CCM U+ CL Skate

Recommended Posts

Wasn't CCM the skate leader in the nhl prior to the 1980's or maybe even 1990's? And you can't really blame CCM. I don't know for sure, but it seems as though Bauer puts in the most time and money into their R&D. Bauer has hit major strides (no pun intended) in technology and marketing.

This new CCM skate will capture the market in short time.

I don't think this skate will exactly "capture" the market, but should be an excellent skate that will do well compared to the disaster V10 models. It is not a Bauer clone, but a very different skate that will deserve a serious look. Finally, a nice looking CCM as well.

There is no doubt that Bauer holds the market on skates today and in my personal opinion they make very good skates. I an old CCM guy from the seventies and eighties and loved the Tack skate and wouldn't settle on anything else. Over time I converted to Easton because the fit was very similar to CCM and I found the skates more protective. But if push came to shove and I couldn't get Eastons anymore I'd quite honestly go to a Bauer skate. CCM/Reebok are making strides to come back for a bigger piece of the market but their not quite there yet. Only time will tell if they can make a decent recovery.

They were a pretty comfortable skate out of the box. Once they were baked they felt MUCH better. In regards to the heel lock - it kept one of my heels locked in. In my other foot my heel was able to completely lift off the footbed. The CCM rep said it could be modified to accommodate my odd shape heel. They look amazing though

When you say that the 12s are the same skate as the CL, how similar are we talking?

Same exact skate. As our rep put it -

CL is handmade in Canada. These will be overlooked everywhere and any imperfection would toss skate out.

12 is production line made in Taiwain or some place in Asia. General view of skate, if that, tossed in box and shipped out.

Ok so same specs but different process?

Skate buyer's guide in the latest issue of THN has the CL and 12. It looks like the differences are in the liner and the material for the outsole.

Here are the spec differences -

Quarter: U Foam Pro - more reactive when heated and stiffer

Outsole: Higher end carbon, lighter and stiffer

Liner: Additional grip and heel lock

Insole: Lighter, additional ventilation

Yes, I would've but they had 6-9.5.

I don't think anyone stuck with them through the game - the skates were brand new and made for the event, as opposed to 11k which were already broken-in and worn by several in the game.

Length was fine for me, but not quite enough depth. They just weren't going to fit me and it didn't make sense to wear them knowing I was going to have a problem.

I tried them on, had them baked and sharpened, but only ended up using them for about 5 minutes in the warmups. They only had D widths in both the U+ CL and 11K and I'd need at least an E in either. The rep told me as much when he measured my feet with the Brannock - he said I'd need to try the E's in the U+ and probably the EE's in the 11Ks and even then may have required customs for those skates to work. The 11K's were too tight in the forefoot area and the lacing pattern on the U+'s was so wide I couldn't lace up the top eyelet (and could barely get the second from the top done up). The length wasn't the issue and the U+ CL felt better in the forefoot area than the 11Ks. I may have given them a longer try if the 7.5EE TotalOne's didn't fit so much better for me without baking.

"Oh, no, but see, the rep said..."

Then why didn't you make an ass out of me earlier when it was clearly obvious I was saying both were the same skate? When both were tried on, examined side-by-side for atleast 20 minutes, and talking to the rep, it was the same exact skate. I literally could not tell any difference between the two besides a number or letters on the upper quarter. I was half tempted to weigh them, as they felt identical in my hands, my buddies hands, and the owner's hands. And when a guy who is getting paid to know the skate tells you they're the same... come on. It makes me extremely skeptical that they are different, despite what the catalog says. That stuff changes all the time from catalog to shelves. Look at the EQ3. Did you get that information from the catalog they gave you or was it from a rep at the msh skate? If the latter than I'd believe it... if the former than it makes me think you haven't seen the 12 in person.

Can DS or pmurph back me up on this? Despite you being the owner of this site, it still makes me ehh considering i know what I was told and what I felt and saw. Unless ofcourse in June the plan was to have them be the same skate then they decided to change it and he didn't get the memo, or vice versa where you didn't get the memo.

They are different in terms of build. I was talking to Andrew Stewart, the gentleman mentioned in The Hockey News Skate Buyers Guide and asked for differences when I saw the two skates in NYC. I was kind of surprised to read your statement. Your rep deserves a knock on the head.

palmface emotion

so then the differences mentioned in the catalog (and here) are the true differences between the skates? The CL is still Canadian hand-made while the 12 is Tawain or somewhere factory made? I feel bad, man. If this is the case, which it looks like it is, sorry. I was going off what I was told.

haven't bought a new pair of skates in quite a while.

how do the u+ or other newer ccm's compare in sizing to the tacks?

(i still am using an old pair of 852 tacks in an 'E' width).

i know the old bauers in a 'EE' width were too narrow and the 'E' width tacks fit my feet the best. is ccm still sized around the same - if not is there anyone with a wider skate now?
