NHL 08

MGS is going to be released later on for 360.

kojima (i think thats his name) said that it's exclusive to the playstation, at this point. things might change in the future though. but still, even if its released a couple years from now, it'll be old and passed on, so there really isn't any point. it's like how they just released halo 2 for computer. i doubt many non-xbox owners rushed out to grab that. right now, it seems i've bought a ps3 just to play my old games. i was really banking on nhl 08, and hope the framerate won't be an issue. i never noticed it on the 360 for 07 when playing at a friends, so i'm hoping it remains the same.

Nice!

I'm having fun playing 08 right now, but the skill sticks still gives me trouble. I'll try and force myself to get used to it, as I think it'll help, but I still struggle with it. I tried for a while on 07 before reverting back to the classic controls (which still let you use the right analog as well as the shooting buttons).

For anyone who owns or who has played the PS3 version, is the framerate as big of a deal as the review on IGN says it is? Just curious because they have been way off on in their reviews lately. There was a side by side comparison done for Skate on a different site and it totally discredited all of IGNs complaints about differences between 360 and ps3.

Stick with it as long as you can, it will really pay off to learn it. After playing 07 last year it was a piece of cake for me this year. This year there is a practice feature so it should be even easier to just skate around and play with it.

I can't imagine having to push a button to shoot anymore. I love shooting with the right stick because you do all your stick work with it too, so to me it's really natural to just push up after a toe drag to take a shot.

I can't wait to get off work today to pick this up. I've worn the demo out and am looking forward to playing as someone other than the Sens or Ducks. I liked 07, but felt it was a little clunky. I was pretty amazed with the revamped skating engine and the fact you ca actually cycle the puck now. Much anticipated. :)

hmm..that is interesting, I was going to jsut go out and buy NHL 08 but I feel like I have to rent it first now to see how noticeable the framerate is, I can tell you I wasn't pleased at ALL with it on Madden.

The thing that pisses me off now is what am I supposed to do, buy a 360 for just sports games this year and then have them possibly be the same on PS3 next year, or sit here and wait for next year and get screwed again with the 360 versions turn out to be better.

Superstar difficulty is AWESOME. You make a mistake in the D end, they pick you apart. Its the first game I've played where its actually more effective in the D zone to stick with one player and play sound positionally as opposed to constantly switching and throwing hits.

i just bought it for ps3, and played it all afternoon, and it's identical to 07 on the 360 in terms of framerate. i never noticed any hickups then, and still don't now. its one hard game though, which forces you to actually play the way you would in real life, otherwise the computer will pick you apart and build a nice 5 goal lead. i love it! equipment options are kinda outdated in it though, my only gripe

Thank you very much for that feedback. Exactly what I wanted to hear. Looks like i'll be getting it when it gets released over here.

For some reason Amazon isn't shipping my order. I got the PC version as well as a corded 360 controller to use. Currently playing 06 with an Xbox controller and the third party software/drivers don't fully mesh with most games.

meh... I'm not pleased with it at all. I asked my local Circuit City if they had it, or 2K8... all they had was the EA offering. I'll probably trade it in at a GameStop for 2K.

Eazy - the best way to learn the shooting with the skill stick would be in the shooting practice mode. Your guy is anchored to the middle of the screen so you can work on shooting pretty easily. Once you get the shooting on the skill stick everything else comes pretty naturally.

Slap shot = straight down and straight up

Snap shot = straight up

Wrist shot = straight down and then you curl it to the side and then up

Good luck!

EA's tech support email may have been wrong. I have read in a few reviews that the PC version DOES in fact use the skill stick (if you have the correct controller). I guess we will see tomorrow.

much harder than the demo.. stick on stick collisions were turned off so no wonder it was a dangle fest. I just wish they updated the gear but oh well, it's a great game :)

still gotta try out 2k8

I picked the game up last night at blockbuster to try out, and I have to say I agree with you. I think IGN blew the framerate issues way out of proportion (although I haven't seen it on the 360 so I guess I can't really compare it). I had a great time playing the game and I didn't notice a choppy framerate or the 'playing hockey under a strobe light' effect IGN mentioned.

