1-2 degree difference - hnic 2nd intermission Sat 15 Nov 2014

Recommended Posts

I was just getting back to watching Hockey Night in Canada on CityTV last Sat 15 Nov (2nd intermission), and Nick Kypreos was explaining something about a 1-2 degree difference in the snapping back of the modern stick. He then went on about how shooting with a modern stick is like shooting a bow.

Anybody get the gist of the full discussion?

Nick Kypreos was holding two bottom ends of OPSes, and George Strombolopolous was holding one.

The hnic deal was about phil kessel and fused one piece vs true one piece sticks. Apparently easton made the upcoming cx stealth for kessel this past summer. That's what they said during intermission.

OK, I was hoping that they would start talking more about the technical part of hockey equipment on hnic.

Well that would be fine but bring in one of the heads of one of the companies to explain the facts. Not have these guys go off cue cards with partial truths and only talk about one product.

Basically he said Easton is the only one to have made a true one piece stick. And this just happened this summer! Ok anyone else not going with that story? He is a client at our shop so I am not trying to bash him just the people feeding the half truth info. Makes him look bad to people that know what's really going on with equipment these days. I bet they could find a really good on air type person that has hockey knowledge and knows the products from a local Toronto Pro Shop that could do a really good job. And I would agree a segment each week on gear would be neat if it is done properly.

Healey did this last year when he talked about goalie masks and said they should all be certified. He wore a plastic glorified players helmet and has no idea what he is talking about.

Unfortunately a lot of misinformed people watch that show and believe what the broadcasters say is fact, so while I love hearing about hockey equipment I think they should take this aspect out as there will be far too much sponsorship biased and incorrect statements everywhere.

If Easton was actually going to bring a stick to market that was designed around Kessel's shooting technique that would be very interesting. Kessel is able to get significant force behind his shot with minimal to no windup and without a traditional weight transfer. Now that has a lot more to do with talent and practice than stick design I'm sure, but people who have used his pro-stock sticks have said they are very whippy. Perhaps his sticks are unique in other ways as well.

But that wasn't the impression I got from the HNIC episode. Instead I learned that Kypreos doesn't know much about the design of hockey sticks and is easily wowed by a sales pitch by Easton.

Kessel uses something around a 70-75 flex. That and plenty of practice are what make him a deadly shooter. Kessel found a stick that works for him, just like plenty of other snipers around the league.

And you can see how it makes him pretty much garbage on slapshots, especially one-timers. But.. that's not something he does very often.

I've touched the Easton's new Elliptical Tapered stick, "CX Stealth" about 2weeks before.

But unfortunately, I despaired...

Because, it was tooooooo stiffer than former model, V9E.

Easton will begin to accept its custom ordering next year January.

Really I had so much waited for this stick for long time, but I can't choose this stick if its length were not change.

Probably almost people of this board know it is said that 4inchs mean roughly 20flex changing of the stick.

But Easton change the new stick length +5inchs from former model with no flex change, at least for custom ordering.

New model's 65flex mean former 85flex, 85flex mean 105flex.

So I thought 90 or 95flex when I touched the sample stick which has been sent to my near shop (distributor of Easton).

It was not 95flex, but also just 75flex...
