Mid to Low Level Shoulder Pads

Recommended Posts

I was reading another post comparing a two shoulder pads when a thought kind of hit me. I currently wear WinWell DZL Classics under my gear. I'm in a no-check league, but shit still happens here and there. The one thing that the WinWells lack are chest and back protection and I'm kind of getting sick of taking sticks across my spine every other game.

So the question is, what's a good, low bulk, low-mid price chest protector with some decent coverage on the chest and and spine?

For lower end budget conscious pad, with the focus being chest and spine protection, I like the Easton Stealth S3. It has the reinforced chest and spine and comes in at a whopping $35.

I wear a reebok 4k. It's light and has pretty decent sternum protection and spine protection. It's also the lowest in the reebok line to have plastic inserts in the shoulder blades, back area which help protect a lot.

I really dig my bauer x:30. It has plastic inserts and a removable belly pad. Lots of protection and mobility.

Thanks guys! Those ST4s look like I can take a bullet!

I use them and I don't know about a bullet, but a slapshot and wrist shot to the collar bone area it has stopped thankfully, great pads for the price!

If you catch Ebay at the right time you can always find a great pair of Jofa's for a cheap price. I just got a pair of Brand new Pro Stock Jofa 6700 for $25.00

Farrell's are on closeout from HM I believe...for $60 or whatever, you can't beat them for beer league protection. I never wear the plastic caps and it's just enough protection if you run up hard against hte boards or catch an errant stick.

That's roughly double the cost for something roughly equivalent to low end shoulders.

You get my drift... I'm just amazed how much those pads cover. Maybe if I actually wore a pair that was made within the past 10 or so years, I would know better eh?

I made a thread like this a few months back. I tried on several shoulder pads (RBK, Easton, CCM, Bauer and Warrior). I ended up going with the Easton Stealth S9 since they were on clearance. For the most part, the entire Easton Stealth line of shoulder pads have a lower profile.

I second this, I really like my x:30s

Still haven't picked a pair up yet. Waiting till after Xmas. In digging around, does anyone have experience with the CCM U+ Fit 05 shoulders?

Depending on size I noticed that Perani's had Bauer Pro Defenders on sale for like $50.00. A couple years older maybe bulkier than you are looking for and roughly $20 more but a heck of a protective pad.

I tried on a few of these pads but I just can't make the switch from my SW classics with the bicep guard cut out and shoulders stitched into place. hahaha.

I'm a big fan of the Reebok 4k's. They have chest and spine protection and the shoulders move independent of the core so they don't shift around.

I've always hated new shouldies, had the same set stitched together for years. I recently ditched them for a set of Warriors Hitman pad and fell in love. I found them very mobile with not much bulk. I had to make a few alterations around the neck but I couldn't be happier. Very protective pad with great mobility, barely even notice them when playing

Yeah same here. I took the Sher Wood classics and cut the shoulder caps and bicep guards off then stitched the caps back on to a more comfortable position. I know I'll regret it when someone cross checks me in the arm hahaha. But my arms move so much more freely.

Reebok 6k. Ditched the shoulders, ditched the arm protection. Really just a glorified front and back panel. Perfect for the level I play. Try your local play it again. Plenty of Coopers etc....can be found there.

I'm gonna suggest the ST4 like previous posters. Reason being is the extra arm mobility, that typically isn't there in low level shoulder pads(usually the bicep and shoulder cap are connected)

+1 for the x30's, but I was kinda forced into getting them. The St4's were my first choice but I got shafted by Hockeymonkey and ended up with the x30's. However I'm very happy with them, and they're pretty good for the price. not too bulky, not too small. Good protection for the money, and I like the way the shoulder caps are set up for shock absorption (They flex upwards via elastic, as opposed to not flexing at all and putting strain on the shoulder itself).
