  1. Yea they gave me a whole list of stuff to avoid. They just called me to up my dosage again. Went from 1.0 to 1.1 to 1.3 since Monday. They need it between 2 and 3.
  2. Well, I got my cast off today. Doctor said it was healing nicely. About time I got some good news. I was given a walking boot as well as an ankle brace (to wear so I can drive) and a set of exercises to start working on ankle mobility. She said I can start beating weight while in the walking boot but only about 10% at this point, and to gradually increase. She he said most people wear the brace all the time even under the boot so you don't have to switch between them and just wear the boot when I'm walking. Unfortunately the calf pain from the blood clot makes moving my ankle pretty painful so that may have to wait until the thinners really start working. Baby steps...
  3. I just set up a search on eBay for them a while back. I'll occasionally still get email notifications. you could also try icewarehouse
  4. Yea, upper edge of the skate digging in. Ive been wearing a neoprene sleeve on my ankle since I first got my original makos. Has worked perfectly.
  5. Awesome. Nurse just called me to tell me to increase my dose of blood thinners, that there will be somebody stopping by my home wed, thurs and fri this week for blood tests, and that I will be on these meds for "3-6 months", which is very different from "3 months" I was told at the hospital. Oh, and my grandma died this morning.
  6. Developed pain in my calf in the leg in the cast. Spent a fortune on an uber to go tongue hospital for blood work. Positive. Moved into another department to have my cast cut off and an ultrasound done. Positive. Immediately moved into the emergency ward. Prescribed blood thinner injections twice daily for 7 days, meanwhile also starting a once a day pill that I'll be taking for three months. That's about a month after my PT would have ended so I guess the timing isn't too terrible as its not like I can't be doing PT and some strength training in the mean time. If anything, it's forcing me to not rush back from the ankle break I'll get an extra month to regain my leg strength. They also put me back into a cast. This one seems much tighter than the other one. I was actually able to move my foot around a bit in the other one. Not at all in this one. I actually kind of like it better. It should only be on for two days though, as my appointment for X-rays out of plaster is Wednesday. The doctor said two weeks ago to come back this Friday but the only appointment they had was Wednesday unless I wanted to wait until the 30th. She told me on the phone that "two days before or after the requested date is still considered normal" and that they take that into consideration when they give you a return date anyway. Sigh... I miss my team :(
  7. Blood clot in my leg is minor. Injections of blood thinners every 12 hours and pills daily for 3 months. Could have been a lot worse!!
  8. In the emergency room with a blood clot in my leg.
  9. As far as I know, goalie gear is all unisex except for the jock. Or at least, women's versions don't exist as far as I've ever seen. Maybe you could get something custom made.
  10. If I was skating out I'd agree with you, but I'm much less worried playing goal, especially with the support VH skates offer. But regardless, I do agree that rushing it doesn't make sense. As for your phobia, I think a new pair of skates that you're excited to use would help a lot, but also I'd get a set of shot blockers just so you feel extra protected. I know I'll definitely be getting some if I ever skate out again, even though my injury wasn't caused by a shot. I'd just feel better knowing it's a bit better protected.
  11. Now that's some messed up logic right there.
  12. To compare that to my situation where I was also the cause of both of us going down, there is absolutely no excuse for a violent action with the intent to injure regardless of whatever prior contact there may have been. There is no reason for somebody to cross check you in the face or pummel you in the back of the head after tackling you from behind. None.
  13. I thought goalie would be rough on the knees, but it really isn't at all. It's more the hips than anything.
  14. I don't want chinsy crap called, but anything violent should be dealt with immediately. We're not talking about hooking, holding and tripping, here. We're talking about idiots who can't control themselves and start swinging as their first reaction. I think even beer leaguers should be able to understand and accept the difference.
