I recently picked up a pair of TF9 skates and had Marsblade R1's installed. They were purchased and converted from a reputable local shop that has been a True dealer for years and done tons of Marsblade conversions. Up until yesterday I had skated in them for an hour and a half or so; mostly casual skating while stickhandling just to get comfortable and see how they feel. Yesterday I played my first game in them and had zero complaints. When I got home and took them out of my bag I happen to notice a crack on the bottom edge of the toe cap. This isn't present on the other boot or other side of the toe cap. I suppose it could have been from an impact of puck or something, but that seems pretty crazy for brand new skates. The crack is just at this edge; it does not extend past that circular branding stamp or the rivet. Has anyone else experienced this? I'll keep an eye on it to see if it gets worse, but should this be a concern? Wasn't sure if this should go in the True skate thread or on it's own so feel free to move if necessary.

Grippers came in and I was able to test them out on the rink today. They hold true to their name and grip awesome! That said, the rink was also completely clean of any debris which may have contributed to some of the slide outs before. Either way, thank you guys for the recommendation. Think I found wheels for smooth concrete

Strange that you wear a FULL size difference in Bauer skates. Especially with the Vapor being the smaller of the two. Am I the only one that finds that odd? I can get away with going down a 1/2 size down in Supreme vs what I wear in Vapor due to the additional volume in the boot, but not the other way around. When you say the 7 was very snug, were you referring to pre-baking? That's how they're supposed to be. Once you bake them they should open up and mold perfectly to your foot. If you went up 1/2 a size because they felt better before baking, they're likely going to be too large on you after they're baked. Obviously everyone's feet are different but I went down a half size with the TF9s from what I wear in Vapors and they fit perfect after baking. You seem to have done the opposite. Getting the Trues on was the most difficult part (for me) compared to a traditional hockey boot. I had to undo the top one to two eyelets, push the tongue out, then do the twist thing to get my foot in. Definitely took practice not only to get my foot in, but also to lace those top eyelets once my foot was in the boot because the ankle wrap is so tight -
I’ve always played on rough asphalt so I can’t comment on smooth concrete surface previously. The first set of wheels were my Labeda Asphalts that I use on, uh, asphalt. They weren’t brand new but weren’t worn down a crazy amount either. Age-wise they were only a few months old. The MPC Freestyle wheels’ first roll was on this smooth concrete so they were brand new. I ordered a set of yellow grippers online since no where nearby had both sizes in stock. I hope to have here this weekend so I can try them out Sunday or Monday and see how those perform

Looks like I have my answer. Thanks guys! I’ll try and pick some up this weekend. Miller, good point about the dust. That could very well be

Reviving this post from the dead as the city has finally taken the locks off the outdoor rink and once vaccinated I'd like to begin playing more. I've used Labeda Asphalt (orange up front and white in the back) for years on asphalt before moving to MPC Freestyle during quarantine. I skated both sets of wheels on the smooth concrete outdoor surface, which is a surface I have never really played on before, and they all slide out from under me when making tight turns/hard cuts. Since those hardnesses are basically 83a, 84a, and 85a, I am looking to move to something slightly softer for added grip. Can't seem to find much info on the Konixx Tachyon, wasn't sure if the Konixx Pure +1 would be too soft for concrete, also considered Rink Rat Trickster XX or Labeda Grippers. I'm around 190lbs and at this point care more about grip than top end speed. Recommendations?

I went through exactly this a few months back. The CCM V08 was recommended to me and it fit great. Really like it so far. The Tacks 110 was also recommended and while I didn’t try that specific model, I did try the 310 and 710 and didn’t like either. They pinched the back of my head near the adjustment spot

A trick I’ve done is to use some hockey tape to make a pull tab. Never tried it when I used Speedplates, but it works great for Superfeet -
True fits wider and has more volume like Tacks/Supreme/Mission. So if that’s the kind of boot that fits you, the Trues should fit

I still haven’t used the RR wheels, but continue to roll on the MPC wheels. They’re so damn comfortable to skate on! I do find them sliding out from under me more often compared to Labeda Asphalts I’m used to when I do a real tight turn, but I can also use that to my advantage to help me slide stop better. It’s worth noting that I still haven’t played any kind of game with these wheels since there aren’t any games going on yet so this is purely from practice and general skating.

