Recovery after broken ankle
IPv6Freely replied to ThePurpleCobra's topic in General Hockey Discussions
That's what I heard, too. And I'm sure it's true... I probably took quite a bit longer because I didn't have surgery. Doctor basically gave me the option. Said it WOULD heal on its own, but would heal quicker with surgery. I had already read this thread by then and decided to skip the plate. Was 100% willing to do it if he'd said I needed to though. You'll get there, it just may take time. Others in this thread have also mentioned having their plate removed if that's an issue... -

From the stories I've read in this thread, I have to say I feel VERY lucky to have not needed surgery. -
Recovery after broken ankle

Might as well give this one (hopefully final) update. I played my 3rd game (and 6th ice time including games and pickups) last night. For the first time, there was no pain at all. It was actually kind of an odd feeling. Despite losing, I was ecstatic after the game. The leg strength is coming back as well, which was evident in how little fatigue I had in general. The last few weeks I've been dying by the end of the game. Last night though, my water bottle was still 1/3 full when the game was over. That's usually a big indicator. The last time I was at PT, which was about 3-4 weeks ago now (I don't remember, I stopped going...) the goal was to get me doing calf raises (up and down standing on my toes) on my bad foot. At the time, I couldn't do it at all. Now, no problem. No pain while walking, even on unstable surfaces. We were in the mountains last week and while it was sore at the end of the day, I'm pretty sure my feet would have been sore after that much walking on unpaved trails no matter what, especially in the shoes I was in. So, I guess we'll call this horrible, horrible chapter of my life closed. -
No video of last nights game. Three reasons: First, I decided there's no point in making a video of a game or pickup when I'm just focused on making it through, rather than trying to improve. Eventually I'll hit that point again. The second reason is because I hadn't charged my GoPro since Tuesday, so it probably would have crapped out half way through anyway. And finally because @psulion22 doesn't seem to like my videos ;) Anyway, it was a good game. We dominated pretty much the entire thing as far as possession, but they had a D3/D4 goalie who was VERY good and almost unbeatable. Combine that with the breakdowns in our own end that more than once left their guy wide open with a ton of time to get a shot away, and it wasn't pretty. The final score was 6-2, though they scored two in the last 2 minutes. One on a breakaway, the other with less than 2 seconds left. Our D was skating with the puck in front of the net and their guy just skated in and chopped at his stick and the damn thing went top shelf. I should have been more ready but it was kind of a fluke play that it just went straight up like that. I was just about to head to the bench down 4-2 when they got that breakaway. Talk about deflating, especially with how much time we'd spent buzzing their net for the last 10 minutes. So, the game was way WAY closer than the score showed. However, I was in a great mood when the game ended. Because... well... I had no pain in my foot or ankle. Absolutely none. It was actually kind of a weird feeling. So, that's pretty awesome! Now I can't wait to get back out there next weekend! I'm skipping pickup this week though. I don't want to push it and the week I tried to both play in a game and in pickup it didn't go well. I'll wait a while before playing twice in a week.

Hey now! I already knew I was crap... I didn't need your opinion :P

I guess I'm lucky that that has never been an issue. I've always been the crappy one on the ice ;)

Not a great pickup, but better than last week. I threw away the footage from a couple weeks ago and didn't play last week. Normally no matter how bad of a night I have, I still edit the video to learn from. But last time was 95% the injured ankle so there was no real point. Anyway, an okay night. Ankle was mostly okay, but legs are still very weak which equals quick fatigue. First time playing against an ex-pro. You can see what he managed to do a couple times. The shot from center actually went UP! But he kept trying to go bar-down, which is kind of annoying in pickup, and I let him know it.

I haven't noticed anything. I find the coated blades don't burr nearly as much, though. So there's that. -

This was already addressed in this thread. Don't bake them. -
Forfeiting our game tomorrow because we won't have enough players. We have like 20 players on the roster but have been consistently getting 7 or less this season. Really annoying. Summer season sucks!

First game in my new Passau pads! I actually like playing these guys because it's generally a clean, highly skilled game. Unfortunately, we only had 6 skaters, one of which got sent off early for a head check (I didn't see what happened). We had one of our D show up late in the 1st which helped, but still... not enough. I was also playing this game with the flu, and couldn't hear out of my right ear from that. Also felt very very sick the whole time and was seriously worried about throwing up. Combine all that with my recovery from a broken ankle (which actually felt fine this game, thanks to my new pads that support the leg and ankle better!) and it was a bit of a shit show. We hung in there until the 3rd, when they started piling it on. Good saves followed by bad goals. We just simply ran out of gas. I know I sure did. Hopefully next week we have a better result!

