The 2010-2011 Suspension Thread

Recommended Posts

The problem is that it is easy for commentators to talk tough about how to treat a fringe guy but they won't say the same thing about a well-known player, most likely because they think that it will get back to said player and they'll lose that access that commentators hold so dear. It isn't so hard to talk about pushing a guy out of the league who probably won't be here long in the first place. You will never hear most of those commentators say anything even remotely close about an established player. Where are the cries to run Cooke out of the game? Why hasn't anyone hopped on the soapbox for Avery to be banned?

Gillies deserves the 10 games. No matter how much or how little of Clutterbuck's face he got, I think it's safe to assume that the intent to drive Clutterbuck's face in the glace was there. Clutterbuck's hit is debatable at best but I think that we all know that retaliation is often what gets called in the first place. Given Gillies antics agains Pittsburgh and the fact that he just came back from a 9 game suspension, it was pretty safe to assume that he would get that much time off.

Would an established player have been treated the same? I think it would depend on the player's past more than the name. For exemple in 2008 Chris Pronger got suspended for 8 games. I think that it's safe to say that he is a star player to an extent. But others have received a lot less for hits or incidents that should have costed them more. Ovechkin comes to mind.

The bottom line though is that Gillies' a bonehead that needs to be thought a lesson and a good one at that. He will have lost about a $120 000 or so in two months. Perhaps this will somehow make it's way through his thick bonehead skull but I doubt it. There seems to be very little difference between his IQ and the IQ of a rock and I have to apologize to the rock for comparing it to Gillies.

The whole Islanders management is a joke. The team doesn't need to be moved it needs to be sold to a owner who actually has respect for the history of that franchise. They need a owner that will hire a real GM, something the Islanders haven't had in how many years now? I'm not sure Denis Potvin, Pat Lafontaine, Mike Bossy, Billy Smith are very happy to be associated with the Islanders anymore.

Gilles: Should have been suspended. Was suspended.

Clutterbuck: Should have been suspended. Was not suspended.

Nice job Collie.

Clutterbuck's hit wasn't that bad. He had the guy lined up well before he turned away from the play. I've seen plenty of the same plays go without suspension and even some without penalty.

And that's part of the problem. Dangerous boarding plays such as Clutterbuck's hit should be reviewed and deemed suspendable on a case by case basis. That's just my take on it though.

Agreed. His hit may or may not have warranted a suspension but should still have been reviewed and every boarding hit should be reviewed. Whether the player faces clutterbuck or not, he was still far from the board and it was clearly boarding and boarding shouldn't just be called on hits from behind. Send someone flying back first in the boards when he's 3 feet from the boards and he could be in serious trouble too.

Probably not but at the same time, the league needs to teach those boneheads a lesson. I mean, what's wrong with the Isles? They've got 4 boneheads in Martin, Healey, Konopka (to a lesser extent, maybe?)and Gillies up with the team. Are they that short on minor leaguers that possess at least minimal potential?

Wrong, wrong and wrong. I wonder... apart from that Pens/Isles game highlights, have you ever watched Martin and Haley play? My guess is no.

Does Haley get anything for jumping jeaves after the buzzer went? Probably not considering how bad a job collie's been doing

Not when Haley takes the 1st punch.

I didn't see Haley get hit first. I just saw him spin the guy around, hit him, and body slam him WWF style

Yea, they both kind of came together n the guy took a quick shot at Haley, who then tackled him. All in all, not much to talk about here.

I know Garth Snow if defending his guy but come on. "Then Trevor comes over and tries to finish his check". Is that what he was doing? Why didn't the dude just grab Clutter and throw with him?

I think the 10 is fine based on the guy, anyone else it's extreme, but the nut just came back, get him and guys like him out of the league for good, couldn't care.

That's what I say. It's not like Clutterbuck wouldn't drop them. To be honest Gillies is a useless player in the NHL and even AHL. The guy has somethin like 1400 PIMS in 300 games in the AHL.

It's not? He refuses to go most of the time.

Chadd, I think this feeds back into the "Why does there have to be a fight after every big hit?" complaints. Hitting a guy and then not dropping the gloves isn't "pussying out" or what have you.

That being said, if you cheapshot a guy or make a dirty hit, you had better be able to answer the bell.

Not after every big hit but Clutterbuck did catch the other Isle player in the numbers. When you do that and you're a handlebar mustache guy in the league then you are expected to do the honorable thing and oblige.

He wasn't exactly given a chance....

The vast majority of Clutterbuck hits are questionable at best. The guy is exactly the type of player that is the problem in this league. Hitting guys high, late and from behind is the way he plays the game. I have no problem with good, hard, clean hits. However, the cheap stuff has to stop or the league is going to miss out on a chance to really grow and increase in popularity. You need top line guys out there making plays to bring in more fans, not third or fourth line guys taking out the guys with actual talent.

It doesn't help when you have guys like Mario Lemieux giving lip service about cleaning up the league and then pasting the "A" on Matt Cooke's jersey. As far as I'm concerned, Mario can shut the f--- up and go home.

Disgusting move by Chara. I would give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't think about that box between the benches but the puck was so far away, it's inexcusable.

Usually, even with a head/neck injury you can at least see the players chest moving to indicate he's breathing and alive....Pacioretty looked like a corpse on that stretcher with his eyes closed and arms folded on his chest. Scary hit!