Wow, I had no idea you could do that. Ah well, I’m happy with the 1x. Funny, the cracked knee caps was why I stayed away from CCM shins

FWIW, I tried the 1X lite shins when they came out to replace the 1X shins I was using and agree, they were garbage. Was able to find another pair of 1X which are superior (IMO). The 2X Pro is also a step down compared to the 1X in terms of protection and build quality. The 1X may not be lighter than the 1X lite or the 2X pro, but they’re better in most every other way

I second the UCLP pants. I wear CCM quick lite (or crazy lite, I always forget which one) shoulders from 5-6 years ago. Low profile, moisture wicking, and comfortable as hell

I threw on a pair of 108” laces I had lying around and I could loosen them up enough like you’re saying. The downside is I have a LOT of lace left over. I might try picking up a pair of unwaxed 96” laces with the hope I could stretch them a bit to achieve the same thing. Or worse case only have to leave the very top eyelet undone. That second eyelet seems to be the hardest one to get through. I’ve been sitting in my place taking my boots on and off. Never thought it would be so difficult to do. Lol! 96” waxed on the left, 108” unwaxed on the right -

How long of laces are you using? I swapped in 96” (on an 8R boot) as I didn’t want a foot of extra lace flopping about once they’re tied -

Is this the tongue you went with? https://www.hockeyvancouver.ca/products/true-t-guard-felt-replacement-skate-tongues I tried putting them on with only the top eyelet undone and it wasn’t happening regardless of how I twisted my foot. Had to undo both top eyelets. Would love to not have to do this at all as it’s not something I’ve needed to do with traditional skates -

Cool, thanks. I’ll leave them as-is and try to get used to them before flaring out the cuff -

So what’s the point of the cuff roll video by True? Or maybe the better question is, if you do heat up the cuff roll and flare it out a bit, is there any harm in doing so assuming you’d simply need to tie the laces tighter to bring the cuff back in? Reading through a good portion of this thread, a lot of people mention making their own tweaks to get the skates dialed in specifically for them. Suppose I need to figure out what that is for me since I’m so used to traditional boots. Just trying to get to a good starting point and will go from there -

Thank you. Just put in slightly longer laces which would allow me to do this. Still more difficult than I’ve ever had with other skates, but I’m sure with practice and once the skate breaks in a bit more it’ll get easier. I’m also wondering if it’s more difficult because of the memory foam tongue on the TF9 vs a traditional felt tongue? I was thinking about picking up a different tongue for these skates -

Hey guys, new True user and I’m hoping you can help me out. I had my TF9s baked and they fit great. I do have to undo the top two eyelets in order to open the tongue up enough to be able to twist my foot at an angle to slide it into the boot. The problem is, I can’t get laces through the top two eyelets once the skates are on. The wrap is simply too snug against the tongue. I’ve seen True’s video about heating up this area and rolling out the cuffs, but doesn’t that defeat the purpose of the wrap? I’ve tried skating with the top two eyelets undone but it just doesn’t feel ‘right’. At least not yet having skated my entire life on traditional boots. suggestions/advice? -
Yeah, no idea what this is supposed to be

I can't tell from the pic, but what size is the Itech cage? My understanding is Bauer discontinued the cage after they purchased Itech and then came out with the Reakt cage instead. But I think the Itech is supposed to fit longer than the Reakt cage? So more like the CCM cages?

This thread was extremely helpful in getting a pair of TF9 that fit properly. Thank you all. I went from a Bauer 8.5D to a True 8R. Once baked they fit both my feet perfectly! Wondering if anyone has tried the felt t-guard tongue with these? The stock tongue seems fine, but from a looks perspective, I prefer traditional felt. Mounted the R1's to the Trues and removed most of the colorful graphics as they were too loud for me. Very happy I made the jump to these. Now I just hope they hold up durability-wise.

Having just picked up a pair of TF9’s, I went 8R when I normally wear an 8.5D in Bauer. I don’t have abnormally shaped feet although my left foot is slightly longer than my right. My ideal size in Bauers is 8.25D, but when I buy retail I normally go with 8.5 because an 8 cramps the toes on my left foot too much. With the Trues, I was worried 8 might be too big and I’d have to step down to 7.5, then once I tried them on the 8’s felt too snug in the toes. However after baking them they fit damn near perfect and gave both my feet the space needed in the toe box.

No, which is obviously concerning for a skate I’ve never worn before, but based on what they’re going for on the secondhand market I would be able to get my money back without much trouble. I appreciate the insight about forefoot width. Gives me something to think about. Would it even be worth trying on a pair at a store? Seems as though the consensus is that you *have* to bake them before you know if they fit, but if thermoformability is mostly around the ankle, would I be able to properly judge forefoot width straight outta the box?
