  1. I don't understand. Why would the inside of your knee be hitting the landing stack at all? Should be the front of your knee.
  2. Congrats on the win! The Bauer sleeves are for comfort, not protection. You definitely don't want to wear just those. I'd personally recommend the Passau knee pads. They're huge, but they don't feel like it once you're playing. I've had other knee pads that were huge and FELT huge and it was awful (the older Bauer Supreme model, specifically).
  3. Hah, and today I'm back to a significant limp using a cane for support. I suppose that's not surprising after the PT yesterday, and a couple hours of walking around the house cleaning and such like nothing happened. It's quite the rollercoaster with this crap!
  4. Okay I got in today for an assessment. It was actually a pretty reasonable price ($110 for 1.5 hour assessment). Mixed feelings. The therapist was great. Did some manipulation of the joints in the foot, used a metal thing to break up some scar tissue etc. On the other hand, the kid doing my exercises with me seemed to not really care a whole lot and seemed like he'd rather be elsewhere. Im thinking I'll go back to her next week, but likely a lot less after that. Especially since my personal trainer is in his final semester to become a physical therapist himself so while he can't (yet) do any of the adjustment of my joints he can definitely do the exercises with me. Walked without pain again today (before the PT at least). So apparently I failed to correlate the ibuprofen I took on Saturday for a headache with my sudden painless walking. Easy for me to do since I literally never take any kind of painkiller unless I have a headache that doesn't go away on its own after a few hours. So I took more ibuprofen this morning, and by 11am I was walking around the house almost like it was nothing. Cleaning, organising my hockey gear, etc. Then after PT today I got some REALLY good news. Apparently the hematologist told my doctor that I'm okay to get off the blood thinners after 3 months (which means I only have a month left). That's AWESOME!!!!! I'm so pumped right now.
  5. I thought the whole concept was that with standard radius you: - sacrifice glide if you go to a deeper cut, or; - sacrifice bite if you go to a shallower cut But, with FBV you can get as much or as little bite as you want without changing how much glide you get because of the flat bottom. At least that's the idea if I understood correctly from the massive FBV thread on here. Even as a poor skater I felt like it made a significant enough difference to keep doing it. Though that could very well be all in the head. Either way, while it wouldn't have kept me from buying Sparx, I'm sure it's very true that without it there may have been some customers who would have passed. Im just dying to get back on skates after this damn broken ankle so I can use my Sparx again!
  6. These bastards gave me the wrong date last week for PT. This week I get in there and they apparently referred me to OT not PT. So I told them to f-off and I'll just go to a 3rd party and pay out of pocket instead. I got a recommendation from my personal trainer (who is in his last semester to become a physical therapist himself, actually) for a good local place with reasonable rates and a pool. Hoping they can get me in today since I already took the day off work.
  7. Pretty much constant ice since it happened. Elevated when possible. Haven't taken any pain killers since the blood clot, actually.
  8. And there goes my optimism. I tripped at home and now my foot hurts all over. Even taking my shoe off hurt. Sigh.
  9. Figured I'd update this thread. Last sunday (Aug 7) I had my first appointment with my personal trainer (who I actually play hockey with). Just wanted to see what I could do and get back into things. I was actually able to do just about everything with no issue. The one that really shocked me was the gravity machine squats (TotalGym GTS) which means they're less than 100% body weight. Zero pain at all. The next day I felt great. Walking still hurt but quite a bit less. Tueday, everything else hurt. My shoulders and hips specifically as he did a ton of arm work and did some leg raises. Ouch. Weak hips and shoulders while not being able to walk very well and using a cane for support don't mix well. Ended up over-doing it Monday because of how well I felt, and paid for it the rest of the week. Iced and elevated my ankle every night after work. I thought my appointment for PT was wednesday, but apparently I was a week early. Not sure how that happened (since I was entering it into my calendar while still on the phone with them) but whatever. On Saturday, I got up and went for brunch, then went to go see Star Trek again. It felt pretty good all day. Then something weird happened. Saturday evening I got up off the couch to get a drink. I took one step (I had been trying to not use the cane while at home) and stopped. There was no pain. At all. What so ever. My wife says "whats wrong?" and I reply "uhh.. nothing. That's why I stopped... why doesn't this hurt?" A couple more steps, still nothing. WEIRD. So of course it was too good to be true and definitely started hurting a bit more, but it was tolerable. Mornings also still suck of course because everything is stiff. But at this point I have ALMOST a full walking stride back and barely put any weight on the cane at this point. Heck, I didn't use it at all yesterday while at home. Even up and down the stairs (can go up the stairs one foot per stair, but coming down I still have to take it one step at a time). Today I drove my car for the first time since the break. It was just too hard to get in and out of (Porsche Cayman, so you can imagine how low to the ground it is...). There's definitely still pain in my ankle and foot but it's tolerable. One thing my wife pointed out though, is I seem to be walking with my toe pointed outward a bit. I think this is something that just became habit because while in the walking boot it actually hurt to step down with my toes pointed straight ahead. I expect that as my ankle improves and my walking cadence improves that this will fix itself, though I may need to work on actively adjusting while walking. So once again, I have PT this wednesday. I'm also down to 9 days left in my supply of blood thinners. I'll have to call them to get more, however I'm planning on being like "I'm almost out, but I'm pretty close to 3 months anyway so I probably don't need a refill) and just see what they say. I've heard everywhere from 3 months to "at least 6" from three different doctors so who knows. It's getting there...
