shoot_the_goalie 281 Report post Posted April 10, 2015 Watching the Rangers play Ottawa tonight, and at the end of the game, the NYR did their traditional thing of "taking the shirts off their backs" (giving their game jerseys to fans). Kept a look out at what gear the guys were wearing. A lot of Reebok shoulders/elbows, a couple of Vapor and a couple of CCM CLs. Camera then pans to Marty St. Louis, and he's got Reebok shoulder caps, but the rest of his shoulders looks like he's wearing a vest (I mean like a suit vest). He had no collar or clavicle protection from what I could see. Just really shoulder caps and bicep pads. Also James Sheppard was wearing Reebok shoulders, but didn't use his bicep straps, so the bicep pad was just flapping around.Another player (didn't catch who it was) was wearing CCM shoulders that looked like CLs, but they were mostly white with red trim. Anybody know which model that is?

Pretty sure I saw McDonough and Girardi wearing them.
Mimizk 114 Report post Posted April 10, 2015 Thinner chest vest as Sherwood 5030 + the other shoulder cap is not rare combination even at higher league players, I think.
shoot_the_goalie 281 Report post Posted April 10, 2015 Thanks for posting pics guys. Maybe it's a generational thing too. I remember when I was a kid, lots of guys were wearing those really thin shoulders, like cooper, sherwood, jofa, etc. in the NHL, but last night I noticed most of the younger guys (and of course the goalies) were wearing pretty much the stock pad, whereas MSL was the only one really wearing the "vest" setup. mc88 160 Report post Posted April 10, 2015 I'm assuming that they'll mix and match or remove completely due to the sizing/feel. For example, right now, I know that I'm currently struggling with a pair of shoulders that will fit me. Adult Small is too small, while adult medium feels like I'm swimming in the ocean (velcro around chest is usually too loose and they'll ride up my neck when sitting). As a result, I plan on making my own franken-shoulder pads.I don't know for sure, but I highly doubt shoulder pads are custom made to the player's upper body. jimmy 194 Report post Posted April 10, 2015 Bruins did the same thing, mostly RBK and Jofa with some frankenstein ones as well. Funny to see what non-endorsed stuff they actually wear.
sectachrome 40 Report post Posted April 10, 2015 Yikes, I wouldn't wear some of that stuff for beer league, no less the NHL.

A rep isn't going in the room trying to get a marquee player to use a particular shin pad. I actually had a conversation with Brett Hull on Tuesday about this. He told me he would completely gut out his pants (just left thigh and tailbone pads) as well as his gloves. He would add more to his forearm on his elbows as he wore no-cuff gloves. A2rhino 63 Report post Posted April 10, 2015 Homer truly was crazy being that he made a career standing in front of the net with only minimal shoulder protection and zero chest protection. I do remember he had a pad from his pants that went high up his back for cross checks and such.

mc88 160 Report post Posted April 12, 2015 I had the same issue with the shoulders as you (I have size medium CCM U+CL). All I did was shorten the straps by cutting and resewing them to a length that worked better.I did that with a pair of CCM U+ Pros and all it did was make the bottom tight, but the top remained loose. Since I have a 39" chest, an adult small fits well, but the shoulder caps sit too high (the reason why I separated my shoulder this past season), while the medium fits very loose, but the shoulder caps sit right where they need to be. Right now I'm looking for a pair of CCM U+ CLs in Medium so I can take off the sternum, back, and collar bone protectors and add them to a pair of Farrell shoulder pads. The problem I'm having is that I can only find an adult small! Mediums are non-existent!
