mcfeast 3 Report post Posted August 13, 2020 Hi, I want to share my experiences with True VH custom skates as it might help other people. First of all, thanks for all the comments in the thread. Without them I could not have got the best out of the skates. So shortly the story goes like this: I got the skates, they baked them without shrink wrap. I had heel slip and the skates were quite loose. We tried to rebake them with LHS with shrink wrap and ratchet clamp but no help. I was about to give up but in one video Scott recommended adding more insoles if the skate was loose - so as I really disliked the "spongy" original insoles, I innovated and cut 1mm "technical insole" to increase height. I made it out from plastic chopping board and it was easy to cut with normal scissors. I drilled holes to help with moisture and friction (dunno if it helps...). The result = Night and day, there was zero heel slip and otherwise the skates feel now snug and there is no need to extra tighten the laces as other people have noticed. Image here: https://imgur.com/a/rVxBCNT Another interesting thing with these is that choosing insole is quite difficult as I have very high arc. The skates seem to have some arch built in which mean that if you put custom insoles matched to your feet the skate + insole seem to result to too high arc - so one needs to just try something out and hope for the best. In the end the best result came with CCM Orthomove with adjustable insoles. I tested also footbalance custom and Bauer Speedplates. With bauer there is not really any arc for high archers so they were disappointment. I tried also to make big arc manually with hands before putting them to skate but still CCM was better. Also CCM seem to have forward pitch built in to the insole which works well.So to summarize, lessons learned: If you have too loose skates or heel slip problems, try adding more insoles which can do miracles - and you can make plastic ones from chopping board or plastic canisters etc. In order to have more snug fit, one can bake them with very thin sock or without socks When baking, in addition to shrink wrap, you can use elastic bandage over instep as you cant really get shrink wrap through skate holders For high arc, CCM Orthomove is worth trying as you can customize arc height a bit If you have Bauer Speed Plates and high arc, try creating arc just with your fingers on the floor after heating For me, Prosharp Quad 0.5 profile seems to work the best. Will still try 1 degree forward pitch as well.

I get there are some tweaks to get it to fit to your liking but you seem to have done quite a bit to the point that the skate might as well have been stock. I've liked them so far and they've held up well, so I just want another pair of them. True said to reach out to a retailer, Pure said they didn't have any. Haven't tried anywhere else yet. Howies cloth or Elite would be the closest. I actually like the Howies better, they r made by tex style.

IPv6Freely 2092 Report post Posted September 17, 2020 Well, it's time to retire my VH. I was hoping to wait until there were TF9 goalie skates, but oh well. I don't know if it's the 50lb weight gain (after losing 70lbs a couple years ago), the time spent off the ice because of quarantine, or if the boot is just breaking down, but man my feet hurt every time I'm on the ice now. Gone is the feeling of a snug but well fitting hiking boot. It almost feels like the padding has thinned out over the years and now I once again have to tie my laces to something more than just barely snug to feel locked in. Tying the laces tighter means it pulls the boot facing closer together making it almost feel like it's compressing my foot from the sides. After about 30 minutes the pain goes away at least. It's been a good run. I bought them in mid-2015. They have held up incredibly well with almost no wear at all. I think 5+ years of skates I've worn on average twice a week is pretty decent. Absolutely no complaints. I think the plan for now is to actually try the new CCM goalie skates thanks to the 90 day guarantee, just because I've never tried them before and they finally dumped the cowlings. But realistically that's a total shot in the dark and I'm expecting to be ordering new True customs in the near future. It helps that a new Pure Hockey has opened up in my town... TODAY! No more driving to Anaheim!

No more driving to Anaheim! Did you try rebaking? Which part causes pain? I know the quarantine caused my arches to become weaker bc of the lack of being in skates and working out , and my first time back on the ice my one foots arch was a bit sore. Nothing crazy. I have speed plates in mine so I just re baked the speed plates and all is fine. Just something to consider as time off from hockey does change the muscles in and around your feet.

Oh, I'm sure that has something to do with it as well. No question. No, I haven't tried rebaking. I could do that I guess. No specific part causes pain, it's almost like my foot is being compressed because I actually have to tighten the laces now due to the padding feeling like its compressed over time. I didn't used to tighten them at all. Just barely snug. Either way, these are 5.5 years old and I want to go cowlingless anyway. I couldn't be happier with how well these have held up and yeah I probably could make them last longer if I put some effort into them, but... why not? 🙂
jlt73 160 Report post Posted October 15, 2020 I set my appointment tomorrow for my scan. I am really excited to see how this works out. My feet are awful and just have nothing but issus fitting into anything. So to have skates that actually fit will be great.

Lihp8270 5 Report post Posted December 23, 2020 (edited) I’m finally biting the bullet and going for true. I do have a couple of questions though after trying supremes, as1’s and most recently vapor 2x pro fit 1, all from advice of different fitters. With some working better than others none have been perfect. all skates have given me arch pain without either orthomove or speedplates, supremes were loose in the heal, tacks were a little better but on the verge of lace bite, the vapors seem ok but are too shallow. Even Bauer admitted that my foot isn’t going to go into a retail boot. my foot is narrower than a D, but I have a higher arch than an average person, a thinner ankle wrap, and an instep that is too tall for supremes. So essentially i need a vapor cut, with a narrower than D boot, with the depth of a nexus. now lockdown hasn’t been kind, I’ve not skated in 8 months, and I’ve put on maybe 10kg of weight. How adjustable are the ska the skates? When Im back on the ice in the new year, and I lose the lockdown weight and feet change slightly as the muscles readjust. Are the trues so set that they no longer fit? Or is it a case of just rebaking and good to go? after trying nearly every top end skate over the years, I want these the be the final pair for a long time. JD17 2 Report post Posted December 23, 2020 Get Trues if you haven't already, find a retailer whom you trust. For what it is worth I had to re bake my trues after the lockdown. I emailed them and they suggested it. Fairly common. Easy fix.

After a bodged fitting between Bauer’s scan, and the local shop being adamant it’s correct (I take some blame for not trusting my own judgement). im doing a 300 mile round trip to a recommended store this time. but the responses from the other store and Bauer were that. Yeah the scan has put you in the wrong boot but tough luck. this is the sizing that is forcing me custom 🙂 https://my.volumental.com/en/bauer_custom/e1d7dd6c-6857-4b51-a2d6-855d939caeb9/?utm_medium=myvemail

Also comes down to preference. When I got my Trues they spent a while asking me how I want my pair to fit. What previous skates I had, what I liked or disliked, etc. They can also give u different holders, whatever steel u want. If you dont want to go all out with True I would guess CCM custom is probably closer to Trues process than Bauer but I would defer to the pros on this thread to comment however it has been my experience that the person fitting you and sending your scan in has more influence on the outcome than the brand or manufactuer. A good LHS or fitter can make alterations on off the shelf wheels than a box stores virtual measuring stick for customs.

By the time you’ll have lost that weight you may have wanted to rebake your Trues anyway, regardless of any weight loss. The reason being, once the boots’ foams pack in a bit, a rebake can reset the snugness of the boot, as it can get a bit roomy after some use.

Regardless of instep height and depth. We don’t really get “box” stores in the UK. Being a fairly niche sport, hockey stores are specialist stores. unfortunately not all are as knowledgeable as others. im most certainly going to go all out with tries. After top end supremes, tacks, vapors, and making do. It would have been cheaper to go custom at the start. Just trying to ease my anxiety of £900 without trying them, which is probably normal.
