Patrick Kane arrested

Recommended Posts

Obviously an extremely stupid move by Kane. It is not USA Hockey though that has as much to lose with this being Kane as it is Bauer Hockey that has Kane as one of their poster boys. The guys at Bauer can't be pleased with this. And Bauer just finished their summer summit meeting with their stable of players seeing and testing new product. I'm sure Kane was there. Ouch.

Only at MSH would we put the gear before the league

I'm waiting to hear the full story on this. It just seems completely out of character for the kid. Especially since he plead not guilty (I would imagine if he was guilty the Hawks lawyers would not fight it and instead go into damage control mode).

Strange story developing this morning as Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane(notes) and his cousin were arrested in Buffalo after allegedly robbing and assaulting a cab driver over a fare dispute.

Aaron Besecker of the Buffalo News picks up the details:

"Kane, 20, and James M. Kane, 21, were arrested about 5 a.m. on Eastwood Place, according to Buffalo police reports.

The pair allegedly punched the cab driver and grabbed money they had handed him after he told them he didn't have twenty cents in coins to give them their change, the report said.

Their fare was $13.80 and they handed the driver $15, according to a report.

The cab driver told police he was punched in the face and head, grabbed by the throat and had his glasses broken during the incident."

Kane and his cousin have been charged with second-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal mischief and theft of services.

A native of Buffalo, Kane had just attended a press conference on Thursday with Mayor Byron W. Brown announcing funding for a local ice rink.

WIVB in Buffalo reports that an attorney for the Kanes entered a not guilty plea in City court.

Stick tap to Kukla for the find

UPDATE: Blackhawks director of media relations Brandon Faber sent along this statement from the team:

"We are aware of the allegations towards Patrick Kane. He is a big part of our organization and a team leader and we stand behind him. As we are still collecting all the facts, it would be premature to comment further at this time."

UPDATE (6:32 p.m.): WVIB TV in Buffalo has released Kane's mugshot:

Am I the only one who is going to wait until the facts are apparent before passing any kind of judgement?

From what I'm reading, everyone has already jumped to the conclusion that he's guilty and his reputation is in tatters, and that this is the culmination of an escalating series of incidents involving Kane that were all hushed due to his popularity. Odd that I never heard about any of that until now.

Everyone pleads not quilty to start and then works out the deal, you don't start quilty.

That means absolutely nothing either way. Pleading "not guilty" could just simply mean "not guilty".

And not everyone pleads "not guilty".

When charged with second degree robbery, even Snoopy the Lawyer knows "not guilty" is your only option to plea. It is not a good idea to plead "guilty" to second degree robbery!

Until a person is convicted of anything the press has to toss the word "allegedly" in there. As for me, I'll pass a little judgement for the kid getting himself in this situation. Just tip the cabbie, Cheapo.

I personally think this could easily be a situation where a cabby realizes he's got a pro-sports star in his car, and make the whole thing up seeing a big fat check from a lawsuit settlement at the end of the rainbow. Booze or not, I don't see anyone getting that worked up over 20 cents.

Exactly, I dont believe this story for a second. The way he plays on the ice, i cant see this happening. The driver could have easilly broke his own nose. About 2 years ago in my town a restauraunt manager tied him self up, stabbed him self in the leg and broke his own nose trying to stage a robbery. Didnt work out too well for him

Kane's lawyer(s) will be studying the interview video the cabbie did with the local new station. He claimed he did not know who Patrick Kane was, but he clearly mentioned his name and the way he came out with his story seemed a bit BS to me.

Not trying to jump to any conclusions/sides... but look at it from Kane's POV, he or his cousin probably asked for change inreturn, but the cabbie made a big fuss about it and probably insulted the two Kanes over $1.20 probably bitched about no tip. Add in alcohol, exhaustion, and irritation from lack of sleep (5am) and this is a recipe for confrontation.

regardless of how much $875,000 is, at age 20 I was pinching every bit I had :D

Couldnt they have just drove to a gas/petrol station and got change there ?

Couldn't he of not been a dick and given the man the extra 20 cents.

I hope the NHL comes down HARD on him but I doubt they will.