  15. The league director in the league I used to play in sent out this email last year. I think I'm going to forward it to my current director:
  16. With this thread being as old and short as it is, you should also check out this thread http://modsquadhockey.com/forums/index.php?/topic/66097-starting-in-goal-as-an-adult/
  17. I broke my ankle May 19th after a guy jumped me from behind and my ankle twisted under me as I fell. Long story. I luckily happened to have a shock doctor ankle boot/brace with ice packs built in so I put that on. I went to urgent care the next morning. They took X-rays and confirmed it was broken. Just a slight fibula break. They told me to make an appointment with orthopaedics, and sent me home with a splint. I called first thing Monday morning (the 23rd) and the only appointment slot they had was 7am Friday. That seemed a bit ridiculous but I guess if that's all they had I'd take it. Went in on the 27th and they took more X-rays just to confirm the break, and to ensure there hadn't been any displacement in that week while in the splint. There was none, which meant no surgery required. Lucky! They put me in a plaster cast and sent me home, saying to make an appointment for a week from then. I went to the front desk to make an appointment for Friday the 3rd. The nurse said they didn't have anything and that I'd be going on a wait list. Uhh, okay... That seems a bit silly to me. If the doctor wants to see me in a week, I need to come back in a week. But okay. Fast forward another 6 days to the next Thursday. I get a call saying i have a 9am appointment for the next day. Okay, woo hoo I got lucky. So I go in on Friday the 3rd and get a different doctor. I have more X-rays done to take another look and make sure things are aligned well. Everything looked good. She said to come back in two weeks and I'd likely get put into a walking boot which she may or may not allow me to put weight on yet. She also said if I'm able to put weight on it that she can actually give me an ankle brace to allow me to drive (but I have to put the boot on once I get to work, before I start walking). So that's good. Again I go to the front desk, and again I'm told there's no appointment available. "I have an opening in three and a half weeks, or I can put you on the wait list", I'm told. Uh, the doctor said two weeks so no, 3.5 isn't going to work. Whatever. So here I am a week later. One more week of this cast! Thank god I bought a couple things to help me out. Specifically the iWalk 2.0 which basically acts like a pirate peg leg and I can almost walk normally with my hands free. I also bought a support that goes around the toilet. That thing is a MASSIVE help. And of course I also got a waterproof cast cover for showers. Thank god I work from home or I'd be screwed. Though I do find it hard to get work done laying on the couch. I also start a new job on the 20th so I REALLY hope I'm into a walking boot next Friday. unfortunately I'm missing playoffs in the league I got injured skating out in, and also miss playoffs in the league I actually care about (that I play goalie in). I think. If I'm in a cast for another week and a walking boot for 2 weeks after that. Assuming the bone is healed, that gives me 3 weeks before the championship game. Even if I can PT to the point where I walk with a limp I should still be able to skate thanks to how stiff and supportive my skates are. As long as the bone is fully healed it's more or less a "do as much as you can tolerate" at that point, right? I imagine I should be able to skate long before I can walk normally again. No? PS Sorry for the thread necro... Seemed pointless to start a new thread after I found this one via search.
  18. HAHAHA oh my god. They actually gave me a fighting major for the incident. That's amazing.
  19. Okay awesome. That was always the best part of super feet yellow: the heel stabilisation. If these are even more rigid that's probably s good thing for a 5'9" 235lb guy.
  20. For sure. It could have been been a lot worse just in my situation. The break is pretty minimal compared to what it could have been, which meant no surgery!
  21. I can definitely still complain about it ;)
  22. They mailed me the insurance paperwork. Just have to take a look. I didn't read it, but here's two emails from the league director: Me: Director: So that's it... kid is back in time for playoffs. If he had just made it 4, it would have ended his season (two rounds single-elimination playoffs). I still wouldn't have been happy (I've seen people banned for less) but I could have at least accepted it. On the bright side, I managed to find somebody to cover in net for me for my actual team for the rest of the season. I still show up to every game in my crutches or iWalk, wearing my jersey and hat. And sporting my fancy cast.
  23. I start my new job on the 20th. I find it endlessly amusing that after all these years and the completely separate paths my two closest friends and I took over that time, that all three of us ended up working for energy companies. The down side... I MIGHT be out of a cast by the time I start, but I'll still have a walking boot on that I may or may not be permitted to put weight onto yet. That really sucks when starting a new job.
