Why do so many person want to become hockey players?

Recommended Posts

Sorry for my english, those are my thoughts on it.

Why do I know so many person who want to become hockey players? I know it's hard to explain, many person think we only fight for a insignifant little black puck. Over the years, we train like freaks to become with big ugly tree-trunk legs and then with the years come the broken nose, the broken bones, the multiples scars, you become uglier almost everyday. But through the pain, the good and bad moment we persist without complaining. But why, why do we, hockey players make all those sacrifices, why do we accept to give everything of us for such an insignifiant game. It's not for the money, it's not for the girls, it's not for the fame it's because we love it, almost to death. In an era, where men become more and more feminine, there's no place for a man that passes more time in front of his mirror then at training in hockey. Hockey forces us to act like men everyday because that's the only way to become great at this game. The worst moment in the carreer of every hockey players comes at his retirement because it means it's time to put an end at something that has given them so much, that have forces them to give the best of themselves every single day of their carreer. Then comes the tears and the memories, from the time your were skating in your backyard with your dad, your brother, your friends to the time you've reached the big leagues, so much memories in such a short amount of time can do nothing else than makes a man cry like a baby. But then you see your wife, maybe your daughter or your son, maybe both and you realise that life goes one, but, BUT inside of you, even if you're still sad, your are proud, you did it, you can say you've fight like a man through the good and bad times without never giving up. You know in yourself, you've been something special for everyone that has surronded you through the years. Your wife look at you and you know she loves her man and then you look at your son, still with some tears on your eyes and your son makes a big smile at you, in a matter of a second or two, you realise that for this little boy, your are probably also the best example he will have ever had in his life, after realising that, you can do nothing then respond to your son with one of brightest smile you will ever had in your life. At this moment, your realise you are the happiest men in the world.

Of course, there will be those hockey players who won't succeed in hockey, some will become policemen, others will become succesfull business man, maybe some will become teacher but it's not those things that are important. Those who will have learn to act like real men through hockey, those that have learn to give the best of themselves in life will also be examples for the lucky one surronding them. And is there a better pride for someone then to be a model for the people surronding himself. And maybe those guys won't become superstars like those NHL players but they will be able to say that they are at least on par with those NHL players because those guys too, will be able too to give the best of themselves in life. And is their a better pride for a man then giving the best of himself everyday. And there is this saying that say ''pride last forever''.

I wonder what it was like to be Jean Beliveau during the Habs glory years.

In lieu of the novel I could write on this subject, I'm just going to (over)simplify things and say "I love the game so fucking much it's probably considered unhealthy."

I'm sure like most people my most favorite time of the year is when I first step on the ice. There is no feeling that compares to waking up early in the morning and going for a skate myself. I'm not going to make the NHL, I'm not going to make money playing hockey. I'm not the best player on the ice but to me that doesnt matter.

There is nothing on earth I am more passionate about than hockey, and I realized long ago that I wasn't going to be an allstar but that really doesn't matter to me. On the ice I only think about hockey and all the stress and problems in my life melt away. There is no Money, problems or girls on my mind when I hit the ice. It's where I really feel whole and at home and to me there is nothing better than stepping on the ice outdoors and breathing the cold air.

This pretty much says it all....

The cockiest, dirtiest, most irresponsible group of athletes in the world. Will do anything just to be able to tell his teammates a great story in the dressing room. Live the dream until they are 35 then realize they never made it. Ladies love us, guys want to be us, we are the soul of the universe. You lace up the skates, put on the gloves, strap on the helmet, and walk on to the ice and nothing else matters. It doesn't matter that you failed a test, your girl is being a bitch, or that you got a ticket on the way there...you're world is absolutely perfect for the next couple hours. Here's to face-offs, goals, assists, saves, overtime, living on the road, cold rinks, early

mornings, breakaways, going top cheese, flashing the leather, countless hours of practice, bag skates, puking, thousands of dollars, dangling d-men, end to end rushes, big hits, broken twigs, new skates, packing bombs, dropping the mitts, wheelin' broads, coaches, adding the letter "y" to the end of everyone's last name, the word "fuck", pick up, tape to tape sauce, let downs, miracles and most of all - the game of Hockey. Why?

Why do we skate back and forth night after night? Skating so hard we throw up. Skating so hard your heart beat rings in your head, while your lungs are grasping for air. Late nights, early mornings, Friday nights, Saturday evenings, broken bones, torn muscles and deep bruises. We skate through it all. Because we live off our adrenaline, because the game frees your spirit, because the party in the locker room is second to none, because you're invincible once you step on the ice, because one shot can make you smile all night, sniping the twine, backy shelf where momma keeps the peanut butter, the rattling of the boards, the feel of the puck, and skates carving into the ice is a rhythm to live by, because its possible to skate fast enough to leave all your worries behind. Sweat is the cologne of our accomplishment. Why?

Why would someone push themselves so hard the uneducated pussies always ask?AAA, JR.A, CHL, US COLLEGE, PRO ... It's never been for the fucking the money, it's not for the girls, and it's not for the fame. 'The Boys' play because we fucking love it ...

"If you've never drank a beer, had a dip or dropped the mitts, your not a hockey player. And if you are, your not a very good one."

Growing up it was a big part of my life, but when I hit high school my dad thought it important for me to quit to concentrate on school. Im now on my 5th year of high school yet to concentrate on it.

Its a life long love affair, but more so an insane obession that consumes every free thought and moment I have. As a male, I literally think more about hockey each day then sex.

"I know you love it and I could never ask you to choose me over hockey because I know that's like tearing your heart in two. But your gear still smells like ferrets babe."

- My girlfriend Frankie.

"Oh come on, you know you're not more important than hockey!"

Freudian slip I told my girl when I was ignoring her while watching a game. I meant to reassure her.

I would play every day, multiple times a day if my budget, local ice times and my endurance would allow it. All day every day even.

I think this is probably the answer we are all searching for, but can't quite put so eloquently

That has been posted a couple dozen times and I don't think it was ever posted by anyone over 18. It's nothing more than childish bravado that most people outgrow.

I have been playing hockey longer than most guys here have been alive. It is who I am, part of my DNA. The longer you play, the deeper it draws you in. Playing hockey is like riding a horse: When you are riding a horse, all you can think about is riding the horse. When you are on the ice, all you can think about is playing hockey. We all know that to explain it, if you don't get it, is impossible. I have known a few men who literally died at the rink with their skates on. I don't have a problem with that. It would probably be the best way for me to go.

Why? Because i would trade my high flying city job to play hockey everyday and get just enough to money survive. The girls, the glory, being allowed to cry when you lose (its passion), dropping the mitts, spreading the other guys nose, the big hits, the game winning goal, the pass that made it. It doesn't mean shit without the guys you back to the dressing room with. Thats why i play.

From all the bull shit that you go through with minor hockey but still sticking it out just to get to the next level and reaching your goal. Also no other sport gives you the feeling that hockey does when you havent been on the ice for even a month, the anxious feeling you use to get at christmas. that why i play.
