Equipment superstitions.... do you have them?

Recommended Posts

Oh where do I start with this topic. I'm very OCD when it comes to putting on my gear. I realized how bad I was the other night getting dressed for a pick-up game after 8 months of being off the ice.

First off I have to have my penguin skate socks (they have penguins on them), I know its odd.

Second, pants then my hockey socks, left always goes on first and the away sock is on the left leg always, and home on the right, holes facing front...if i mess that up then i take it off and start over. Left skate then the right skate. I tighten the left skate first then the right, left shin pad gets slipped in and the the right. Tape in the same order out side the sock.. After that there's not much of a ritual, but the left side equipment goes on first. If i mess up at any point during it I have to start over or I don't feel right.

I also never re-tape my stick at the rink. I do it at home only. Won't even do it if I'm at a hotel during a tourny, if its in really bad shape then I will break down and do it IF I have to.

This isn't equipment related but I will not talk about any injuries before a game while at the rink. After a game sure I will talk then about them but not before a game. Its bad joo joo.

That's just some of my little superstitions/odd things I do. Trust me I have more that relate to pre-game stuff I do.

Always wear Easton wrist bands with the logo facing in. When I am getting dressed my helmet is hung above my head. My clothes is to the right folded neatly. I would put half my gear on (hip pants down) go outside the locker room and tape my stick. The tape has to be perfect before every game. After taping my stick I will flex the stick twice and walk back in the locker room. I never snap my chin strap until I tap the goalies pads.

Always put my socks on first, then my skates, my shins and my pants. Ever since I started it's been my order and will never change honestly.

Where do i start.. well i always go to the bathroom before i start to get ready then i tape both my sticks. my under stuff goes on next, pants, shirt, socks, jock, garter then my hockey socks after that i put my skates on but i always lace my skates all the way losely but the laces have to be flat and perfect not tangled or twisted, i then tighten my skates and put my shin pads on and tape then in place, after that i put on my pants and go to the bathroom again, the rest is nothing crazy.. i usually tape atleast one of my sticks during the first and second intermissions depending on how i am playing or the condition of the tape, after each period i take off my upper stuff and go to the bathroom again. i always have to be the last one out of the room before the game and before every period and the last off the ice after warmup.. the reason i go to the bathroom so much is because i intake so much water during game days to keep hydrated. i am very perticular about my sticks and hate when they are touched after being taped so i try to keep them close at all times hahah

i guess this looks bad but after four years of junior it has all become routine

Elbows and shins are always left then right, I do not touch my sticks until I'm ready to go.

My skate laces (as stated above) must all be straight with no tangles, same goes for taping my sticks, no wrinkles or unevenness.

And even crazier one of mine is watching a movie while wearing my gloves the night before, and I have to bring a pair of gloves everywhere I drive.

Since I have mysophobia I will use a new mouthguard every game and will not use someone else's water bottle, but not exactly superstition but that's just how I am.

Not so much about the equipment I guess...but I try not to wear the other team's colors. Of course, that goes out the door a lot of times since you can't change your gear's color but if I play a red team, I will never wear a red undershirt or that color with my clothing before that game.

Anything to do with pairs is always left and then right.

Like HockeySavants, my skate laces have to be even and untwisted but I find that lessens any sort of cutting/biting on my feet (and hands while tightening). But I'm still quite OCD about it.

I certainly have a routine, it's not a superstition.. I just couldn't physical get dressed any other way.

I've seen a few people putting their shins, socks and pants on before their skates, but I could never fit my skates through my pants without causing any damage..!

Unfortunately I don't own any guards, I guess I'll have to continue to just get dressed like a normal person?!

try to show up 30-35 minutes before the game.

watch whatever team is on before us, or just stare at the ice and picture myself making plays, skating around the ice, and shooting and scoring and setting up goals.

also before I step on the ice I always say to myself, "work hard and have fun"

aside from that its left skate before right skate.

i used to listen to my headphones (always heavy music) on the long car rides to games/torneys... and envision myself doing the same, i think it was more to just get yourself amped up. i always have to tape my stick after im done with everything on the lower half is on, then goes the elbows, shoulders, and jersey... i only put on my bucket after all that is done, and i have a routine of stretches i immediately have to do once im on the rink

I don't have a good enough memory to have superstitions. If I tried to have one, I would forget within a couple weeks. About the only thing I usually do is drink a coke in the locker room before a game. I need to do something for those 10PM starts.

Skins -> Jock Shorts -> Socks -> Hockey Socks -> Skates -> Shin Pads -> Pull socks over Shin Pads -> Ice Pants -> Tape Socks/Shins -> Sit around for a few minutes talk some crap. -> Shoulders -> Jersey -> Elbows -> Helmet

Then I skate out and do 2-3 slow laps then I stretch on the ice before I ever touch a puck.

Always pull the ends of sleeves of the jersey so it is in line with my elbow pad so it is really tight. Hate it when they are long and sit in your gloves.

Always 2.5 rotations with tape around my socks/shins then make sure it snaps off on the right of both my legs.

I always tape my sticks at home never at the rink ^.^
