Yeah, that took some balls. If you look at the replay, each time he blocked a shot, it hurt the hell out of his hands.

Sopel and Byfuglin were scratched last night in Chicago, some folks thought the deal was done, but as of now, nothing

As of now, the rumor mill has it as: Dustin Byfuglien + Brent Sopel to the Caps for Michael Nylander. Could be finished as early as tomorrow.

Probably not for both of them. That would put the Caps over the salary cap and this deal seems to be to move Nyles contract so we can bring up Alzner and free up some space.

I could see 1 or the other, maybe a 3 team trade but trading 4.8 mill of salary for close to 6 mill doesn't seem smart.

4.8 for 5.3 and with Pothier on long term IR, this would not put them over the cap. Washington has around 2.8M to play with as long as Pothier is on the IR. This also doesn't prevent some other type of move to give them more space. The only way this helps the caps is to move an unhappy guy, as I don't think this really helps their team at all.

Caps are at $58.895 mil, they get $2.5 relief on pothier, which puts them at $56.395. Cap is $56.7, so they only have $400,000 at the minute, even with pothier out.

The caps want cap space, not just to get rid of nylander.

With nylander out, and current cap space, they have $5.275 space (nylander has a $4.875 hit), so they can't take on both.

Unless they have a standing deal to get rid of some more salary, nylander for the 2 can't really happen

My bad, I was using the NHLnumbers.com site, their numbers are usually close but not always 100% accurate.

Tonights lineup against the wild. Caps need this win.

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov

Fleischmann-Nylander-Bradley

Laich-Steckel-Fehr

Brashear-Gordon-Clark

D are the same as the last couple of games

Poti-Sloan

Schultz-Mo

Juice-Erskine

Also, useless trivia time....

GM George McPhee's Bowling Green jersey (with the 'C' on it) is hanging in a shrine to the Hobey Baker winners on the main concourse here at Xcel Energy Center. McPhee won award, given to college hockey's top player, in 1982.

Caps have called up 4 from hershey, meaning someones going on long term injured reserve, or a trade is going to be announced

Alzner, Borque, Lepisto, and Mink are called up.

Injuries that we know of now...

Erskine, Schultz (likely LITR with broken finger) and Green on the backline

Fedorov, Semin, Clark (not sure of what), Gordon (back spasms)

If there is no trade, then Fedorov may be put on LITR. It's 10 game/24 day minimum, so depending on how bad his ankle is that may be where the cap relief is coming from.

Will update further when I hear line combos, although Alzner and Lepisto will likely each be paired with Mo and Poti for a stablizing vet presence on the ice with them.

OK, here are the line combos on the ice at the minute

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov

Fleischmann-Nylander-Fehr

Bourque-Laich-Bradley

Brashear-Steckel-Mink

The 'D' pairings:

Sloan-Poti

Alzner-Jurcina

Lepisto-Morrisonn

Also hearing that Chris Clark may be on the LITR with a stress fracture on his forearm

Word in Maryland's hockey community is that Backi is celebrating his 21st tonight after the game...unable to divulge details on the whereabouts though.

RFD, it's a public party, they done it with ovey as well, I couldn't be bothered going over after the game.

Hell of a game though, love the energy Chris Bourque brings, although his story will probably get lost in the shuffle of oveys hat-trick, alzners debut, the injuries etc etc.

I think given a chance, he can play in the league, good positioning, smart plays, and energy out the ass

I will be there Friday for the game. It's the one time that my youth teams will be in town when the caps are so I will have some of the families from both teams. Hopefully the caps will have a couple healthy bodies for the game as they are going to need it

Nope, supposely Semin and Green will be out for another week...as a Habs fan, I'm happy about this for tomorrow night's game :) but I just love watching that team play with their full lineup. I love seeing Ovechkin vs Markov since they are really tight buddies...they always seem to play their asses off against each other. Should be a great game!

Gets worse, Brooks Laich had to practice D today as the caps are so close to the cap they can't bring anyone else up and poti hurt his groin last night.

So, poti, green, erskine, schultz on D, Clark, Semin, Fedorov, Gordon up front all out, if the caps can pull out a win tomorrow it will close to a miracle
