starsfan71 9 Report post Posted June 24, 2009 The Game by Ken Dryden is interesting, but the best beer league is Midnight Hockey by Bill Gaston. Another interesting hockeylogue is The Tropic of Hockey by Dave Bidini.I read the Tropic of Hockey from the Library when I was about 12. To say the least it was a strange experince. The Austin Icebats lol haven't heard of them in a while. :D

JJ Thompson94 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2009 Any Ranger fan MUST read: Losing the Edge; The Rise and Fall of the Stanley Cup Champion New York Rangers by Barry Meisel. It's an amazing read about how the Rangers got to where they were and how those moves made them lose it afterward. It gives you an inside look on the relationship between Neil Smith and Mike Keenan and how Mark Messier dealt with the team and his amazing captaincy. It's really a great read that any Ranger fan must read. There is no bias, not written by a Ranger. Just a reporter giving you the true inside scoop. AMAZING read. SidCaeser 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2009 That reminds of the book Blood Feud. It is about the Red Wings/Avalance rivalry. It is written by a Colorado columnist, but he puts the extra effort in to detail both sides of the rivalry. It is really interesting, because you get the stories behind a lot of the on/off ice activity, and how it carried over throughout the seasons.

ndlancer95 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2009 "The Code: The Unwritten rules of fighting and retaliation in the NHL"Thought it was an interesting read becuase it's chock full of takes from current and former players on various scenarios and events (including the McSorley and Bertuzzi incidents). The Code was a great book. It gave me a glimpse of what the stars think, as CaptainFantastik said.
NickRow 0 Report post Posted July 9, 2009 I haven't read it yet but i think it's called "And Howe". It's an autobiography about gordie. My dad has it and he said it was pretty good. I bet he has a lot of cool stories to tell since he played through so many different eras.

ultraman7k 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2009 so i work in a book store, and i think you guys are totally missing out on some of these 'awesome reads.' i laughed when i saw these books a couple weeks ago, and they are the brunt of many jokes between my coworkers and i. There's just nothing romance authors won't write about these days.http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Penalt...dre+Martin%2527http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Fair-P...dre+Martin%2527http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Body-C...dre+Martin%2527what about books aimed for kids, anyone read "The Hockey Machine" by Matt Christopher, or even "The Screech Owls' series? These are still pretty popular books to this day among kids.Seriously though,I'd also recommend "Pavel Bure: The Riddle of the Russian Rocket" by Kerry Banks. Little hard to come by (even in Vancouver for some reason) but from what I've heard it's quite an interesting read. Also when Phil Esposito's book "Thunder And Lightning: A No-b.s. Hockey Memoir" came out a few years ago, we had a hard time keeping it in stock. Also, Don Cherry's horribly named "Hockey Stories and Stuff" is a pretty good read. He just tells little stories about his time in the game and they usually aren't more than a page long so you can really read it in segments.

sitzlejd 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2009 I LOVED Matt Christopher books as a kid, but I never read the hockey ones (I only played basketball and baseball growing up). The first one I ever read was "The Kid Who Only Hit Homers." CLASSIC!

Basically mystery stories (whodunits) with a hockey base. Not a bad read.
dsjunior1388 81 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 Steer Clear of this one: Save: A novel of College Hockey by Michael Judd- (Not to be confused with "Saved" By Jack Falla)Absolutley WEAK story. rambles on about a low level corruption on some DivIII hockey team, where the hot freshman goalie battles for respect and eventually, what is right. We get about three quarters of the way into the story and the writer realizes his plot is pretty thin. So he introduces a new girl into the story, and then plucks a character who up til now has not had a line of dialogue (hes a defenseman on the team). Suddenly we get three pages of this guy portrayed as a caricature of a drunken asshole. Within 5 pages of the "incidental" introduction of the new girl, the sudden asshole rapes her, forcing bad drama that does not figure into the not at all shocking or interesting conclusion. Pathetic. ndlancer95 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2010 Great book. I wholly recommend it. It is hard to not mention either of Jack Falla's books, Home Ice and Open Ice. Both are true expressions of the game at its most pure level, and are all about why we love our game. Lastly, one cannot forget Travis Roy's truly amazing book, Eleven Seconds about his paralysis.Sorry to bump an ole thread, but I read Falla's Home Ice and I loved it. Also read Eleven Seconds and I have to feel for the kid. He spoke at my HS 2 years before I started there
