2008 US Election Thread

Recommended Posts

America has already had a black president. This is not as historic as people make it out to be.

Is there a link for this?

As SkyNEWS is reporting otherwise.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has won the US election, and will become the first African-American elevated to the White House.

Congrats Obama.

Some of the shit I am already hearing is rediculous. Are we in 2008 or 1958?

Racist shit and shit because he has an islamic middle name. Come on now.

And I love how we are automatically a socialist country now. Wow, so Ignorant.

We aren't automatically socialist.......but the overall economic direction that Obama wants to take the country in towards socialism. When you negate taxation to the lower classes and over tax the upper class levels in an effort to take the higher classes money and redistribute it back to the lower classes......yes......that is socialism.

Of course is has not occurred yet, but that is what his plan sets out to do. And should there be the magic number of 60.....it will be that much easier for him to achieve these goals.

Oh I know we aren't automatically socialist. I am just stating what I am hearing around me.

Depends on your definition of "black" I suppose as Obama didn't come from a slave background, its just the colour of his skin that makes the difference in the agrument.

Obama's the 2nd - Clinton's the first. :)

...And Clinton was waaay more "ethnic" than Obama can ever pretend to be.

I can't find the statistics readily, but the distribution of wealth in the US has skewed incredibly toward the Top 1% over the past 25 years, so the important questions are "At what point, if any, is this redistribution a good thing? At what point, if any, is this redistribution a bad thing?"

It's obviously not a simple question, because redistributing would affect many areas, such as crime, economic output, educational opportunities, etc.

Thomas Jefferson would like to disagree

Actually, I'm pretty sure he'd be just fine being recognized as White Pres. #4

Congrats to Obama, the people have spoken that we want social change, reform, and things in general to change. I hope my cousin doesn't end his trip to Iraq being pulled out by an eager democratic president/congress and make the whole effort meaningless, however.

My biggest hope is that we come out of the next 4 years with more certainty for a better future, 'cuz this shit don't look good right now.

congrats to obama.

well i guess i better start saving to cover all the new taxes that will be passed. in mich the people voted to pass stem cell research and legalized medical weed. i total object to the stem cell research, the public SHOULD not be responsible for the funding. these are for profit companies the just got a free pass. the state will have no oversite od regualation over them. i agree with doing the research but not funded publicly. as far as the medical dope passing its one step closer to being able to walk down to the corner 7-11 and buy a pack of hippie lettuce and go outside and get stoned, what a sad day in america. just for the record i voted against both props.

this country has too many taxes on the middle class and now we are going to more. the goverment needs to sit down and get rid of all the over lap that exists. i don't have the money to cover all the new taxes i'm going to be asked to pay. but anything the obama gets passed that is designed to help will take over a year to get down t othe people who need it most.

the thing i hated the most about this election is the fact if you spoke out against obama you were called a racist, and looked down upon by those who you were speaking to. yes this election is historic and it WAS about race as much as it was about politics.

now you can jump all over me. i'm proud of this county for the masses getting out and voting, a right we enjoy in this country that a great many people gave to us.

Why do all these big fanfare kind of musical pieces they come up with for these rallies all sound like the closing credits of Jurassic Park in my head???

Barack's "insane" taxes that most republicans have been going nuts about are pretty much the same tax rate as Reagan, who republicans idolize.

Because Obama just defeated the dinosaurs? If he jumps in a green '92 Explorer with a glass roof, I would totally flip out.

Side note... anyone else trashed after playing a drinking game for these speeches? Obama said America WAY too many times for me to not be hung over at work tomorrow.

The thing I hate most about this election is that anyone that spoke out for one candidate over the other was a racist/moron/uninformed/idiot. How can the country move forward when there are two sides pushing against each other from the very base of the country(the common people)?

I'm happy that I was able to delete a good few closet racists from my facebook tonight. Good to see people show their true colors when they don't get their way.

Is that a bad thing? Jurassic Park is awesome.

Good for Obama, he was the better candidate and deserved to win. A little scary the power the Dems are going to have now, but when you fuck things up as bad as the GOP did, I guess them's the breaks.

Republicans have allowed their party to pretty much be run to the ground/taken over by the fanatical. So many things planted the seed for this win.

I'm a bit confused by this, since Obama's platform has been to lower taxes for individuals making less than $200K or couples making under $250K.

One thing I've heard a lot of conservatives say is, "He's just saying that to sucker the middle class into voting for him, he'll raise their taxes also."

And the Democratic party hasn't been run by their most fanatical wing over the last few years? I said a year ago that whoever was elected in 2008 would be a one term president and I'll stick with that.

Clinton had a Democratic congress when he was elected and the Republicans took control at the mid term election. Bush had a Republican congress and lost it to the Democrats. I think you will see the same thing happen again to Obama.

The country has spent far too much time lurching left and right, it needs to start moving forward again and I fear that isn't going to happen.

I for one am not happy. Has nothing to do with his race, so lets not think that. I could care less, gold jacket, green jacket, who gives a shit. The problem I have is that there just is something not right with Barrack Hussein Obama II. He has a good friend, ironically, a Muslim, who paid for a lot of his campaign and its also funny how this man writes a check for 5 million dollars, cashed in the United States and two weeks later, Barrack got himself a 3.5 million dollar house while his good pal moves over here and buys himself a 1.5 million dollar house. Coincidence? I think not. There is something absolutely shady about this guy in my mind and I'm not sure I'm happy to see him in office. Smart enough? Yes I think he is a very smart individual who ran a beautiful campaign and McCain deserved to lose. I feel sorry for his family because in the coming months I believe there will be many attempts on this mans life as sad as that may sound. Like my father says, make do with what you have, so I guess we'll just have to see how this all turns out. I am happy good ole George W. is done because he needs to get back to the range and clear his mind a bit from these last 8 years. Never again will a President have a tougher 8 years than George did. I'm done with my rambling, so I guess time will only tell if our economy will get better.

Think you have your story wrong...

If you're bringing up the Rezko thing - Rezko is Syrian, but Catholic. Not only that, he was living in the US since the late 70s.

You're reaching at this point.