Haven't gotten too far into it but as far as straight gameplay goes I love it, I only played 07 for a few minutes so I'm new to the skill stick but it is a lot of fun, and I can see how when I master the thing it is going to be a lot better than the old button style of play. Very realistic gameplay and AI as well, I got smoked 7-5 in my first game. It is actually hard to play defence, you can't just shoot your Dmen up every play with Bryan Marchment style full steam ahead bodychecks because 9 times out of 10 you will miss and they will make you pay for it. The AI also really adusts to what you are trying to do, which is pretty cool, forget about just going down the wing and going for one timers into the middle all game.

My only complaints so far is the game could be quicker, I don't really get the sensation of speed that I think you should get with a hockey game, but I think once I fool around with the settings I should be able to crank that up. As well loads times seem to be a bit long, and the menu system is pretty slow to react. They could also have a better TV style 'polish' on the presentation aspect, but that is a pretty minor complaint. Overall a great game, I can see why most places are giving this a 9/10 or so, bset hockey game I've played in a long time.

I played the demo quite a bit, and while I wasn't a Gretzky, I'd like to think I held my own. I got the full version (360) home last night and got smoked my first three games or so playing. The difficulty was definitely an adjustment from the demo.

Buddy of mine bought it as well, and it's an absolute blast playing against a physical person, as you might expect it would be. The scores were much tighter and the play was a little more "human" compared to the computer's AI.

Love playing the AHL teams. The practice sessions are also pretty helpful.

Can't wait until the jersey update is released.

Here's my quick PS2 review:

Presentation - As usual, new screens and graphics for most everything to separate it from previous years. Looks like there are some new mini-games that I didn't play around with too much, but it could be interesting. At the least, it's a place to practice the new analog stick. New scoreboard is much better and looks closer to a real broadcast although it's a bit hard to read. Never really played around with other leagues so I don't know if there's any change. Franchise mode I just started, but when picking up players you have to deal with agents now (like 2k8), which was confusing at first but could be fun. Wish I knew about that before I got snubbed from a free agent (got offended and won't talk to me anymore).

Controls - I'm still getting used to the new right analog stick. It's more realistic as you can't just fire a 100 mph slapshot with almost no windup or warning, but it's hard to do it in the fray of action. I find it hard to believe Marian Gaborik misses the net with a snapper 9 times out of 10. And the R2 passing, I can't get used to that. So you've got three different controls with the right stick and it seems a bit much. But with the X button passing it's more bearable. Probably something to get used to and I kind of like the challenge (makes it different from 07 at least).

Graphics - Everything seems cleaned up. Jagged lines are gone, some of the models are a lot nicer looking, the sticks look a million times better (3D instead of glowing 2D). Animations are better as well with much more realistic goalies and shooting. Backhands don't just magically fly off the stick, the stick seems to push them. While I'm talking about it, the sticks are the same as last year! Koho Crossover, Z-Bubble, GREEN Synergy, Redlite, white/blue 7k, Vapor XX, and old XXX. No Mission helmets, no custom gloves, last years skates. Kind of disappointing they couldn't just skin some new stuff.

Gameplay - The goalies actually play now! They will follow you to cut down the angle, drop down to cover the puck, they actually freeze the puck quite a bit, stack the pads, it's much better. Now I don't know if the puck is independent or if it's still triggered animation, but it seems smoother to me. Oh, and I don't know if it's me getting used to the stick or if it's new goalie AI, but I'm not scoring 10 goals on 20 shots anymore. Down to a much more realistic 2 or 3 goals per 20 shots.

I don't know if there is new AI or not, but the gameplay as a result of the above is much better and more realistic. It's harder to line guys up for hits and they can move around you so you have to play a little bit closer to actual hockey. The analog stick is confusing so often I'm just skating into guys and they surprisingly give up the puck. I don't know if they did something to the skating engine, but it seems a lot more accurate. Before, every one of my defensemen would get beat by the computer to avoid icing and now they get back in time. Gaborik is a fast skater again! It's hard to say how good the AI is as I bumped the difficulty down to learn the analog stick.

Overall, it's only $30 and it's a better game than last year. Hopefully the new jerseys are in it, but even without I'd say it's worth buying if you liked last years game.

so does the ps2 version have the detailed player creator that we saw in all the previews?

No, it is no different from last years.
