Rules for innovative Equipment that hasn't been used in the Sport?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I've drawing up some plans and writting down some ideas for a new piece of hockey equipment. Without giving away too much intellectual property information, in brief it will be a type of very simple HUD system on the inside of a clear visor, which in phase 1 of development will be based around who on your line is on the ice and how long you have been on yourself.

I had a quick read through the rules and I couldn't see anything like that being against the rules, is it something people have even looked at, or has it already been dismissed as cheating?

Either way, if this was something that could be accomplished at a relatively low price, would that something any of people who read these forums would consider using?

I know USA Hockey forbids electronic communications between the bench and the stands, I don't think it has ever been addressed with players on ice.

Wow what a great idea! I could invision everone on your team wearing sensors so that you could get a presenation on your visor where your teamates were, perhaps with size or color indicating how close they were. With enough processing power you could even have the system do some image processing on the goalie's position in the net and along with stored information on the goalies tendencies it could suggest to you where you should shoot with the highest percentage of scoring. I don't think it would ever be allowed but it would be really cool.

Sounds potentially dangerous, in the same way that a lot of states ban phone use in cars.

Probably no more dangerious than actually playing hockey lol

The issue would be fighting that temptation to put too much information in it. Most players have difficulty processing everything that they can see in front of them, adding more information would risk overloading those players

Thats pretty spot one, and thats why for the starting prototype its only planned to have digital timer display and a small light for each of the 2/3 players on the line thats either on or off. The "Screen" will only be an inch square.

Yeah... thats what happened with fighter cockpit displays... they found that the overload of infomation on the HUD actually decreased situational awareness instead of improving it. Hence the introduction of mission specific de-clutter buttons/modes for when they get into a specific hi-stress situation (for example a dogfight). They also began to come up with ways of integrating info from multiple sources and sensors so that info was presented in a less overwhelming and more natual way that doesn't require as much human processing to understand and react to. A simple example would be instead of having a dot with a distance printed above it which a user would have to first recognize that the dot is a teamate and then read and interpret the distance... instead have a icon that resembles in some manner a person and then the size of which represents how close he is (as the size of a person that you see does in real life).

I actually think the most useful information you could display would be the game and penalty clocks. How often have you rushed a shot near the end of a period because you thought you had less time than you actually did?

The idea is very cool. Like many have mentioned so far....I feel the display would have to be very very basic. Hockey is so fast that a lot of decisions are made by instinctual read & react. A lot of the times the hockey player is not consciously making his decision, but rather reacting based on the practice/training he's done. Where I do see a HUD being beneficial is by simply incorporating a dot system that shows where your teammates are. Not even just linemates, but teammates. They show up as blue, red, green, whatever, whenever they are in the field of view of the visor. This may benefit on the 2-on-1 situations where the guy carrying the puck doesn't see his teammate coming down with him. Or when a forechecker comes into the corner and wants to make a quick centering pass it can allow him to make a quick peek to see if a teammate's "dot" is there or not. But if it's just the dot it would also be easier to ignore when they have more time to read the play. The other thing is look how many players don't want to wear visors because it inhibits their view of the ice. Now have those guys put on a visor PLUS have dots, icons, beacons moving around on the visor. Might be a tough sell. In application will it work? Tough to say. But in theory the idea is fun.

One of the things I love about hockey is that it's one of the few times during the week I get to "unplug". No cell phones, computers, texts etc. Last thing I want to do is introduce tech to one of my few sanctuaries from it....

you could just not use the product.

Anyone else notice the irony of the OP spelling "intellectual" wrong?

It was 3 in the morning, give me a break lol

Who would be your target market?

It would depend how cheap it could be made, its not a complicated system and technology if mass produced it could be well under $100. Anyone above beer league I would suggest.

you could always just develop some situational awareness or *gasp* look around you with your eyes.
