All of the Canadians have to wear neck guards. If you are under 18 you have to wear a neck guard and full facial protection. I believe the rules are based on your home country. That's why the US wears HECC visors and no neck guards but guys like Zucker (U18) wear a fishbowl and a neck guard.

On that note, I didn't realize that the X:60 gloves were going to be used at the WJC's. I'm surprised that nobody on the Canadian team was wearing them.

Having the rules based on the regulations in the home countries would make sense cost-wise, I'm just surprised there isn't an international standard.

As for the Kadri link - sorry for not clarifying, my point was that he's 19 but still wearing one. It appears as though it's CHL/Hockey Canada rules for these guys to wear them. If Kadri were under 18, he'd be wearing a full facemask, right?

I also noticed those X:60 gloves, but I think only one guy on Team USA was wearing them.

It doesn't matter the age, in the CHL neck guards must be worn by all players. In fact, in any junior league in Canada neck guards must be worn, or as far as I know.

There is a Jr. C league here and you can play up till the age of 21 and you must wear neck guards and visors. So, what I'm saying is age has nothing to do with it.

Another thing I noticed with the WJR's is that all the Canadians have 9500's with the NBH logo removed completely, yet the US have a Bauer logo.

The reason in Jr C u are seeing 21 year olds is because there is a rule in some leagues allowing players if they spent a year with that team before they were 20, they can play one more year there, even if they are overaged, and there are only like 3 or 4 overaged players allowed per team.

Just to verify, the totalone isn't being worn at the WJC or NHL level yet, right? I thought that I saw a couple all black pairs of skates in the Canada game yesterday, but if they just have the Bauer logo my eyes could be deceiving me.

No, it doesn't, the league is the one who puts the rules into place.

Thats a lie, WHL doesn't require their players to wear neckgaurds, nor does Junior A & B in Alberta.

It was my bad, it's Canada when participating in IIHF events.

The neckguard rule in Canada is on a league by league basis. I'm pretty sure the Q was the first to start it and the O followed, don't remember if the WHL ever picked up the rule as well. Most of the Tier 2 leagues I've heard of do require them, but not all. From what I can tell none of the leagues in the US require them.

As for visors/facemasks. The IIHF requires all players under 18 to wear full face protection. The junior leagues in the US (USHL, NAHL, etc.) also require this, whereas Canadian juniors allow the under 18 kids to wear half shields. The type of shield that is used by each country is up to that country. I'm guessing that the US uses certified visors because most of their kids play either in major junior (certified visors required) or NCAA (full face protection required) so there is no adjustment (for some reason the NAHL has allowed players to start wearing non-certified shields in the last few years, I have no idea why, but it would be very rare for an NAHL kid to make the WJC team). I'm pretty sure all Canadian junior leagues (I know all of the CHL) require certified visors as well, which would explain why the Canadian team wears certified visors.

I figured this would be the best place to mention this... Got a peek at the Sherwood T90 stick today... I like the basic graphics package, and the checkerboard weave.. very tasteful. Pretty light weight, and great balance... only downer for me was the shaft shape was a little 'girthier' than I am used to.

I guess Malkin wasn't happy with his hat trick on Wednesday night because he switched over from his typical Bauer to an Easton S19 stick tonight against Toronto.

Gonchar was in an S19 for the first time I'd noticed against Ottawa on Wednesday night as well and is using it again tonight. I wonder if it has something to do with the Russian Olympic Team ?

Edit - Here is a picture from tonight.

Isn't Bauer gonna be pissed about Malkin using an Easton stick, or is he not under contract with them anymore. No Bauer skates or stick. What's next?

Anybody see those white skates one of the Latvian players was wearing?

Yeah I assume they were those all white (toe included) grafs that people have posted pics of on here before, i guess they are only available in europe.

Can someone explain how it works when players are supposed to be endorsing a certain company, and just switch out of the blue? For example, Malkin is plastered all over the Bauer site, and he's no longer wearing their skates or using their sticks. Is he under contract with Bauer? Does he have any obligations to fulfill? Or can he just do whatever he wants?

I noticed that Andrei Kostitsyn, who was a Warrior guy, switched to an Easton S19 for the game against Toronto on Saturday. Interesting move as he is in the midst of a hot streak. He did score the OT winner, so I guess the stick is working for him. I still find it weird that a guy would switch sticks when he is scoring up a storm. He mustn't be superstitious.
