  1. I'm close to 40 and I've been wanting to start playing in nets for a long while now. I have so many questions and any advice I can get would be lovely. Experience wise, I've played back up goalie from Novice to Midget and had success, but our family could not afford goalie pads of my own to play full time, and after my last season I've stopped playing for about 20 years. Now that I'm older and have been getting back into playing Pickup Hockey on a regular basis, I wanted try my hand at it again. To add fuel to the fire, my U8 son has picked up playing goalie for his hockey team as well, he's quite raw at the moment with his movements but he seems to be pretty decent at it, and more importantly been having fun. I think it'd be good bonding to learn together.I've been reading IPv6Freely's post but wanted to start a thread of my own, as some info seems either dated or not relevant to me. So far I've procured myself an NME8 in decent shape with some paint chips on the chin, and a CCM ExtremeFlex III Glove and a CCM Premier Blocker, both in decent shape but could use some mending. Quick Questions - What would be the best way to repair this? Or should I just wear a glove underneath? - What break is this? I'm gonna guess it's 590?
  2. So what would you suggest? That they recall all of the old packaging, and repackage them all with the updated package or maybe a "60" sticker over the old package? That seems like a huge waste. Either way, from the verbiage used it is clear to most of us that it's only an average.
  3. I've never worn these, but looking at GearGeek it's the most popular helmet in the NHL. Any particular reason why? Is it super light?
  4. Can I also add that girdles may feel almost too tight for a few game hours, but then it kinda wears in and you get a nice comfortable snug fit.
  5. Well exactly, the hit itself isn't that bad, but the fact that you're not expecting it makes it bad. I find Contact/non-Contact to be a whole different game, I exploit it during non-contact games sometimes because I know I can't get squished.
  6. A couple of thoughts 1 - I think it's generally understood that these numbers are estimates only. Especially if you are sharpening skates with heavy nicks, and massively uneven edges. I think even my local sharpener has a surcharge for rusty blades and the such. Same discrepancy would apply if you're just sharpening JR blades vs SR length blades, and akin to complaining that your new car only gets 15 mpg when you drive the way you drive, even though the EPA rating is much higher. 2- That flat bottom sharpening video is an eye opener, and makes me realize why some of my friends could not skate on Flat bottom sharpens. Also as an aside, it's become a huge pet peeve of mine when people say "Fake News" for things, it's lazy and dismissive to an actual conversation.
  7. Right, by intent I mean intent to check in a non-check league and not intent to injure. There are calls in my league where both the players are going after the puck a little too hard, and one gets knocked down incidentally, that is still considered 2 min. Here he obviously just want to knock the other guy down without any effort on the puck itself.
  8. I don't use these, but I've heard some people using Derby Laces? https://derbylaces.com/
  9. At least 2 mins in a non-checking league, in my league if there's intent like this then he's often gone for longer. Strange play by him, because I think he had a clean chance of playing the puck instead.
  10. I would inspect the eyelets to make sure there's no damage to them (on the inside as well) or a defect that might be destroying your laces. I once was in a pile up where I got my laces cut from a skate blade that had also damaged my eyelets unbeknownst to me, and when I went to put in new laces in the locker room it shredded my emergency pair immediately.
  11. That seems like it'd lead to all sorts of trouble down the line. I'd try to remove it ASAP and see the condition of the rivets.
  12. Growing up, I thought it would be something like a spray that you could peel off once damaged, like those spray on gloves, but more durable. I guess we have PlastiDip sort of.
  13. I've tried it and didn't like it. The thing that was cool though was the glide that I felt from not having anything along the bottom. But it just didn't sit well with me. Out of like 80~100 guys in our league, only one guy uses it and swears by them. He's also easily top 5 in terms of skill/level played, so YMMV (he can do the Michigan with it).
  14. This is the coolest thing I've ever seen. I'm not a SK passport holder, but I was born in Seoul, so it'd be a bit iffy for me to participate. Would it somehow be possible for a jersey exchange with DPRK players even if we don't go? It would be pretty cool to show up in my Beer League with a jersey from DPRK.
  15. Is this place using one of your machines? https://www.performaxx.ca/
  16. I also have an accessory navicular bone and had to give up on Tacks. I went True, but I would also scour for some Graf 705 Wide, they are a bit tight on my forefoot, but my navicular bone seems ok.
  17. Just make sure they don't fall over during the bake, like this guy's Mako's https://sidelineswap.com/gear/hockey/skates/player-skates/1196085-easton-mako-hockey-skates-senior-read-description
  18. I'm late to the discussion but it's the cold. Watches with mechanical movements are temp sensitive, regulated by your body heat on your wrist. Once I left my watch's backplate completely touching the steel base of my nightstand lamp, and I've also had a glass of ice water on top of the base near the watch, by morning it had lost about an hour.
  19. He is probably the only good sharpener in my immediate area. The best in the city is a bit far from me (45 mins).
  20. I get that, my sharpener doesn't. One of the many reasons that I'm tempted to get a Sparx.
  21. I absolutely would love to try Flare for both indoors and out. I even have someone in EDM that wants to ship me a pair as a gift, but having spoken to the sharpener that I go to, he half-refuses to sharpen them. Maybe I'll just stick with Step, I dunno, it's not a big rush for now.
  22. The original BladeTech used a proprietary holder design and had a spring if I remember correctly. The Current one doesn't and uses a thinner portion to rebound. The current BladeTech seems pretty popular for what it is where I live (way behind Step and Byonic). I was thinking of putting them on my Outdoor skates as I'm hoping it acts as a dampener against all the bumps and ridges.
  23. It's quite horrendous looking, I'd try it, but not at that price.
  24. If I was skating 10 hours a day, I would get 2~3 pairs at a time, and rotate them every 5 hours. Regular shoes work the same way, two shoes bought one after another wear out much faster than two shoes bought at the same time and swapped every day.
