IPv6Freely 2092 Report post Posted February 8, 2016 It took me about ten years to burn out completely on it. I've been thinking about getting back into it but I don't want to go down the same path and end up back where I was. I'm mostly just tired of the travel. And not even the actual flying part. The never being home, the being thrown to the wolves expecting to work miracles on networks I know absolutely nothing about (and are usually pretty screwed up), and then having to answer the phone at 3am when something I did broke a part of their network I didn't even know existed. I'm all for doing the architectural work but I don't want to be the guy pounding away at a keyboard in the middle of the night trying to troubleshoot during change windows. Enough! Chadd 916 Report post Posted February 8, 2016 Yeah, the travel sucks. I had been thinking about getting out of that for a while and just found out today that I was offered a job in a different department. A little late to address some of the things that were going on, but it keeps me from having to go back on the road. And in the spirit of the topic, it's a pay cut. badger_14 601 Report post Posted February 9, 2016 My mom's in the hospital, again. She went in Thursday for what turned out to be pneumonia and a compression fracture (vertebral), then while she was in that hospital she fell, ended up with a brain bleed, and is now in a different (larger) hospital. She's a mess, but the bleed hasn't gotten any worse at least.

badger_14 601 Report post Posted February 11, 2016 Thanks. I'm told that as of today she's much better - more coherent, though she has no recollection of my visit on Monday (usually my dad visits, but there was a snowstorm Monday, and my partner and I happened to be posted by the hospital when we were called back to the garage to end shift, so I made a quick detour), and they're working on moving her to a regular bed (not ICU) and trying to convince her to go to inpatient rehab for a while.

Bittersweet, and shitty, but whatever just pay me. however they offered me much MUCH less than what i was originally offered so now the question is, do i take the pay cut? or go elsewhere?and 10 seconds later, who am i kidding? i'm not taking a pay cut

MThockeydad 469 Report post Posted February 11, 2016 Another girl on the team got a concussion playing with the 19U girls last weekend. She thinks its "minor" and is begging us to come play at 14U state this weekend. No fucking way.The first girl is still out, and missed a ton of school, life, and hockey this season. No way do I want to know that this happened to another kid. She's going to be pissed at us for not letting her play, but in the great grand scheme of things, she will be far better off to heal a couple of weeks and get back into life. A second concussion right now just has too many horrible risks. It sucks that I get to be the messenger, but at least the message is out there for me to communicate. A lot of players lives have been irreparably damaged first because nobody knew the risks of multiple concussions, and next because nobody did anything about it. Now that we're doing something about it, feelers are hurt, but I can live with that. Please remind me I'm doing the right thing, my friends. :)One of the girls on the 14U team I manage and assistant coach is now completely out for the season due to a bad concussion (occurred 2 months ago). Here's the heartbreaking text I got from her last night:"I am very sorry but I won't be able to play hockey for the rest of the year. I wish I could it is really fun especially when u have a great coach like u. I went to the neurologist and he said that I have a moderate concussion and that some of my wires to my brain cells broke off when I hit my head and the wires started decomposing and giving off toxins which went into the liquid that my brain is floating in and killed my neurons also when the wires broke off it killed those cells also. I am so sorry we will bring the jersey back soon."Super sweet kid...she was never really engaged playing mites/squirts, took a year or two off, then really connected with our group of girls this year and started playing solid and loving hockey. Its put a lump in my throat all day, and I can only imagine how she and her parents feel. I hate it when kids hurt. Please send up a prayer or good vibes on her behalf that she gets well, not for hockey, but for her life and well-being.Fellow hockey players and parents: life is short and hockey is awesome--broken bones heal and we can live without a tooth or two--but please keep your head off the ice and out of the boards.Play hard, and respect your opponents' brains, too. We only get one.

Among other good things, they had some guidelines as to how to know if a kid was ready to play again, plus some education stuff. If you'd like, I could try and track that down. My recollection is that the summary of that part of it was "let the kid's doctor decide", plus some 'evaluate when they come back' pointers.Concussion is no joke and you can't "rub dirt in it and get back out there".Edit: Here's the big 'fact sheet' from that training, which includes some steps to getting back going after receiving a concussion:http://www.cdc.gov/headsup/pdfs/youthsports/coaches_engl.pdfAnd here's the training itself:http://www.cdc.gov/headsup/youthsports/training/index.htmlIt was pretty quick and I thought it was worthwhile when I did it last year. A lot of it is common sense, but there are some things I hadn't thought about / wouldn't have known to look for.Mark Edited February 11, 2016 by marka

A lot of it is common sense, but there are some things I hadn't thought about / wouldn't have known to look for.MarkThat's exactly what we're doing--let the kid's doctor decide. If I have to decide, the answer is "no".My own daughters had relatively concussions last year and two years ago. They each took 3+ weeks to heal. After learning the other young lady was out for the season, I tried to be very proactive with our girls--emphasized keeping their heads off the ice and out of the boards and respecting their opponents. I sent an email out to all the other managers to have a talk with their girls as well. I'm happy to report that nothing bad has happened in our 14U league games--fewer than 2 penalties per game and zero majors. They're playing hard, but playing clean.Thank you, Mark. That fact sheet is very helpful. The blue sidebars about athletes not reporting concussions or trying to hide symptoms are spot-on.This kid is the top scorer in the 14U league in our state in her last year of playing 14's. I know she's wanting to make a big showing.I don't care. I don't want her drooling in a cup for the rest of her life.I'll defer to the doc, but its just scary to me to even contemplate.Thank you all.
EJB 488 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 ^^^ Just as a side note on that. My daughters clubs auto defer to the docs, have to be cleared as soon as concussion occurs. Sidelined, no practice or games, until cleared by physician. I just think the younger the brain, the more cautious approach doesn't hurt. There is also reportedly a bunch of research coming out(soccer) that girls apparently appear to be more prone to some of this due to neck strength. Don't quote me, but I watched something on HBO Real Sports re: it. In a nutshell, I just don't think pushing the envelope with pups is worth it. Hopefully many games/seasons ahead, boys or girls. Not to mention, life, school ect....hockey/sport at a competitive level(not counting beer leagues) ends soon enough, but you only get one brain at best...

MThockeydad 469 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 Well, doc cleared her starting Saturday and said she could sit on the bench last night for practice and at this afternoon's game. She came to practice and sat on the bench last night. She wasn't 100%. :(EJW,I would buy that girls may be more susceptible to concussions due to neck strength. Its that rapid deceleration/rotation of the brain inside the skull when it strikes the boards, the ice, or the hard ground. If the player can keep their head from striking the surface (i.e. a male with a stronger neck), its a comparatively gentler deceleration. Maybe resulting in a sore neck, but no brain slosh. team50 20 Report post Posted February 12, 2016 We insist that our players see a concussion specialist rather than just the players GP before their return to play. Even then there is specific protocol and time line after they are cleared. All our players have done baseline testing to help diagnose and gauge recovery time. Soccer BTW, not hockey.
