NHL '12

The latest games are too complicated.

Agreed sir.

I've been saying that for the last couple years. They are driving away casual gamers.

The last sports game I played was NHL 98 on my N64, I thought it was complicated enough, you could shoot a wristshot, slapper, or one time it. I guess I also played NHL 2003 on the PS2 as well but honestly I felt like 98 was a more complex game than that one :P

And indeed, the control schemes with 5 functions for each button depending on the circumstance just horrifies me.

They had a dumbed down version of the controls last year though.

You'd still be limited to "Play Now" since going into any mode gives you NHL and AHL lines, trades, contracts, training, player type, etc etc. Plus you're paying $60 for a game that you're handicapping yourself in by playing with the "classic" control scheme and getting no depth of play from.

I tried playing MLB 2k9 and '09 that my 2 housemates bought (one for 360, one for PS3). I couldn't hit, field, or pitch for beans. Pitching is getting god awful- Pick a spot, wait, choose a pitch, pull back, get the bar in the correct spot on the meter, release while simultaneously pulling the trigger when the slider comes back to get the spin on it, and make sure to feather the other trigger for balance.... Oh, it's in the dirt... Try again... Oh, he just homered on you, 3 outs to go!

Funny how that works though. They're driving away casual gamers but the last two years of sales for them have probably been the best they've ever been.

This will sound a bit stupid, but they really need to give you the option on how you tape your stick in create a player...

Like, Heel-Mid, Heel-Toe, Mid-Toe.. etc. Why do you have to have a square toe as well?

I suggested that on the forums a few months ago along with a bunch of other equipment modifications (shin tape, shin pad sizes, curve types, ways to tape stick, different colored holders, lace color, etc). I doubt they increased the options on creating a player that much though. It'd be nice if they did, since creating your pro is kinda lame with the limited options you have.

Consoles are bigger than ever, there is a larger market of potential customers.

Another thing that would differentiate the way players look is skating styles. Not everyone skates the same way so they should really have at least the 3 basic options.. crouched, mid, upright

EA used to have a chemistry rating but I can't remember which iteration had it last. It would give you a bonus for getting a good line together, generally a grinder/playmaker/sniper.

i think that was '06

and yes, grinder, playmaker and sniper was the ideal combo for 100% chemistry.

ye that too...but i think i'd rather see equipment changes first makes a bigger impact on the game i think

Yeah, that's a good idea too. Even just those 3 basic options would change the look of the game a lot. They're finally programming different throwing styles in the new Madden game, so maybe next year they can use that as an example for NHL 11. I highly doubt anything like that has been added for this year. It's all minor stuff, but it adds to the depth and realism of the game. At the same time I'd rather they make Dynasty and Be a Pro deeper and more fun to play before they add those little things though.

How about the same skating and shooting across your body top shelf not working so much? How about some rebounds you can actually do something with and not have them obnoxiously bounce around above your head? I would also "settle" for a goalie not sliding on his ass whenever a team goes across the ice for a one-timer. You know, small requests tho I can really see how vital picking what kind of goddamn tape job a player has. Maybe they should go for the gold and let me pick what colour mouthguard I want.

It would also be nice if the different curves you pick actually had some use...the first two curves are useless as they shoot the puck 20 feet over the net constantly. And it would also be nice if the flexes had more impact for players under 220 pounds...anything under that and basically you only have regular flex. Or an option for stick length affecting puck control versus shooting.

And for all that, let's see how it actually impacts your stats rather than the star system which may or may not make a difference.

MLB 2k9 is atrocious - I drop popups like no tomorrow. 2k8 was loads better.

A lot of that stuff was complained (right word?) about on the EA forums, and they say they've fixed a lot of the glitches and problems that people have been wanting to be fixed. The curve shot, the skate-across-the-crease goal, etc, has supposedly all been fixed. You can one-time loose pucks this year too. I don't know what you mean about the rebounds bouncing on your head. Do you mean when that happens to the goalie and it magically rolls around on his head/back, and then when it finally falls back, it gets absorbed into his back? They also say they fixed the goalies for this year, but I have no idea what that means, since they haven't released any info on that yet. I hope there are a bunch of new goalie animations this year. The goalies in 09 really don't look that good.

I hope they fix gameplay issues first too. If that little stuff doesn't get added I won't lose any sleep or refuse to buy the game, it's just stuff I'd like to see added at some point.

I want to be able to choose my player's cup size, girlfriend's skank level, and it would be interesting to introduce different hallows on skates. I mean I should really be able to feel the difference between a 5/8ths and a 1/2 hallow when my guy is out there on the ice. Also, we really need to introduce random equipment failures. Can't feel like your really in the NHL if you don't have skaters needing to go the locker room to get a skate fixed every now and then.

I still think if your BAP character does a lot of stick work you should be rewarded with a broken stick.

I mean the rebound situation you mentioned, but also on some shots the rebound just bounces up and you can't really do anything with it. The majority of rebounds I see are ones you can't do anything with. They're either the flukey ones we've mentioned or they're shot back at you almost as hard as you shot it. I also can't claim it to be my own skill, but why am I beating teams 30+ to 1 in faceoffs? I like the idea of one-timing pucks anywhere but I can see it leading to people getting more penalties if they don't hold down the trigger before slamming it.

I've wanted breakable sticks in the game for a long time now.

It'd be nice if every player didn't know how to use the force everytime they lose a stick. I've had pucks hit the open space between them and it magically becomes their puck more then once.

also the insane number of wrap around goals that go in. Every once in a while, sure. Sometimes 5 a game, come on now.

Dick goals. I don't play online as to limit the amount of douchebaggery I encounter daily, but no friend I play does the cheese crap like that. What I hate is the computer does those little shitbag moves and I've seen them do the curve goal more often than I'd ever want.