Recovery after broken ankle

Ouch! I've never heard of that! I've slept with my Shock Doctor ankle ice pack thing on a few times, thankfully without issue. It's always nasty and warm when I take it off in the morning. haha I spoke too soon, though. Played pickup again last night. Ankle (or surrounding area... I'm honestly not sure) was killing me the entire time. The first pickup and the game on Sunday it hurt but once loosened up it felt fine for the most part. But this time... oh my god. I think I went down maybe 5-6 times the entire 1.5 hours. Probably let in 30+ goals, just because I didn't ever go down. I actually felt bad for the guys who were paying good money for the pickup session. Most of them knew about my injury, but my pickup last week was so good (honestly, better than most of the pickups I played while healthy) it was pretty disappointing. Anyway, pretty sure I'm just over-doing it. A game Sunday and then a 1.5 hour pickup on Tuesday is probably just too much. I'll probably stick to just the Sunday games for a while. I really need to work up more strength in my legs. You mentioned lateral jumps and vertical jumps. I wouldn't even attempt a jump at this point. Not because of the ankle, but the pain in the rest of the foot. -
Recovery after broken ankle

Yeah. I'm still nowhere near 100% but its mostly a strength thing, not an ankle thing. The only issue I have still is swelling. I just make sure I ice my ankle before playing to make sure I can get my skates on. Wouldn't be an issue if my games weren't late at night :) But as long as I ice my ankle before I leave home, I'm fine. My fall season ends in December, so I'm hoping you're right. My day-to-day life has returned to 95% normal, I just need to build that leg strength back up. -

I just use the leather for my coated blades. -
Here's the video from last night. The two bad goals are pretty embarrassing, but I'm also playing at only about 80%. So I can accept it knowing it will get better.

Awesome!! Good luck, and welcome to the club :) What gear did you get?!

Played my first league game last night after fucktard broke my ankle four+ months ago. I was doing well at first. Still hard to get up but it is what it is. I ended up letting in a super soft goal. Distance shot, one of the ones where you're 95% sure it's going to be blocked and don't want to go down in case it DOES get blocked and you're down and out. Especially with how hard it is to get up. Second goal was a rebound that went to a wide open guy in front of the net. I doubt I would have gotten to it even at 100%. Third goal was the most painful one. Damn thing just bounced around the crease for a good 20 seconds it felt like, and I just couldn't get a handle on it. Somehow it ended up going in while I was standing? I have absolutely no idea, but I'll have to watch the video to figure out what happened. Last goal (winning goal) was a really good tip that went 5-hole. Hopefully we'll see much less of those once I have my new pads! I made some pretty good saves. Mostly the glove (which is one reason I'm so terrified to use my new glove....) and one toe save to my left in the first period. Probably won't look as nearly as amazing in the video as it felt at the time, though. They never seem to, really.

Recovery after broken ankle

Probably should update this thing. I played pickup last Tuesday. It went really well, surprisingly. Getting up was difficult, but got easier over time as things loosened up. I ended up letting in only 5 goals over the course of 1.5 hours; none of them I would consider "bad". In fact, I ended up getting applause as I walked into the locker room! Wednesday-Friday last week both groins hurt a lot but that's no surprise considering how long I was off. Also, zero ankle pain. Well, not quite true... I had pain on the INSIDE of my ankle, but I've had that before when I first started playing goal. It's just from a lack of leg strength, forcing me to push up more than I normally would on my inside of my skate on the ice when getting up. That gets better as I get stronger so I'm not concerned about it. I got a text from the goalie who had been filling in for me for the last four months asking if I was playing (she's the other goalie during Tuesday pickup and I guess she noticed I was doing okay). I decided that, what the hell, I was going to give it a shot. If I survived a 1.5 hour pickup with no D, I should be able to survive a league game. So, last night I played a game a week ahead of schedule. I'd been eyeing Oct 2nd since mid-August when I was told I'd be getting off my blood thinners in mid-sept. It was pretty good, no significant pain. I'm using this as an opportunity to get used to getting up with my other leg (using the "bad" leg as the plant leg for standing up, which is more awkward but hurts much less). I still walk with a bit of a limp from the mid-foot still being a bit stiff, and I still ice it every night when I get home from work, but otherwise its seriously like it never happened. I don't even think about it anymore. Now I need to bring all the crap I bought to the used medical supply store. I'm tired of looking at the crutches, the iWalk, the boots, and all the other stuff I bought to make my life easier. They represent one of the lowest times of my life! -

Well that went about as expected. Russia tried their best and took a lead but Canada finally turned it up and then it was lights out. Russia played decently in the tournament but they're just still no match for Canada. -
That's to be expected on a roster made up of kids. I'm not going to fault them for being immature.
