Stay Classy Patrick Kane

Recommended Posts

Kane comes off as a douchebag to me more so for this video.

http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?c...35&id=71665

Whereas in the video with Briere talking with the prospects, he was more than willing to share information and talk to them. It seems as though Kane wanted nothing to do with them, and was trying to find any outlet he could to get away from them. These kids are having the times of their lives, and probably just wanted advice, since he had been there only a few years ago. "Have fun" isn't the greatest advice if you ask me. I realize you have a game on your mind, but come on...

You'd think prior to a game guys might be a little more wound up...I surely didn't expect Briere to be handing his stick (and Gane's too) to guys to handle and stuff. I guess the superstitious athlete is a thing of the past *L*

Well, based on what Briere was saying (starts from 90 flex and gradually moves down to 77 over the season) I would imagine he isn't very superstitious with his sticks. Not sure about Gagne on the other hand.

what's the legal limit in chicago for non formal public speaking engagements?

don't tell me that just because someone may or may not be legally able to operate a motor vehicle (based purely on visual and audible cues) that it makes them unable or not sound enough to speak publicly. there's a BIG difference between being above the legal limit to drive and what the law would consider drunk and disorderly.

i'm not arguing whether he was or wasn't drunk, because i'm sure we'd all agree that he was... my point here is that i don't feel that his actions were out of line or degrading to his already very public image. pat kane isn't a poster boy for non hockey related products, he doesn't have to maintain any preconceived image that may be contractually required by a celebrity endorsed outside of his or her field of expertise (tiger woods, sidney crosby, britney spears to name a few). that's why sidney was photographed "riding bitch" on a sea-doo with the cup, and kaner was photo'd walking around the LA bar scene in a yankees cap with the cup over his head... and contrarily, why tiger was dropped by accenture and tag heuer and not nike or EA.

I agree with most of this with one exception. The kid made a mistake with the cabbie, but why not start to rehabilitate immediately, instead of compounding his image problems (from a marketing perspective)?

At 33. even Randy Moss appears to be regretting his missed opportunities financially. He recently switched agents and told the media, "To all the agents out there, I am a free man! I am looking for a new agent. I got this football thing under control, but going into my 13th year in the league, I'm still marketable. I'm looking for an agent that's going to get me out there with my marketing ability. I can shoot commercials. That's what I'm looking for right now — that off-the-field money. I really wasn't into commercials, because I wanted to concentrate on one objective, being a better football player year-in and year-out. Now, late in my career, I'm still thinking I have some marketing opportunities out there. I need an agent or agency that's going to get out there and find those business deals off the field."

I've read enough quotes while Randy's been on the Pats to read between the lines that, while he may have been concentrating on football while younger, he wasn't offered that many sponsorship opportunities because of his questionable image.

Back to the original topic, if Kane gets hammered with his friends and keeps it private, it doesn't affect his marketability. When he doesn't control himself in a public forum, he loses out on some opportunities. That's his call, but I don't think he made the wise choice, considering he just could have waited two hours.

This shit is so funny. We've all done way worse. I GUARANTEE THAT. Kane comes off very smug in interviews and I would most likely hate the guy if I got to know him... but c'mon guys... He's 21 and drinking... and some of you are appalled and shocked at how he's drinking? We've all been downtown and seen that chick from work with 2 kids who gets so faded that she gets sick. Those are the people you should be hating. Not Pat Kane.

That's not the point we're trying to get at here. There are young kids out there, especially young hockey players in America, who look up to him (not really sure why), who probably are now thinking it's okay to go get bombed every time you want to celebrate something. When you're in the public eye, you need to handle yourself a little more accordingly. I don't know many young hockey players looking up to the chick from work with two kids who gets so bombed she gets sick.

Please. Anyone that goes through hockey culture knows drinking happens, constantly. Hell, we call it BEER League. This is nothing new for anyone that's played hockey past Youth leagues.

The guy is having fun, as he should. He just won the hardest trophy in all of sports (Per Bettman).

And the fact that you don't see a difference between rec leaguers knocking back beers during or after their weekly games and a multi-million dollar paid pro athlete who is in front of the cameras constantly shows how much you're not getting it.

Yes he's young. He probably doesn't know how many people are looking at him for a role model, or he doesn't care or know how to handle it. Like in the video where he's cocky towards the upcoming draftees, those guys think he's got sick flow or some such nonsense and that experience of a non-humble hockey player will not have a positive outcome.

He does not know what professional conduct is in my mind. People can celebrate in many ways other than drinking, or knowing when to drink (hint: it's after your duties of being a professional athlete end).

Interesting perspective -- I don't see the basis for it.. To me, Kane looked friendly, though perhaps a bit awkward because he didn't have much to say. He floated a couple things, but the guys didn't seem to have questions which would have extended the conversation.

If someone's behavior is obviously bad, I don't see kids using it as an example.

I didn't expect Briere or anyone of that matter to use such a soft blade.

I suppose this discussion should go in the other thread but my guess is that Briere was playing with woodies in the Q, got used to the softer blades (the guy pulled up some sick numbers in juniors) and never liked the feel or kick of stiff OPS blades. Just a thought here, i could be way off...

Especially for someone who already has a reputation for poor behavior. Just adds to it. The Tara Reid of the hockey world.

Is that not okay? I don't have any problem with people celebrating the greatest moment in their lives by drinking it up. What do we do at weddings? Graduations? Bachelor parties? The list goes on and on. If you have a problem with some guy getting a little tipsy while celebrating his stanley cup win, you've got a problem with yourself. Sounds like haterade to me.
