Coaches: What Protective Gear on the Ice?
Giltis replied to clarkiestooth's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
Helmet always (I should get a visor though once I start coaching more), gloves, elbows. I will look at maybe getting those shorts though, that sounds like a good idea. -
On the Outside? I don't see how it could be more beneficial for protection to be flexible in this area. On the Inside? It might be interesting to have the skate feel differently in response to how hard you push on the skate. But I imagine more would opt for predictable response. But it could be quite cool to have your skate moulded to your feet every time you skate somehow. D3O is quite a wonderful product, I hope to see it used more even outside the world of Hockey and Motorbikes.

lol, I've asked for the new holders, as my fix is only temporary. I've actually been looking at the Bladetech, it seems pretty popular here.
-
I tried reseating the blade, but the noise was still there. I added a small piece of resilient plastic tape at the top of the blade, and all of the creaking is gone (after lacing it up on dry land). I'll actually skate on it tonight and see how it goes, but it's good to know that the sound and the feeling was coming from the holder and the blade, and not from the rivets or the skate itself. Crazy how that tiny little bit of space can make the whole boot feel off. https://imgur.com/a/NPNZVwr That black line mark shows much it moved in and out.
-
Left more than the right. The left one I can make the noise happen with my hand, the right one is very slight and I have to stand on it. I will try reseating the blade, and if that doesn't work, I'll add some material and see . It's so slight and doesn't affect my skating at all, but boy is it ever annoying. It makes me "aware" about my skating, like suddenly being aware of your breathing, your saliva, and blinking. Thanks for the vid! I'll def try this. I emailed True just so the issue is recorded and timestamped, they wanted to send me a new holder anyway, but I told them I'd try to fix it first.
-
That's what I would do, as well as lace the skates outside in rather than inside out.
-
Yeah that's why I tried loosening it a bit, but maybe I should take the blade out completely first. Is there a trick as to getting the blade out without cutting myself? Seems like it's in there good, I do see a little channel near the back of the blade, but I'm guessing that's to clear the screw assembly that holds it all together.

I hope it's ok to talk about the skate holders that ships with the True Skates. I'm getting a squeaking noise when I load up on one side (left more than the right). I've checked the tightness of the nut, and I've tried tighter, and looser, but nothing seems to get rid of the sound and the feeling. Using my palm, I can push near the front of the blade and see that the noise is coming from the blade moving in and out about 1 mm. Is this something that can be fixed? Or would I be looking at new holders? Otherwise the skates are fantastic, my sharpener worked his magic and everything feels great (he did recommend that before he profiled them to have the holders swapped out to Tuuks).

Did you contact Graf directly? What was the process like (did you just send tracings and photos)?
-
I wish you luck, I do recommend True, but I also think that you may have some buyer's remorse if you don't at least try for the Grafs. As for the custom process, I imagine it would be to give a much info as possible, take pictures from various angles, foot tracings, measurements, mark pain/pressure points, etc.
-
I would take Mike's word over my fitter's. Your situation is similar to mine, I would have been on the hook for the skates if I ordered them, and I could not take a 700+$ chance when for a bit more I could get a custom fit (I'd still consider a Graf Custom in the future if the company turns around). My True's are a recent purchase, so far I really like them, it's pretty nice having skates that don't hurt my feet in the 2nd half. It feels like I have to do less work to get around if that makes any sense but that could just be all in my head. I recommend them, but it is certainly expensive. If I were you and if you were really set on Grafs, I would contact them and tell them your dilemma and see if they could work with you somehow, where are you located?

The new STX Surgeon RX3 gear is out.
Giltis replied to ParabolicActivity's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I've been using the RX3 for about a dozen games now. Anyone else find it whippier than other sticks with comparable flex ratings? Maybe it feels that way to me because it's really light and balanced well. -
When I was shopping for new skates recently, I mainly looked at traditional Graf. The Graf fitter told me that I would be a good fit for G705 Wide which he didn't have on hand, and ok-ish on the G709 which I tried on (Graf footbed feels amazing! I will be getting a pair of these for my backups). He also told me that the PK series had similar dimensions as the G705 Regular. In the end I wasn't fully convinced that I would fit well in them and got True Custom. However when my backup skates finally go I will look at getting traditional Graf, maybe by then the company stock the shops better.

I'm also curious for the exact same reason (True skates, 280 runners), except that I'm a bit lighter (175 lbs) and a bit older. I've been on 10' for most of my life, with the last two years on 9'.
-
I've learnt so much from this thread, I never knew there was much of a difference.
-
I did go through my LHS, they took my number and placed it through the TRUE site, my card was only charged when the process updated itself, so I guess that may be why.
-
~10 day turnaround at the moment it seems like (still needs to get to the store though) https://imgur.com/zZJmuAu
-
I've also found that girdles feel almost too snug until like 10 hours in, and then everything sets into place real well. I certainly love my 7092s
-
Marsblade has made it into the NHL it seems like.
-
I have nothing else to compare it to really, I've been skating on Eastons as a young kid, but I've been on CCMs for a long while now (K-Series and then Tacks mid/upper-mid), I've no idea on how the Bauer trigger system feels like. But I think I will at least try the stock holders for a bit.
-
Yeah pretty much Sidelineswap (https://sidelineswap.com/search?q=true holders), has them for less than 100, sometimes dipping down to like 50$ (https://sidelineswap.com/gear/hockey/other-hockey/599644-new-step-steel-and-true-holder-size-11-296).
-
This is probably the reason I often see never used True Holders and StepSteel for sale for really cheap.
-
@Nicholas G Now that my 2019 Trues are ordered, would it be worth waiting for the XS Holder or swapping for the LS2 right away?
-
I wish I was kidding, I should specify that my experience is from the Car Restoration world, so it's even worse (but this type of behaviour is everywhere).
-
Wouldn't it be easy enough to have a particular stick dressed as something else though? Although some guys like Crosby are known to be extremely fickle with their equipment, even the graphics.