  10. In THIS thread, everything is welcome. I would hope that people wouldn't be posting here if they didn't want to learn :)
  11. Tying too tight is the only time I've ever had an issue. Sorry.
  12. Looks better than the ones with the ugly yellow logos, though not as good as grafs usually look aside from the yellow.
  13. Anyone see any issue with heating up the eyelet areas and opening them up a bit? I won't get as good of a wrap, but at this point I can't even get them on after recovering from the broken ankle.
  14. It's amazing how common this is. I did it too.
  15. First, you guys have fantastic jerseys. You're looking damn good. A whole hell of a lot better than I was by that point. Fairly smooth movements for your level. Keep at it! One thing to consider... edit the play down a touch more. A few too many "nothing is happening" moments. Of course this would be helped with the higher up camera angle, if the idea is to let the viewer see the play develop. Yes, I'm again suggesting the suction cup mount! ;) haha Keep at it. You're doing great!
  16. 100% yes keep doing them. Unfortunately I can't really watch at work AND I actually leave my laptop at work through the week these days it doesn't leave me much "screwing around on the internet" time. I guess that's a good thing. I'm still getting used to working a normal 8-5 M-F job. That said, I love your posts, especially a breakdown of mistakes. It's always good to know what was going through your head at the time, even if the answer is simply "mis-read, went down early" or whatever. What do you use to edit your videos, and also what do you use to export GIFs? I love the URLs gfycat assigns! "LonelyAgreeableCaterpillar" ... ROFL. You're right on the slow loading, too. I had considered editing your older posts to add a SPOILER tag around them so they aren't loaded immediately. I think that would work fine, if you chose to go that route in the future.
  17. I'm going to have to heat mine up and open them up. I tried putting them on yesterday and it was impossible.
  18. I think it'd be fun sometimes, but yea generally it's a "will be nice to give them a fresh edge while I'm packing up my gear to go play". The fact that I literally just "push play" and walk away is appealing to me.
  19. I'm blown away by how quickly you're recovering. Very jealous. I still can't walk without a cane. Never was able to walk in the boot without pain. I see people walking around in those boots like they werent even wearing one. Crazy.
  20. I didn't have any surgery. Regardless, the 6 week suggestion is irrelevant thanks to the blood thinners.
  21. What's with vendors/manufacturers who treat you like crap after they screw up?
  22. 10:42 - PING! haha :) This is great, you look fantastic out there. Your depth is pretty good, and your angles (as much as I can tell) is good as well. 11:33 - Down early, you really bit hard on his cut in. Patience, patience, patience! You also over-commit a bit to getting tight to the posts but you recovered quickly across the net on more than one occasion. Nice pushes! Awesome to have another beginner goalies GoPro videos to watch, though! You should consider the suction mount on the glass behind the net so you can see a lot more of whats going on. I normally wouldn't complain about just looking at a girls butt for 30 minutes but in this case I'd rather see your angles and positioning ;) Keep on going, you're doing awesome for only 7 months! A lot further along than I was by that point, FOR SURE.
  23. That covers both reasons I got one. The sharpenings I get at the rink are inconsistent. One guy is awful, another guy is okay. Either way, the shop is closed almost all of the time that I'm actually there (closes at 5pm, and our games are all 6:30pm or later). That means I go far longer than I would like between sharpening my skates. So that first time on the ice after a cut is awful. So having this machine lets me sharpen before every game with consistency. I use less than the standard number of passes (only about 1 or 2 passes) if they don't appear to have any nicks in them, and the standard cut if they do. It really is the consistency I want. Even if they aren't up to par with somebody who knows what they're doing, they're still better than the bad sharpenings I get locally, and I know what I'm going to get every single time. That said, I'm not sure I'd pay full retail for this thing, I'd probably buy an X01 instead (though not having to learn how to use it and get good at it is a plus for me). But at the Kickstarter price, I'm happy. @JR Boucicaut You'll see the finish this thing produces at WF. It will be my player skates so unfortunately the evenness will probably be crap (you saw how bad my old goalie skates were thanks to the local guy) but you'll get an idea of the finish at least.
