2009 Washington Capitals thread

Anyone else notice OV using a NBH one95 last night against the Rangers? Don't think it was just a borrowed stick, looks like his height and curve (although it very well may be Semin's...but I think Semin is still using one90s). Picture posted in the Ice Hockey Equipment section under the appropriate thread.

During training camp I saw him at different times with an Easton, Warrior and NBH sticks.

With his recent scoring slump it's no wonder he is trying new twigs

The caps should have scored a few more goals. They had much more chances than the rangers n still couldn't convert. I liked semin's goal tho, no look rip down the ice.

Why isn't Ovechkin shooting? It seems like every time he joins the rush or carries the puck in, he looks for a pass. I wanna see some more full throttle sprints with a 90 mph shot!!!

Lack of confidence

At least he tipped in Semin's shot/pass... ata boy OV!

Tom Poti switches to Warrior sticks...2 goals in 2 games...all but doubling his output from last year I believe...

and Tom, nice Alex Oveckin-esk celebration after your goal!

Was that poti who left the ice in the third.....? Did he come back?

He left at the very end of the second, got caught on the lip on a follow through from someones shot (I want to say roberts). It wasn't a dirty play or anything, just got his lip opened up pretty good.

He came back and finished the game, so seems to be ok

That line is terrifying.

Semin 2 goals 3 assists

Backstrom 1 goal 4 assists

Ovechkin 1 goal 2 assists

That is 4 goals and 9 points from the top line.

They (backstrom and ovechkin) needed a game where they got actual goals (ovey's previous one was a tip in), and I think this will get them back on track.

Semin is leading the league in Goals with 13, points with 27 and +/- with +17 (ovechkin 2nd in the league with +12)

If semin would stop taking stupid penalties, he would be dominant. He's also playing almost 2 and half minutes a game on the PK too.

Signing Fedorov is looking smarter everyday, because he has openly acknowledged that when you play with your idol, you better play hard every game.

I think Backie would've taken just about anything around this time of the season, but I agree that hopefully this will get them rolling. Nick picked it up around Thanksgiving last year too (although in conjunction with a head coaching change).

Preliminary indication by Joe Benanati was a left leg injury (under 1 second left in the 1st), but now it looks to be a groin problem. Listed as day to day I believe, hopefully nothing more.

Not good news because Johnson was riding quite the hot streak, but after seeing Theodore playing his angles well and minimizing rebounds I've still got confidence with José. Onto Brodeur...err...Weekes. :)

Kovalchuk interview translated today....

What if players in the NHL start speak critically about each other, what will happen in the NHL?

"Semin didn't just start talking about Crosby. He was asked a question by one of your reporters... You know, players here are frequently asked about who is better Gretzky or Lemieux. It is virtually in every interview. One can make a big deal out of this too. Let's say you pick Lemieux. And what's next? Will you be blamed for not liking Gretzky?

"Crosby, Kane, Semin -- all those players mentioned in the interview -- are world class players. And each has their own opinion that should be considered. Without the hysteria. Sasha [semin] is proving to everyone this season that he is an excellent forward. And [let them] take him into consideration. And [let them] fight against a cliché opinion that is usually born out of a crowd."

dunno about trade speculation...

he's had something like 1 point in 7 games.

The caps are deep in the center position and he's been lacking (IMO) with his effort

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/capitalsinsider/

Coach Bruce Boudreau would only say that Nylander is getting a "rest" tonight. But anyone who has watched the past few games has seen Nylander struggle a bit. His effort level, at times, has also seemed to be lacking. I remember one play in particular against Carolina when he was stripped of the puck as he got the Capitals' blue line, and he didn't fight very hard to get it back.

Boudreau can say that he's only getting a "rest", but I'm sure he saw that play, too.

I also know that some folks out there will see this as evidence that the Caps are contemplating trading Nylander, a rumor that's been making the rounds for several months now. I'm not going to say that he's never going to be dealt, but there are two things that must be considered here: Nylander has a no trade clause in his contract, and he's not playing well for a team that is deep at center.

Lines looking like this...

Goal

Theodore

Forwards

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin

Fleischmann-Laich-Kozlov

Fehr-Steckel-Clark

Brashear-Gordon-Bradley

Defense

Schultz-Green

Poti-Sloan

Erskine-Jurcina

The caps are deep at center, but not at scoring center. They have backstrom, Fedorov is injured.

After that they have Laich, who's most productive play has been on the wing, and the PP, Steckel and Gordon have limited offensive skills but are sound defensively.

That is a very interesting development.

"So long, Jose Theodore, we hardly knew ye?"

I don't think so, unless they get a goalie back for him. Johnny has played well, but I don't think they have a backup that can carry the lunchpail if needed just now.

Honestly, if a trade does go down, I think it will be to somewhere like Vancouver, who need scoring help, and they could get him for a low pick. That would free up some cap space, where they could make a move on the blueline, get McLaren in the lineup, who would be an upgrade over Erskine or Juice at the minute. And D is where the caps are losing games
