VH Footwear/TRUE by Scott Van Horne
shoeshine boy replied to dsjunior1388's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
they got back to me this morning. it's funny, all these years and I've never heard of the Canadian holiday known as Family Day. 😆 and for the other poster kind enough to answer, we didn't really get her feet scanned at a shop. JR did measurements for us when we visited Detroit for USA Hockey Nationals a few years ago. it was right in the middle of the transition from VH to True. -

I used the search feature but couldn't easily find an answer to my question so...... how do we get new tendon guards when the originals break? the tendon guard on my gf's VH/True skates has cracked. a google search wasn't horribly helpful. I emailed True but haven't heard anything back as of yet. we don't have a local shop that sells True skates so that's not an option. -
we basically do that now. typically the season ends on a Sunday. we usually have the eval the following Tuesday or Thursday. it then takes at least a week to complete the draft and then we send out the first month of the schedule.

and that idea has been floated but that becomes problematic too. imagine you've got a guy on your team that just can't hang and you need to drop him. you've got to tell him mid-season that you're not having him back in order for him to find another team &/or attend the eval to catch the eye of a captain in a lower division, then he's got to play 6+ games with a team that doesn't want him? I've been that player told 2-3 games before the season's end and while appreciated being told in time to find another team it made me not want to go play with that team for the rest of the season. it seems like there's no good way to make everyone happy but it also seems like our current method is not unusual.

we draft as needed. our league has 70 teams in 9 different divisions. our last eval skate we had 70 people show up. where all these people come from every season I have no idea. if you're already spoken for by a particular team then you are just hoping to be rated at that level during the eval skate. if you don't have a home yet then the eval skate is the place to be seen by all the captains who have available spots. when we draft we start with our most advanced level and work our way down. some seasons we have enough players of a similar skill level to make entire new teams or "draft teams", as we call them. this is often what makes it impossible to make the schedule beforehand, as some of our players are wanting us to do.

many thanks to those that responded. my first instinct is to tell our players how good they've got it but that seems harsh. I'm sure we'll still keep looking for options but it's nice to know that if anything, we do a BETTER job than the average league.

Malkin Wearing Two Different Gloves
shoeshine boy replied to BenBreeg's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
did he do it the entire game or just a shift or two? remember, you can't access the lockerroom from the bench at MSG so there might've been an issue that forced Geno to use 1 CCM glove. -
that's what we're grappling with. some people want to move the eval skate to mid-season of the previous season. I think it's not good to have people come try out and then tell them, "ok, now you've got to wait 3 months to see if a team picks you up.". we have 2 seasons a year, 20 games plus playoffs. some players also want to move registration to mid season as well. imo I think that could create issues if you're dumping a player. I've been that player that's been dumped and rather than play the last 3 games I just bailed because it was too awkward for me.

nope, about as far away as I could be in the USA. I'm in Atlanta

question for you guys that play some form of organized hockey: how long before the season starts does your league release your schedule? back story: our league (independent, not run by a rink) has 9 skill divisions and 70 teams. we have an eval skate for new players between seasons (usually around 3 weeks before we begin) and teams looking for players can draft from that pool though some players are ear-marked for certain teams and must be rated at the proper level. we routinely have 65-70 new players show up at each eval skate. 2 of the last 3 seasons we've had enough players left over to make new teams. because of this sometimes we don't get the first month of the schedule until about a week before. we then usually get the remainder of the schedule a few weeks later. basically players are bitching that they can't set their work travel schedules soon enough causing them to miss games and they want us to figure out a way to release the schedule before we even have the eval skate so I'm curious how other leagues do it. thanks, I'll hang up and listen. 🙂

this is true. I'm the head scorekeeper for my league and when I'm working a game I'll only correct the ref if I know for a fact that he got the wrong numbers and I NEVER give them a hard time about it. try watching a game of 2 teams that you don't know and see how often you get that second assist. oh, and be trying to skate and officiate a game at the same time 🙂

so glad LA is going to grey cuffs! I'm so tired of teams having boring black and white gloves. I treasure my yellow outline Bruins gloves.

HockeyTracker for Apple Watch
shoeshine boy replied to Sabes35's topic in General Hockey Discussions
appreciate the response. :) I was figuring that it was only counting calories while in the midst of a shift but wasn't sure. the only bad part about that is that even when you go back to the bench you're burning calories that you don't seem to get "credit" for. last night, for instance all rings closed except my Move ring. I was 30 calories short despite playing in a 90 minute hockey game. that doesn't seem right. I will say though, I love the re-design for version 2.0 my first game on 7/1 was using v1.0 which was ok but the new version has a much better design and is so much cleaner. thank you so much for bringing this to beer leaguers everywhere. :) -
HockeyTracker for Apple Watch
shoeshine boy replied to Sabes35's topic in General Hockey Discussions
bumping this topic to ask a few things. I recently switched from Fitbit to Apple Watch and am doing the Hockey Tracker app on a trial basis. for the most part it seems pretty cool but I'm mostly concerned with calorie burn. when tracking on my Fitbit, depending on the game I would average anywhere from 600-800 calories burned depending on how many lines we had. for the Apple Watch's native tracking I was averaging roughly the same amount of "active calories". last night we had 2 lines and as a center I skated a lot. by the end of the game (three 25:00 run-time periods) the Hockey Tracker had only counted 297 calories burned which seems a bit low. is it only counting calories burned while in the midst of a shift? I'm also curious how it detects a shift. I had some shifts that were way too short (25 sec) and others that were way too long (4:11. at 48 years old there's no way I stayed out that long) -
I wasn't aware that NYR were having attendance issues. don't they fill MSG pretty much all the time?

I'm not normally into pink hockey equipment but that stick is epic!

Sparx Skate Sharpener - At home sharpener
shoeshine boy replied to tamtamg's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I get what you're saying about "feeling the blade/wheel" when using a manual machine but it doesn't mean that you can't tell these things when an automatic machine is sharpening the skates. I have both a Wissota and a Sparx. yes, when I sharpened on the Wissota I could feel when hitting a bad spot but with my Sparx I can hear the difference in the blade. I never simply set it and leave the room. I set the skate in and either pack my bag, tidy up the basement or sometimes just stand there and watch but I'm always listening to how the wheel is hitting the blade. in the year I've had my Sparx I have been VERY impressed with it's ease of use and consistency of quality even edges. -
happy early Xmas to me:

I've been using this one for about a year. it does the job just fine and is much more affordable than most. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hockey-Skate-EDGE-CHECKER-FewOptions-/172349229987?hash=item2820d08ba3:g:I~YAAOSwJ4hY-tgE
