Dis/advantages of different palms

Recommended Posts

I know there are a few different glove palm threads around at the moment (so please don't shoot me), but I really want to know what are all the advantages and disadvantages(durability, grip, suppleness, quick drying, etc) of all the different palm options ie: Goatskain, cowhide, nash, mustang, pittards, digital, etc? I would prefer advise from those who have some knowledge in the manufactoring of gloves, and not so much personal prefrence, but all are welcome to post! ;)

I can tell you that if you're looking for a durable palm, that still offers great feel, the Dura-Stretch palm in the Vapor XX is pretty damn good.

The Dura (as in durable) lasts 3-5 times longer than a regular Clarino palm, and Stretch (as in stretchable) gives you nice flexibility. The Dura-Stretch is 2X thinner than regular Clarino, but the thread is so thin the weave so tight that the tape of your stick has no effect on this material. Moreover, this palm doesn't tend to get all dry and stiff.

Over the Dura-Stretch, the XX has a Nash palm, which is similar to Clarino. It is used over the Dura-Stretch because the only negative aspect of this material is that it's slipery. Therefore, the Nash will give you more control over your stick. Plus, it dries pretty fast. The nash will wear down over time, but you'll never go through the black Dura-Stretch.

This palm isn't sticky at all, so if you don't like grip feel, that's pretty good for you. And if you like grip, you can still go with a grip stick.

If you're looking for feel, the Vapor XXX Nash palm is very thin, with only one layer of material. The thinner the material between your hand and the stick, the better the feel. However, it will wear faster, but you can still use the extra set of palms attached to the gloves in store...

So hockeychamp, are you saying that the vapors that you have (which model?) have crappy palms compared to a nash palm. Don't vapor XXX's have a clarino palm, which is very similar to nash?

That's what I figured. I have goatskin on my X70's and I liked the feel of the XXX's alot better. I think I will buy a pair of those or maybe some MIA's in the next few months.

The XXX have a pro-stock clarino palm. If you cant play with that palm, you shouldnt be playing.

I'm talking about the XX palm. The stretch palm kills your feeling on the stick, and it's so thick.

Does anyone have any infomation on Goatskin or Digital palms?

I have TPS's digital palms on mine and I love them. Getting worn down some and it's a little more of a pain than I thought when paired with a grip stick, but I love them.

I like their durability and they've held up better than any palm I've had since Easton used to have tackified palms. They dry well and mine have started to become a little crusty, but some shaving cream on the palm and they're good to go.

I have goat palms on my x80's. It is a great palm. Nice grip, pretty good feel and they are a year and a half old and still pretty supple. I have given it the shaving cream treatment a couple of times. I am going to get a pair of custom eagles made in the next few months hopefully and I will probably go goat again, although I am curious about the digital. Has anyone used both and have a prefernce in regards to grip and feel? Durability isn't a huge issue for me since I usually only play twice a week anyway.

When digital gets wet it's ridiculously slippery.

I disagree. Synthetic digital does that, and, gums up pretty bad too.

The Pittards Digital palm that eagle offers doesn't have this problem though right?

Can you guys post pictures of the different palms? I'm not very aware of the differences and putting together with the visual look of the palms with their names.

Thanks!
