pick up hockey (shinny) pet peeves

... recently i was in a game where one team was black, red, yellow, grey, and blue vs blue, white, and a team jerseys with mixed colors (ie blue shoulders white chest, etc)

Oh I hate when that crap happens.. 2 things that never leave my bag, a black jersey and a white jersey. Can't get any simpler than those colors.

i keep a dark blue and an all white. I'd have a black one but my LHS wants $30 for a practice jersey. no thanks.:D If i see a lot of colored jerseys in the locker room i just put on white.

Last I checked, white jerseys with colored yokes are still considered 'whites'.

Also, is is really that hard? Is it so uncool to be prepared for a pickup game when you're GOING TO PICKUP?

Also, Yellow/ gray/ white and blue/black makes much more sense. Red on either team depending on numbers.

Actually, it is pretty confusing when you have yellows and grays and two different shades of blues on either side... It's annoying.

Wear a DARK color or a LIGHT color.

A buddy of mine has a reversible jersey for pickup. A great idea, but almost impossible to find in Canada, at least.

I also always take black & white. Last pickup I dressed in white but the white bench was filling up pretty fast during warm-ups so I switched to darks. Then a bunch of guys came out wearing dark so I switched back to white. In the end we ended up with one more white than dark

I don't know how many times we've had red on white, then the white bench ends up too deep and we send red to black. Then we spend the next 3 shifts accidentally passing to the red guys. White, black, deep navy or get lost, that's how I'd like for it to be.

All the places I play it is just white versus any colors. That way there's no question whether the red jersey is on dark or light. If it's color, it's dark.

Last night we had a guy running around hitting people, and not all safe/clean hits. Someone said something to the guy and he went off on one of these "Oh, I thought this was hockey! Blah Blah Blah" Rants. We tried to explain to him that he wasn't "just playing the body" and that it was open hockey anyway, but the guy didn't get it. If contact comes up, fine, but don't go looking for hits.

Yeah, but there are always a few morons who only bring one jersey that's orange, grey, yellow, baby blue or something thinking it can go either way, and you have to take a few of them to balance the numbers.

How about the guys who hit little kids. I brought my 12 year old cousin to stick practice one time. Everyone was cool with it and then all of a sudden this guy comes out of nowhere and clocks him. He didn't even check to see if he was okay.......................Who the hell tries to hit at shinny

Same thing happened to me friday night playing open shinny I was gliding back to get the puck from my zone of a missed pass when a guy went gung ho into the corner with me and got me from behind didn't even look me in the eye when I got up...I don't mind if people try at shinny to practice on some skills but there intense and too intense

i hate seeing someone I dislike on the ice and they are wearing the same coloured jersey as me, so i have to switch colours lol

oh and also those ppl who decide to play fight once a puck is stripped off them (usually they are buddies and just take off their gear and shove each other)

I'm not a fighting advocate, particularly at something like pickup or shinny, but if I get run from behind then I'm dropping the gloves and we're gonna go, because there is absolutely no excuse for that. I don't care who you are or what you're working on, those are the kind of hits that paralyze people.

Yeah, they think they're hilarious but they're wasting our time and, because they goof off they can catch their breath and extend their shift another 2 minutes.

Sunday we had two reds and a yellow on the white bench then yellow switched to darks in the middle of the game to even out the numbers. Talk about confusing....I'm gonna go buy 5 cheap white practice jerseys and start bringing them with me.

I don't know if this one has already been mentioned. The "All-Stars" vs Beginners scenario AKA playing pylon while the skilled players weave through your team.

I know it's supposed to build character or make me better playing against more skilled players, but that shit got old after about 15 minutes.

I can't stand when the guys who are better players all have to play together because they don't want to be on the "losing team". Meanwhile, it's pickup so who cares.

If one team is way better by chance, fine. Especially if everyone is being respectful. But when guys are celebrating goals they scored by going around kids that can't even skate, that's too much.

I won't say it was a waste of my time because I enjoy the hell out of skating, it just got ridiculous. At some point I decided I was just going to be an ass too. I blocked shots & went after loose pucks like my life depended on it. Knowing they couldn't possibly let the newb take the puck up ice. Therefore they were slowing down quickly about 40 minutes in with only one sub on the bench :lol:

I really don't have a problem with good players stacking one line if what they're trying to do is just get on the ice with people who can complete a pass.

Of course, if their aim is to be pricks, that's a different matter; I just don't think that line-stacking at shinny is, in and of itself, an evil.

Adding this... Guys who go completely offside and when both benches yell "Offside!" they keep skating and take a shot even though both teams had stopped playing, waiting for him to come back over the blue line.

and... Guys who aggressively back check. Hooks, slashes, trips. It's a pick up game!

That shows a huge lack of character and heart. You usually see this with young guys or guys that will show up to pick-up with a handful of teammates from their men's league team. Almost all the pick-ups I attend try to balance the teams and even the lines if there are enough high caliber players. Keep the changes quick and consistant so the "A" line is always against the other "A" line and so on. Personally, I don't see what's fun about stacking teams in pick-up.
