dsjunior1388 81 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 I stopped playing baseball at 16 (Im now 20) and picked up Hockey. I don't buy baseball gear, but every once in a while I cruise ebay for Lousiville Slugger bats or Rawlings gloves, just to see whats there. I also occasionally go to the rawlings glove customizer and play around, etc. And I'm pretty aware of trends in the NFL, especially helmets and facemasks. Anyone else totally gear oriented no matter the sport?
mgoblue 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 I wasn't aware that there was too much whoring to be had in team sports other than hockey. In basketball, the sport that seems most conducive to the flashy nature of gear whoring, there really isn't much to work with other than sweatbands and shoes. My buddy is on the club baseball team here, and I'm always asking him if there are "pro-stock" mitts or anything of the like for baseball players; he seems to think it's all the same besides pros getting the higher quality lumber. The only remotely gear-whorish thing he's ever done is look into clemson cut pants... which he decided weren't worth the money.n00b.
LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Golf. I love my irons and wedges (Titleist 690 MBs irons and Titleist Vokey Oil Can wedges - 52* and 56*), and have no intentions of playing anything else in the near future...but I did a lot of tinkering with my drivers and putters last summer and tried a few different balls, as well - which I assume will continue once I get back onto the course when the snow melts here. I also have some interest in seeing what the pros are using and what sorts of modifications they have done to their equipment.I'm not too bad where baseball is concerned. I suppose I've gone through a lot of different batting gloves...but my "Marc Savardian" revolving door of batting gloves is completely countered by my undying loyalty to my A2000s.Tennis isn't a problem for me - I like what I've got. I might toss balls a bit earlier than I really have to, but that's about it.
mack 44 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 With baseball it was batting gloves until school, then everything got stuck with one brand. Gloves are another thing until you find the right one, then you ride that glove out till it dies and then you just fix it. For me that's always been the Rawlings Trap-eze. twister18 1 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Slowpitch softball is my other vice. I think i have like 7 bats, 6 gloves, a couple different pairs of turf shoes, untold # of jerseys and pants. It's pretty easy to become a bat wh*re with that, too since there are different associations that have different bat rules. Between these 2 sports, my kids will never have a college fund :)
B19Kress 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Golf Definitely. I always try out the new top of the line balls from every company. Pretty Much just get the new Titleist Driver every year when they come out.. Where I really whore though is trying different 3 woods/hybrids
ju87 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Tennis: racquets can get almost as additive as sticks. The upside here is that pro shops will let you demo racquets so you can figure out what flex you want without having to pay for your experiment like in hockey.Motorcycling: gear whore bonanza... helmets, gloves, riding jackets for different weather, boots, pants, armor/padding, leathers... etc etc. and then there are parts for the bike itself... tyres, exhausts... the list goes on and on. ArcArsenal 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 I played competitive baseball until a few years ago and was never very much of a gear whore. I just bought a new glove every 2 years or so, new cleats every year and a new bat if I was a little stronger (heavier).I never did much searching around for my gear - Usually bought the same cleats (Mizuno 9 Spike), whatever glove was comfy in a 13" or so and I was set. With golf I have never really cared to do the research and look around - buy the balls on sale, I am fine with my woods and irons so I am set.The other sports I play (ie. ultimate frisbee) do not really lend themselves to gear whoring anyway. Law Goalie 147 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 I used to do it with climbing gear... now I'm doing it with shell cordovan shoes. Technically no sport involved, but all in good sport.
fatwabbit 93 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 indoor soccer... got three pairs of indoor soccer shoes, including a limited edition pair I bought in Japan. First touch of the ball was a blast straight from teh kickoff that scorched the goalie's palms... next game it was a hat trick from my half, as the goalie kept trying to jump into the play at my end leaving an empty goal.just played tonight, and boy am i out of shape. I need to start jogging to build up my stamina again and get ready for hockey season.

dsjunior1388 81 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Four sets of golf clubs and seven guitars, it's called an addictive personality.Thats the scary part, because I've been reading car magazines (Hot Rod, Car Craft, Rod and Custom) since I was very young. I could absolutley see myself constantly buying parts/doing modifications.

theWB 2 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Lacrosse is my weakness. I only play once a week (twice during the summer) but I have more lacrosse sticks (six) than hockey sticks. I am constantly restringing with different traditional pockets and different types of mesh to see what works best. I have three pairs of gloves, two sets of arm and shoulders pads and two different helmets. The strange thing is I only do this for lacrosse. I play much more hockey now but seem to stick with the same tried and true equipment where as for lacrosse, I am constantly switching it up.

For me that's always been the Rawlings Trap-eze.Same here, I used the same glove from the last years of little league(adult sized glove) and probably 2 years after... until I needed to upgrade for a few reasons. LOLAs far as gear whoring in other sports, not really. I liked to try different makes of bats, that's pretty much it.I did have a slight obsession with pool cues but I think at worst I had 7... one being a MSRP of $590 but, yeah. I'm down to 4, one being a jump/break, a sneaky pete meucci, a mcdermott and the first cue I ever bought. No one knows what I'm talking about so, I'm just gonna stop. haha. doogie24 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 Golf and Baseball are my other two big ones. For Golf equipment... I finally caved last summer and bought a Titleist Scotty Cameron Putter, and had my own sightline painted on by a guy that does custom stuff at my local course. Its only a matter of time until I buy a pair of "myjoys", which are personalized Footjoy golf shoes, you can get your name/or team logo's on the heel (they have a partnership with the NCAA and MLB). I won a draw at the course I work at a few years ago, so I ended up getting a sweet set of custom fit Titleist 695 irons. I play a Taylor Made r7 driver (which is now outdated by about 3 years), and have stuck to my Cleveland RTG "Rusty" Wedges since I was about 10 or 11 yrs old. as far as Baseball goes... the last few years have been pretty bad for whoring. I stopped playing competitive hardball a few years ago, and since then I have been buying shitload of stuff for softball, which really doesn't make much sense. I have been buying alot of Batting gloves, Cleats, and other accessories that I simply dont need. Heres a look at some of the stuff. I have another pair of AGM 3's on the way (Griffey Cleats from the mid 90s).. im pretty pumped. Batting GlovesCleats
TBLfan 25 Report post Posted February 27, 2009 I could never wear Nike batting gloves. I had one pair of Eastons that I killed and used for a while after I should have ditched them because I couldn't find a good replacement... still haven't. :(

I get staff deals on nike but obviously that's nothing like what you could get. unlike in hockey I'm pretty much a monogamist when it comes to tennis gear. Ive been playing with the same model racquet for the past 4 years and the same strings for 2. I go through a lot of overgrips (wilso pro white) and shoes (never the same, got Nike Cage IIs and Wilson Opens now - a pair of Vapor Vs coming soon too, apparently) because of how much I play.
