High End Elbow pad Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Rocking Jofa 5044s for about 5 years. Love them to the death but they are nearing the end of their journey. Any recommendations on something comparable with similar quality level?

Great elbows, they dont make them like that anymore! If you want to stick traditional I'd suggest to look at the Bauer Nexus 8000 or Reebok 20K's. Or you could just hit up ebay and find some replacement Jofa/Reebok 7K's or 8K's.

CCM RBZ. I don't like the fit of Reebok... anything, really.

The AX1 seems like a good pad if it fits your arm. Personally I was super disappointed by Warrior's elbow pad offerings after they discontinued the Projekt :(

while I am not sure how similar they are to the 5044, I also vouch for the RBZ elbows. They are light and don't restrict my motion at all. They might not offer the all around protection that some of the other higher end elbows do, but also they don't have a lot of the bulk I was dealing with trying others on. For my needs (b/c league, drop in, etc) they marry the protection, comfort perfectly with a quality liner that dries quickly and doesnt add a bunch of weight by skates end.

I got a pair of those projekt pro stock elbows. Same ridiculously comfortable fit but a bit more protection. Would highly recommend!

I've used 8ks before and was really intrigued by rbzs, but upon seeing them in person decided to go with 20ks.

RBZs are very light and fit nicely but I was kind if taken aback by their choice to use foam on some of the forearm/elbow areas. Just didn't seem as protective. I guess it depends how chippy your league is.

I went with 20ks and tbh they don't feel much different from 8ks, just a bit lighter maybe. Just a good normal elbow pad. I don't even notice them anymore, so I guess that's good.

I have the CL shoulder pads. I know that type of foam. Not sure if i like the idea of it on my elbows. Also not really feeling black equipment, sounds silly but just don't like it aesthetically.

Going to pick up either AX1s or 20ks. They seem to be closest to 5044s i have now. Reebok top end gear has always been at the top of the protection game. Sort of like the Volvo of hockey gear! ;)

You might want to wait a little bit and give the STX elbows a try when they come out. One of their lines is built off of the lacrosse elbow pad design and provides possibly the best mobility and ability to stay in place I've ever felt in an elbow pad.

Yes, I believe it was the STX Surgeon elbow pads. The sleeve really locks the pad in place so it doesn't slide around. It's also a 3 piece pad so it is very mobile. I'm happy with my 2012 Projekts (and the backup pairs I picked up), but if those wore out the STX surgeons would certainly be on my short list for new elbow pads. I was impressed by them after trying them on at Winterfest.

Another fan of the STX elbows. I preferred the 3 piece Surgeon to the Stallion. Both pads were nicely done, and appeared to focus on mobility without sacrificing protection.

I agree with the guys above. You have to find what BEST fits your arms. I can say that for the longest time I was using the popular brand (JOFA) elbow pad that everyone else was. It wasn't until recently that I went to visit JR and we had this discussion. Within 5 minutes he had me in a pair of APX 2's. I can say for myself that I have now found my perfect fit elbow pad. Thanks JR!

On another note, I saw the STX Surgeon elbows on here and think that these look like something I would have given a shot had I not already bought the APX 2's.

Any comments on Warrior AX1s?

great pads, love mine

long enough that I get slash protection, feel light and not bulky on my arms, fit awesome

I tried everything on and these won hands down

little more than I wanted to spend, but well worth it, as Im sure ill wear them for another 5+ years no problem

RBZ, or wait for the STX. I didn't like the 20K because it is a 2 piece and felt restrictive. Tried on Warrior but just didn't feel right. Well, I noticed too much that it was there. With CCM CL/ RBZ I don't even notice the pads on my arms, which is obviously ideal.

I use the 20K's and agree that they are a bit restrictive. The restriction (IMO) comes completely from the bicep piece and how it is connected to the rest of the pad via some nylon straps. That combined with the overlap in padding between the base of the bicep guard and the elbow piece right on the elbow joint means that sometimes on full extension you can feel the guard pinch your arm. Not a deal breaker though.

Something ive realized to be very true is the fact that there is a break in period on most reebok equipment. They all tend to feel bulky in the store but usually loosen up after a couple hours of playing
