Does anyone know some good songs about 9/11 and some anti-Bush or pro-Bush songs?

Recommended Posts

I'm doing a project for school where I'm going to be analyzing music that came out during 2001-2006 that could be related to 9/11 or the Bush administration. Basically I'm arguing that popular music is large part of our cultural history and that after 9/11 a lot of songs came out about coming together, patriotism, searching for answers, etc but that as the years progressed the tone of popular music shifted towards a strong anti-bush position. Could anyone of you please suggest some songs I could use for this project? Thanks!

Rent "Shut Up and Sing" about the Dixie Chicks and their anti-war comments and the public outcry. They never wrote a song though (directly) about it. But, they got destroyed publicly for what they said. As it turns out...all these years later...a lot more people share their opinions now.

Country music seemed to be the genre that really used music/song to cope with 9/11.

"Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)" by Alan Jackson & "Have Your Forgotten" by Daryl Worley dealt with the questions, healing, and National unity stuff. "Courtesy the Red White and Blue (The Angry American)" by Toby Keith was the angry '...we're gonna get you' rallying cry.

Other patriotic songs had a huge rebirth after 9/11 (again, Country):

"God Bless the USA" Lee Greenwood

"Where Stars and Stripes and Eagles Fly" Aaron Tippin

"That's not a Rag, That's the Flag" by Charlie Daniels

"Only in America" by Brooks & Dunn was released before 9/11...was a huge hit and was on it's way back down the chart...and went back up to #1 (if I recall correctly).

BTW....the first person who attempts to turn this into a politcial thread gets warned. If you can't help answer the OP's question...don't post

W.A.S.P. released 'Dying for the World' as a direct response to Sept 11th... an except of the liner notes states:

"In the Gulf war in the early 90's W.A.S.P. got a lot of mail from the United Nations Forces (American, British, European and others) telling us that they would blast metal music from the loud speakers of the armored tanks when they would go into battle. The sound could project two miles away and when the Iraq troops would hear the music they knew "death" was on its way and they would run like the cowardly motherf*****s they really are. So based on the idea of the letters we got from the soldiers in the 90's I thought: ok, why not give our guys (United Nations Forces), a fresh batch of new songs to go onto battle with... something that will inspire us and scare the F**K out of them. Think of this album largely as a collection of songs to "go kill people with".

Later they released 'Dominator' dealing with Bush's polices and America's attitude towards the rest of the world...

Bruce Springsteen's album "The Rising" was inspired by 9/11. The songs on the album are written from many different points of view from a fireman's climbing the towers, to the suicide bombers, to the widow of a dead fireman/police officer, to the view of the citizens of New York. Story goes a guy saw Bruce while driving a few days after 9/11, rolled down his window and yelled "We need you Bruce, now" and Springsteen wrote the album.

Now this was after 2006, but anti-Bush. Explicit lyrics as well, but "Tie My Hands" by Lil Wayne and Robin Thicke. Also "Georgia Bush" by Lil Wayne...both anti-Bush songs and dealing with Hurricane Katrina

one trillion dollars by anti flag. In fact you probably could do the entire project off of them. Almost all of their songs if not all from the for blood and empire cd deal with anti bush stuff.

New York, New York - Ryan Adams.

Not that it isn't a good song or something to inspire the post-9.11 events, but it was made before the actual events.

Matthew Good, a Canadian musician and political writer seemed highly inspired by the tragedy surrounding 9/11. check out his website and his catalogue. you'll find some solid stuff there.

Immortal Technique - "Bush knocked down the towers"

WOW. I cannot believe I forgot about Immortal Technique. Possibly the best underground rapper to date.

Yea, he's pretty solid. And the song I linked to is certainly not his only anti-Bush song. Almost all his tracks are political in some way.
