to compromise ankle support. If you want more bend forward with your ankle, try lacing down one eyelet and see how it feels. Also a skate fitted properly should be in essence one with your foot/ankle. I see guys wearing skates way too big for them and they wonder why they can't stride correctly.

Yeah but I'm 15 and play u16 AAA hockey so I'd get made fun of If I wore skate fenders.

lol

Do you seriously care about that? Or protecting your feet?

NHL and pro players wear them. There; it's cool now. Like cage hang, or the 4500 helmet, or toe curves. hehe

I understand caring about looks, but don't let it be a detriment to you. Shot blockers looks better than skate fenders but they are a fair bit more expensive.

Funny you should post this. I've been looking for new skates for my 12 year old son and had planned on asking pretty much the exact same question, although I was thinking more about the newer higher performing skates than softness of the boot. I think the Mako would qualify on both counts. He's been skating on U+12s for 2-3 years and is on his 2nd pair. His edge work/skating abilities and smoothness are pretty impressive. He's gotten to the point in his U+12s where I think the skates are beginning to hold back his development and ability. He is such a strong skater that not only does he leave the top eyelet undone, but he ties them quite loosely as well. Almost to the point where you would think he could almost slide them off without untying them like a pair of high tops, but not quite. I had been leaning heavily toward the Mako and then the VH skate came onto the market.

If that's important enough to you that it influences your behavior regarding your safety, you have more serious problems than your skates.

Yeah, I just gave a lower end model with higher features that compromises.

Most softer skates other than the Mako are dirt cheap. It's all about fit, but skates with bad support and stitching and what not really serve no purpose. I'm so used to my current skates even though they literally have no support and I didn't bake them.

In a couple of years, I imagine the Mako/VH skate development getting to the point you're talking about. I'm looking forward to that.

According to what you discribe as to what you are looking for the Graf G7 or 707 are EXACTLY what you want.

I speak from experience,, these Ski boots called bauer and CCM are a joke,,, there is a reason why they make these skates so stiff and it has nothing to do with them being a good skate it has to do with marketing and sales.
