Sparx Skate Sharpener - At home sharpener
dasuchin replied to tamtamg's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I don't have an answer to your question, but I went from using 11/16 to trying 5/8 fire and felt zero difference. It's weird, in the past regular 5/8 felt way too sharp when it was fresh. But the 5/8 fire felt like it was the same bite as 11/16 but a little more glide. -

So if I'm reading this right, fire 5/8 would give me the same bite as 5/8, but the glide of 1 1/4? If so, that seems pretty legit and might be worth buying a ring for it. It's been a while since I've tried traditional 5/8, but the biggest thing I remember is having to put more effort into skating since it had noticeably less glide than 11/16. The bite was great on turns but I didn't like it as much on stops. I think I'm a better skater now though, so maybe it wouldn't be as big of a deal. -

Biggest issue is that I don't currently have my own Sparx, so I have to bring my skates to a friends house. I play 4 times a week, so that would mean going over there once a week. I'm pretty close to just pulling the trigger on one now that my wife is also playing. I think ultimately I just need to buy my own Sparx so I have full flexibility of sharpening however and whenever I want. I was just interested in trying fire since they say the glide is improved. -

Does that mean a fire 5/8 is closer to an 11/16? I like the way fresh 11/16 feels, but I feel like I need another sharpen after 5 games or so. I don't like fresh 5/8 but it seems to last a little longer. If a fire 5/8 feels closer to a 11/16, I wonder if I should just give that a shot. -

I use the felt t-guard tongue (https://www.hockeyvancouver.ca/products/true-t-guard-felt-replacement-skate-tongues) and haven't had any issues with lace bite. I don't really tighten my skates at all until I get to the third eyelet, the rest are just barely snug against the tongue. -

Anyone know if the tendon guard is different on the new SVH? I got my pair in December 2019, just had the tendon guard fly off during a game last night. Never had that happen before, but I have had to replace the rivet in each skate once or twice in the time I've owned them. I'd be interested in upgrading if they fixed the tendon guard and/or if the skates are significantly lighter. I'd be tempted to just go custom in some other skate except that the Trues just fit so well and I have zero pain at all. -
I just switched to a pro stock supertacks girdle. The part that you step into on mine velcros around the front, so you can just unvelcro it and put it on like a wrap girdle. I haven't seen that in pictures of others, so I wonder if this one was modded to work that way previously. So far I like it. Seems less restrictive, lighter, and more protective than the pants I was wearing before. The only downside I see right now is its a pain to put the shell on (pro stock PP10), the inner belt loop just seems to snag on everything when I pull it up, even if I loosen it up a ton.

Is he the only player also using the shift holder? Kinda surprising to see.

I've been wondering this too. I'm currently in Trues, but interested in trying out custom CCMs when the time comes. Do they truly make the boot around the scan of your foot like True does? Or is it really just a retail fitting boot with the slight adjustments to have incremental sizes? I had crazy arch pain in all the retail skates I tried, to the point where I couldn't last a full game. I now have zero pain anytime I skate with my Trues. Does CCM actually account for the arch like True does?

True skate owners - how often do your rivets loosen?
dasuchin replied to Westside's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I've had my custom Trues for almost 2 years now. On ice average 3 times a week in that span. I haven't had any issue with those rivets. I have had to replace the rivet on the tendon guard once on each skate. -

Mine are either 7.5 or 8, not 100% sure. But I use 108s. I have to unlace the top two eyelets to get them off, but this way the laces aren't super long after I tie them. -

I got them baked with the stock non-waxed laces and then swapped to waxed after. Still got the flaking from threading them through. -

In my case, the wrap is so tight that threading the laces through at the top caused all the wax to flake off and get everywhere. I went back to normal laces and realized I didn't need waxed ones anymore. -

That's a bummer. What you're describing with the arch pain is the whole reason I went with a pair of custom Trues. I couldn't find retail skates that didn't do that to my feet. Now I have no issues. -
Yeah, why innovate at all, let's just continue to use the same old products instead of trying to come up with something new.

Yeah I’ve got the same problem with mine. I mentioned the top of it being too narrow and they told me to bend it out, but there’s no way I could get it to be permanently wider. I just deal with my chin not fitting perfectly cause it seems like the best option for a hybrid on the market. As long as I skate with my mouth hanging open then my chin fits in the cup haha. I thought about just getting a reakt cage but I really like the vision I get with the hybrid.

I'm curious why the adult size doesn't work on your helmet? I have a medium helmet and I'm using the adult one, it fits just fine. I actually had to move the j clips further down, otherwise it was too tight of a fit and would squeeze my head when it was closed. I only have two complaints about it: 1. Since I had to move the clips down, the chin cup doesn't really sit the most comfortable way and its pretty easy for my chin to slip out. 2. It's pretty heavy. Other than that, I've had no issues with fogging or anything else. I've taken a few pucks and sticks to the shield, its a little scratched up but I can still see just fine out of it.

Anyone know how I can get a pair of retail True laces? I've liked them so far and they've held up well, so I just want another pair of them. True said to reach out to a retailer, Pure said they didn't have any. Haven't tried anywhere else yet. -
I got scanned for my customs back in December. Is it possible to get details about the scan now to see what size I'd need in the retail skates? Interested in getting a pair to convert to roller. Just got a pair of tacks converted over and they're killing my foot, really miss the feeling of my Trues when I'm using them.

That reminds me, I probably need to do another bake. I got mine back in December and they didn't do the shrink wrap method. I've been using them 2-4 times a week since then, minus a month and a half or so when my rink was shutdown. Can I bake these at home? Not sure what to throw them in the oven at. -
I went through someone that has some connections at Warrior. But last I heard from him, they're out of this color material now. I ended up selling them and made a little bit of a profit.

I wear STX shoulders and the cage hit the caps. I don't think the caps are that big but who knows. I had to stretch the cage for the Avision too. It was a pain in the ass and could still stand to be stretched more, but it's fine now. I'm using it on a Bauer Reakt 75.

Just be aware that the MK5-X is HUGE. The bottom of it would hit my shoulder pads when I turned my head and kept getting in the way. I also had issues with it fogging. I've been using the new one from Boulder Face Shields (https://hockeyfaceshields.com/shop/) and have had no issues with it fogging. I think I've played at least 10 games with it now. Way better than the Hockey Ninja one. The bottom isn't too big to get in the way and breathability seems better to me.

Got some Warriors made to match the Stars Winter Classic gloves.

I'm using the Shift holder.
