  1. So, does this stand by women professionals signal the beginning of the end or a new beginning for women's professional hockey in North America? https://www.tsn.ca/more-than-200-players-call-for-overhaul-of-women-s-pro-hockey-1.1299658 The real question is whether or not the NHL finally gives more than a token gesture of support and really gets behind something. The biggest hurdle, in my opinion, is that the women's game just doesn't garner the kind of attention and exposure that it needs to really create the interest and ultimately consumer demand to be self-sustaining at this juncture.
  2. It is a data driven argument but the data itself was poorly derived. I know I should have left it alone but I couldn't help myself. Its just that when someone with qualified experience in the area points that the testing is flawed and yet people still cling to the data collected from those same flawed tests (even while accepting the testing is flawed) it just makes no sense to me.
  3. Now we're arguing the semantics of "data"? If the testing method is flawed then the data collected from that method is meaningless. "If something hits this helmet right here then there is this much force associated." "What does that mean for my head?" "Fuck if I know, good luck."
  4. How can you possibly "properly collect data" from a testing procedure that is flawed by its very nature?
  5. Icing isn't a judgement call in that case. You either win the race to the dot or your don't. Another couple of these types of goals occur and the league will overreact and we'll have reviews for icings on top of the reviews for offsides and goalie interference.
  6. So, you pull a quote that supports the legend and then scoff at the truth of it? Why bother then?
  7. I do remember as my 8th grade season of Bantams started, I told my father my skates felt really tight. He took me down to the shop and I had apparently grown out of the size 6 skates that I had been wearing. My new pair was a size 9. I could see the Coffey story being true back before the mid-90's shift to the super stiff boot but definitely not something that could happen in the modern-age skate.
  8. I've seen leagues try to poach players from other leagues. It is frowned upon because around here, each league is somebody's business. If the south pick-up was being publicized at the north skate then I can see how the north guy would have been peeved. Yes, people have a right to choose but you don't see a Chevy dealer sitting outside the door of the Mazda dealership handing out flyers, either.
  9. And that was a mistake of the NHL. There are numerous examples of egregious missed or blown calls, many with game or series deciding consequences. It would have been fine to do the typical, "The on-ice officials saw xxxxxx and made the call based on yyyyyyyy" explanation and be done with it. Any kind of apology that is made public just pours gasoline on the fire.
  10. In the old days, performance fit meant the tightest skate that you could cram your foot into. There are legends of Coffey wearing a skate 2 sizes too small.
  11. Good start taking game 1 on tired legs. They caught a team coming off a long lay-off and that always helps. I expect Columbus to be much better from the drop of the puck for game 2.
  12. Maybe in the long-drive competition or closest to the pin.
  13. The NHL always pares down the list of officials as the rounds go on in the playoffs. I wonder if whatever pair was doing the Sharks-Knights game where Couture received the phantom goalie interference penalty that negated a SJ goal and led to a VGK powerplay goal that decided that game also was dropped from the officials rotation. Or do people only care about game deciding calls in game 7?
  14. Technically speaking, they don't "expand in length" but your foot settles into the heel and ankle padding.
  15. Matthews hate? Where exactly are all of these "Matthews-haters" that you speak of? I get that there will be some Leafs fans who will be irate that he didn't score 6 goals in game 7 to lead them to victory but there isn't any Matthews hate south of the border.
  16. Life is too short to spend your free time and discretionary income on something that you aren't enjoying. Take time away and if you get the itch then find somewhere else to play other than where it wasn't fun anymore. Remember, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
  17. Stay strong, Steve. Oh, and I agree the Fins got robbed. It was such a bang bang play that the US goalie had no chance for the rebound even had there not been contact. Common sense says the goal should have stood.
  18. Back when I reffed I would sometimes point at the offending player with my unraised arm until I had a good handle on who the penalty was going to be on. When I blew the whistle I would full stop, definitely point at the offending player and with a loud voice call out player number, jersey color and infraction with appropriate hand signal.
  19. Leafs smothered the Bruins tonight. They struggled to generate anything. You can always tell early when the Bruins are going to lose and this was one of those nights. They have to find a way to create space.
  20. DeBrusk deserved a cross-check to the head? Ummmmmm, ok. The two were after each other all night, mostly stemming from Kadri's slew-footish/questionable finish on DeBrusk late in game 1. Surprised this isn't somehow all Marchand's fault.
  21. Tonight is the first time I've ever seen a player lie down on the guy they cheap shotted to hide from retribution. Kadri deserves anything that happens to him.
  22. Wait, what..........pros don't use the retail patterns that have their names on them? Such talk.
  23. I love the internet, you can always count on that one guy to be Joe Literal.
