Me getting hit through the glass at Nationals!

Now we shouldn't forget about the mass part of that equation, Gavin. Not too many 300 lb. skaters out there, but ~300 lb. D-Linemen? Very common. Maybe it's best to say both sports are brutal, I just happen to think football is a more frequent brutality. Can't help but respect those NHLers, doing it 82 times opposed to 16. Maybe the hits are close in numbers considering the difference in schedules. It'd be interesting none the less.

Oh yeah I hadn't even considered the difference in the number of games. Oh well they're different sports, what can I say? I know which one is my favorite :)

Baseball was my first love, football was a young love, hockey may just become the love that grows stronger as time wears on because of maturity and understanding. :D

You can't compare both sport's hitting, it's just unreal. How often do you see a guy hitting another with his shoulder's side in football? That's a clean hit in hockey but you'll never see that in football.

In football, you get to see helmet to helmet contacts, "spears" (that's a term i know from wrestling, i dunno if it applies here  ). The goal is the bring to other guy down and you can use your hand for it...you don't have a stick to hold...

The speed of hockey is far higher than football as well. Players may not have the same mass in hockey but the increased velocity and the addition of the (hard) boards should be factored in. Remember F=M(A)

Hideous (proper spelling), it's a clean hit in football as well. Anything goes. However, remember football players have protection on shoulders, head, and upper legs. No shinnies or arm protection.

Chadd-

All I'm saying is that Mass is part of the equation as well. In fact, equal to Velocity. Frequency is the factor that you have to realistically give the edge to a football game. However, as mentioned before, an NHLer plays 66 more games than an NFL player. My estimation is that throughout the course of a pro football season the human body abuse is probably fairly similar to a hockey season (professionally).

Woah dude stop and think that through for a second. I bet pro hockey players get more abuse over the course of a playoff run than a footballer would get over the course of a season. Plus consider the fact that only a few positions on the football field really get pounded... no one in hockey gets a "hands-off" job like a punt kicker in football.

Wouldn't that be crazy? Have like ... "penalty-shot" and "shootout" specialties? They coud sit on the bench, look cool and drink gatorade all game. LOL the more I think about it, the cooler hockey is just the way it is.

Now you're taking it a little too far, there, Gavin. The goalie hits? So he takes a few pucks to some pads. Don't think for a minute that punters or kickers (ever heard of kick-offs?) never hit.

I'm going to rest this argument on my end, keep discussing if you wish. You guys have never strapped on the pads and taken the field at a highly competitive level, and I've never done so on ice. Unless we've got someone who has played both in college, it's probably senseless to discuss and I don't see it worth my time to participate. Stupid of me to start this discussion on an ice hockey message board.

You most likely wouldn't win a hockey vs. football arguement on a hockey board. Props for trying though. ;)

I thought this topic was about "Edge getting hit through the glass at Nationals", not "which sport, football or hockey, has harder hits"

And for those who think the play is over once you get hit in football.... try to get up and make a tackle after being hit by Greg Jones.

Rarely do you see hits where players are skating directly at other players and hitting each other.  In football, players running near top speed at each other generates more of an impact.  For those who've never seen it, refer yourself to this hit:

Damn, I remember that. Okoye was never the same again.

Now, the other hit...you didn't have to do that to me. It's all good, b/c we won that game anyway :) The hit they put on Roscoe Parrish in the rain was sick too.
