pick up hockey (shinny) pet peeves

Warming up the goalie there's always one or two people who either shoot at the same time as someone else or don't give the goalie a chance to get set / recover from the last shot, it's a warm up not a firing range .

The middle aged guy that can't stop living his high school hockey glory days that tries to lay the body just because of the logo on your helmet. Happens way too often where I live. I rarely go more than 50-60% and those times that I do try for 20 seconds there's some guy there trying to fight. Gets annoying really fast.

The mediocre guy next to you on the bench that you don't know who spends the entire time ripping on the clearly newer players who are learning the game. We all were new at some point. Build them up, don't tear them down.

I just wanted to get some advice on a situation (well, not so much a situation as it is a person) going on at the rink I play pick up at.

I'm fortunate enough to live in an area that has regular open hockey, with a bunch of great people of all age groups and playing levels. We have guys playing college, even some minor pro guys every now and then, down to high school, and a healthy contingent of guys just starting hockey later in life. Everyone is supportive for the most part, and the weaker players are given time and space to make plays, skate up and down and handle the puck, while the good guys who want to go fast, can do that, hopefully against players of their own or comparable skill level.

Except for this one guy.

He's a regular, but he takes it upon himself to point it out to you and everyone else in the locker room if you don't play up to his standards. It's been an ongoing issue, and today he was insulting and ragging on a guy who just started, calling him stupid ("an intelligent beagle", in his own words), and generally being a douchebag to one of the most mellow guys out there. He's convinced that open hockey needs to have an "agenda", and that beginners are an impediment to that agenda. He's gotten into multiple fights with people at open hockey sessions, fought people in the hallways outside the locker room, and even knocked a high school kid unconscious against the post.

As I mentioned before, this is an ongoing thing. We've complained about him to the rink manager, but the guy has said that until he does something truly reprehensible (i.e. something you could press charges for), he can't be banned from the facility.

I'd really like to keep coming to this rink and playing with these guys, but he makes it miserable for so many of us.

What can be done in a case like this? Has anyone had similar experiences with someone at shinny? If so, how did you guys deal with them?

I'd think that someone could press charges for an assault... especially off the ice.

Have some people gotten together to try to talk to the guy (even if he seems like he might not be willing to hear it)?

Another option may be for some of you to get together and set up your own rental time. If "the guy" shows up uninvited, you can tell him to go pound sand.

Maybe have a buddy video tape an Open Hockey session and if the guy acts up and causes problems that footage can be shown to the rink manager?

is there another rink nearby? if they dont have an open hockey time set up, if you talk to all the guys that show up at this other one regularly and ask them if theyd be interested in skating else where, another rink could set one up possibly. The guy might tone it down a bit when hes the only one showing up for open hockey.

One strategy is making it a horrible experience for him so he stops coming. I don't mean fighting him or anything like that. Just talk to as many other guys as you can and get them not to pass to him or make any defensive effort against him when he does get the puck. If you talk to the goalies and tell them to simply move out of the way when he's going to shoot that could also help. It's not much fun to score if no one tries to stop you or to play if you never get a pass.

Of course that can be hard to coordinate if it's different guys all the time and you don't know them all well. Plus, the sessions wouldn't be as fun for everyone while you're trying to drive him away, but hopefully he'd get the not so subtle hint sooner rather than later.

There's something missing here. Has the douche been given any kind of talking-to or warning by the rink manager or anyone else in authority? Has anything been done to address the situation at all? It seems to me that banning from the facility, as much as it would be a permanent solution, isn't step one. Hard to tell whether the rink manager is refusing to ban the guy or refusing to do anything - and there's a big difference.

All that said, if the truth is that the rink manager is just not going to do anything because he doesn't care, or is too much of a coward, or whatever the reason may be, can you go over his head? This guy sounds like he's bad news enough that something needs to be done.

Sounds like the rink manager is a part of the problem. Any chance of going over his head to the rink owners?

Knocking out a high school kid and fighting in the hallways would get you ejected from both of our local rinks.

Life is too short to put up with douchebags like that. I like althoma1's advice.

Getting in multiple fights should be grounds for the rink manager to ban him. Fights at open hockey? That's just ridiculous!

Exactly, fights on and off the ice should easily be grounds to say 'no, you can't come back here'. Friend of the rink manager? (rink manager's scared of him?)

Has anyone actually ever called the cops, or threatened to do so, when this guy's gotten into fights (on or off ice)? Even if they don't arrest him, he might take the hint.

Saw a guy blow up during a league game, throws his stick up in the air and hits a speaker on the ceiling. He then continues to go berserk, screaming at a ref. Ref escorts him off the ice but the guy takes off towards the stands, guy ends up having to be restrained by some of his teammates. Didn't hurt anyone in the process. Got a lifetime ban from the rink. If a guy is hurting people and starting fights in the hallways, no question the rink manager should be involved at this point, and no question the guy should be banned from the rink.

is this rink municipally owned? you may also be able to contact your parks and rec person and see if there is anything they can do about it, rink manager might do something if there is a budget threat from petitions of guys who say they no longer want to attend the open skate because of this guy

If someone doesn't feel that the venue in question has their safety in mind, a venue can be sued for negligence if someone attacks them at the rink.

Someone needs to pull the rink manager's head from his arse and alert him to that potential.

After being off skates for 34 years, I just bought a pair and went back on the ice....was hoping to get into some sticktime locally once I get my feet back under me, but this thread is not giving me the warm and fuzzies!

you're in Mass.? You'll be fine. I haven't had a bad experience at a pickup yet (knock wood), and I've been all around inside 128. :)

Good to know, I'm thinking about going to Brigewater, other 1 right around here that does it is Brockton/Asiaf, and I used to live in Brockton....not a big fan, but probably the last public rink I skated in when I was 14 or 15.

At this point I've just gone to public skate a couple times during this week to get back in shape(sweet- NOONE in there!).....I used to be a pretty good skater, but you'd never know it!

Looking forward to getting it back, and playing some hockey!

Thanks

Yeah the midday skates tend to be kind of dead ... which is a bonus sometimes!

Either I'm really lucky and haven't encountered any meatheads, or I'm just really oblivious, both are possible.
