Ever just plain had bad luck with a certain piece of equipment?

Recommended Posts

A while back, I bought a standard One95 shaft. I heard such amazing things about them and knew that at 54" long, I'd have to cut off 4 inches, which would stiffen it up quite a bit. I hesitantly bought the 77 flex, then chopped it down to the 92 flex mark. Then I took off another 4 inches and put in a 4" wooden plug for feel purposes. All in all, it honestly still felt like an 80-85 flex, but that's what I wanted. Loved it. But I played 4-5 easygoing roller hockey games with it and a casual practice and noticed a faint crack in the clearcoat halfway down the shaft. It scared me, but I kept using it. Hadn't had any big slashes on the stick or anything of the sort. The next game, it snapped right on that spot while making a pass. Keep in mind that I'm predominantly a wrist shot guy and have been for most of the 15 years that I've been playing. And I'm no monster at 5'9" and 175 lbs.

After hearing such high praise for the shafts and all the bigger guys that use the 77 flex, I thought mine must have simply been a fluke. So I bought another 77 flex One95 shaft that had been used just once by someone else. It was basically brand new. Did the same cutting on it, same putting the end plug in. I haven't taken a single shot with it that wasn't a wrist shot. No slashes, no slamming it into the boards, no slappers, no one-timers. Just quick wrist shots. And what do I see tonight on the bench? I nice little faint white crack in the clearcoat right where I position my hands for wristers. Just wonderful. After only two uses. I love the flex and although it whips more than any other stick I've ever used, it isn't excessive by any means. We're not talking Hull or Ovechkin flexing here. I guess Bauer's 77 flex just doesn't love me back.

Anyone else have issues with only a certain piece of equipment giving them issues?

The closest thing that I've had happen like that was breaking 4 TriCores in a fairly short time span. I broke two in two weeks at one point, one up by the butt end while taking a slapper. I was working them pretty hard and using them in a pretty physical league. The first one I had (a year or two earlier) was great for me, though. I wouldn't hesitate to go back to it for beer league.

Hello!!

Just bought two new total one sticks. First use was a hobby game fantastic feel shots like rockets. Second use was a training, make a big one timer but touched the puck not right and my blade snapped in tow pieces. Had the stick only for three days. I sent it back to bauer and hope i will get new one.

AK27 shafts...bought 2, first one broke on a one-timer in my first practice with it, second one lasted about 3 weeks before breaking as I pushed up off of it to get up after stretching. Just awesome.

One95s are my cursed shaft too. Broke two about 4" below my bottom hand on slap shots. And I almost never break shafts on a catastrophic break like that.

I still love that shaft. With the TPS R10, the best shooting shaft I've tried. I just can't afford to keep replacing them.

Agreed. I LOVE the feel and kick, but just can't keep spending money on a shaft that has gotten me less than 10 uses total out of 2 of them.

And I have only ever broken 3 shafts in 15 years, one of those being a cheap old Easton E-Flex (fiberglass shaft) and the other being a stick that got caught in the middle of a collision.

synergy sl. used to fly thru those. got my hands on an ian white pro stock and it broke in the same spot as all the retail versions i ever had. im sure you guys can guess the spot.

also, 8k retail gloves. went thru two pairs of them in one season (30-40 games). one game, out of nowhere, the palm tore right in the middle, then up into the fingers, which i thought was weird. then all of a sudden in the same game it happened to the other glove. repeat for 2nd pair, about 3 months later. ever since then i've not been a fan of reebok.

Pro-Stock Dolo HDs in Belek pattern. Loved the sticks and kept buying them but they kept breaking as fast as I could get them. First one I was using broke the first ice time, it looked like the blade caved in from a shot which had never happened. One got slashed and broke, I got one stuck between the zamboni doors. The other 2 had problems with the carbon fiber peeling back from the blade.

I also went through 3 skate blades over a season of mens league, they would break right down the center for some reason that I never figured out. Happened in the Vapor XX that I owned and loved since they came out. Since I got One100s it hasn't happened again. I've been wary of getting fusion steel for this reason.

I broke a couple of Koho Torpedo blades after a couple of shifts, but that's cuz I shaved down the tenon to fit into a tapered shaft. Other than that, I haven't had too many issues with equipments.

I remember a friend snapping a CCM V120 when he attempted a slapper with it for the first time. Everyone heard the stick snapped and saw the blade flying across the room. That was years ago and I can stil replay that moment in my head in slow motion lol.

It seems all my pants are cursed. They get ripped. Really badly, like I know it's cool if there's a few tears here and there. But this is ridiculous. Maybe I've just been buying all the wrong brands. And I've had 2 X:60's break on me reasonably fast. By no means, is the X:60 not durable, but I dunno. I guess I was just unlucky too.

Every Vapor XX ops I've played with (3 so far) has broken within a couple games. I'd still buy one if I could find it because I love the feel but they're cursed for me. It's always a blocked shot or a stick battle in the corner, too. Fluky, one-off kinds of things.

I've had 3 Bauer HH3000 (I think) helmets crack in the exact same spot where there back adjustment screw is (which doubles as a snap). Did not in any way overtighten, or anything, but 3 in a row.

Never had a real problem with bad luck with sticks though.

The warrior starskie never worked out for me. Broke 2 in 3 weeks in pewees. Bought an endure right after and that lasted me a year.

As much as I loved the performance, the Hespeler Nemesis Alpha was one of the least durable sticks I've used. I rarely break sticks but I went through two of them pretty quickly.

First ones I could remember having problems with were the when the Vector 120s came out I got one and broke it after a week. Bought the 130 as it had just came out and my 120 broke and broke that the 2nd skate with it. Sent both in got both back and even got a 110 because the 130s were on backorder and broke all of them within 2 weeks. Mind you I was only 13-14 and using a Stiff flex at the time so I really don't know what was up there.

The only thing I can think of now that I have bad luck with was the s15/s19 replacement blades. Those things are the biggest pieces of crap I swear. They work great when they don't break. My estimated life time on those are a week and a half. Went through 4 of them in about 2 months.

Ditto on the AK27 shafts. I actually snapped 2 shafts on 2 consecutive one-timers. that was a depressing day.

Also had horrible problems with the last two Reebok 9k ('07 and '09) skate models. In both, the boot started breaking right in the same place, completely ruining my stability and energy transfer. Loved the skates when they were new, but that didn't last very long. Maybe the new 11k is better?

Vapor XXX sticks when they first came out. Broke two in 10 minutes during a practice. Got a third and it lasted me 5 skates I think. Loved the feel, but just too damn brittle.

I have bad luck with anything warrior. My first warrior ops broke because it took a slapshot which cracked it (then gave way as I was making a pass). My second warrior ops, the blade chipped apart at the toe (i tape all the way) and it has also happened with my replacement tapered blades. Sucks because those HD blades were the best feeling warrior blades I've used

Only bad equipment I've used was the TPS R2 Armor shaft. I bought one and the first time I used it the thing snapped on a slapper. Only stick I've ever broken in the shaft. I had two teammates snap those things in games, and neither of them could break a pane of glass with a shot.

Back in the day I got a Composite Branches shaft (no idea what model but it was expensive for the time, like $90 bucks) from my parents for my birthday. The very first time I used it at practice it snapped in half on a wrist shot (literally the first one i took)... My Dad called Branches and they said that they could not replace it becuase it broke during the "course of normal hockey play" and it was not the fault of the shaft. I guess this was before the 30 days of purchase warranty on sticks (at least for that company). Needless to say I never bought another Branches stick again.
