Sharpening Prices

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Just curious what do you all pay for skate sharpening for conventional and FBV as well as profiling? I am in BC in the lower mainland.

Thanks

$7.50 if you want it done on the spot. $5 if you leave them overnight. $9 for FBV. However there's a frequent sharpening card you can use where you pay for the first 5 sharpenings and get the 6th for free.

The guy who I try to take my skates to charges $6 CDN for a traditional sharpening (Grand Falls, NB). It's well worth it. I have a buddy who has an automatic machine (Cag-1, I think) that charges me nothing. Sometimes it misses spots, though.

Local Rink's Price: $4.25 (It sucks, you're getting bad sharpening no matter how many pairs they have)

University Pro Shop: $9.00 (Do a great job, but the wait can be 2-3 days)

Hey, I'm in the BC: Lower Mainland area too. Where do you get sharpenings? Depending on where your located, the cheapest and best place you could try is the skate place at Ice Sports(North Van). You've gotta buy the 33 pass or something, and that's a bit over 100, but overall it rounds out to you paying 3.50 per sharp.

Checking your IP as it sounded too familiar...

RDV went up to $6 overnight; still not used to it, I keep on saying $5.

Lifetime free sharpening with purchase of skates.

Now THAT is an awesome skate shop! The shop that I deal with does free rebaking and skate punching, I wish they did free sharpening.

I think its $5 or $6 for traditional (I haven't asked about FBV, but I know they have it) where I usually take them & I'm still slowly working through my 15 free sharpenings I got when I bought my skates (I have 11 or 12 left since I don't get them sharpened that often only playing once or twice a week).

Best deal ever was when the Texas Stars equipment manager sharpened my skates for $5, that was the best sharpening job I've ever had. I'm kind of hoping the university club team I'm an assistant coach/adviser for goes back down there & they offer us that deal again sometime.

The local Total Hockey (Northbrook, IL) does 'em free on Tuesday for folks that have their Platinum discount card, which actually gives you store credit for more than it costs.

I'm going to have to learn how good their work is, and who does the best FBV around here.

I'm in the metro Boston area - places around here seem to charge anywhere from $5 - $8, with goalie and figure skates usually being more.

Of topic, but do you work at RDV? I was there towards the beginning of the month for the Firefighter hockey tournament.

$6 for hockey, $8 for goalie. Just brought back our Blademaster 3 head machine after our Blackstone Turbo crapped out. What a difference in finish and bite on ice.

Better or worse?

A 1000 times better on the Blademaster. It turns out the bearings were shot on the spindle on the Blackstone on a machine built in 2007. The Turbo was sounding like the last lap of the Daytona 500. The finish was awful with more fish scales than a farm raised salmon. Meanwhile, our Blademaster was built in 1997, spent the last 3 years getting abused in skate rental, we brought it back to the Pro Shop service room this week, cleaned it up, and it was a pleasure to use. I had to break all the bad habits I learned on the Blackstone with pressure on the wheel and skate holder, and more.
