buying top of the line PANTS

Recommended Posts

I wanted to ask your personal opinion about some hockey pants. My current gear is 3k pants, x:60 shin/should/elbow pads and stick, m11 helmet, supreme one70 skates, and one75 gloves. I was thinking about getting the x:60 pants but my only concern is that they do not have buttons and will they stay up? I'm 6'1 200 lbs. I also like the s19 but heard the stitching comes apart easily and I like the CCM U+ pro pants as well. I am a Bauer man but am open to suggestions on what you thinks the best pants are in terms of lightness and mobility as well as protection. Thanks.

As long as the waist is a reasonable fit, they should stay up with no problem. They have a belt you can tighten, and it sits right above the hips.

Lightness and Protection will always be a trade off to some extent. I have One90s and they have the buttons. Unless you're playing a high level of hockey I would just get X:40s or something midrange if you want them light. Like I said I have the One90s and they have more padding then necessary IMO, and lower end is probably lighter due to less padding

I agree with double D. I don't think it is wise to buy top of the line pants because the padding is often excessive and the pants are heavier than they should be. I was given a pair of top of the line pants from my team a couple years ago. I no longer play serious hockey so I took out all the padding in the legs, separated the hard and soft stuff and just put the soft padding back in. My pants are so light now and they still protect me as much as I need them to.

If you're thinking about top of the line pants, go with Tackla 9000s. Fantastic protection and they break in to the point where you forget you have pants on.

I second that. Nobody makes hockey pants like Tackla.

I think the X-40's would be a very good buy if you like Bauer products. As the previous poster said the higher up the ladder you go, the more protection you get, but, then with the extra protection you get extra weight which could be detrimental to your game. The 40's are a nice compromise between protection and weight. The Tackla 951's, Reebok 7K's and Easton S-13's and Warrior Husslers might also be pants to look at but as I've said the 40's are a decent pant in the brand you prefer. Hope this helps.

I have X:40 pants and honestly these are the best for your dollar, very similar to the X:60 feel without the price

Get the Vapor XXXX40's bud....best pants I have ever worn...I have had tackla's and like the 40's much better.By the way, if you buy the right size, they will not fall down, they are like wearing a girdle with shell! Cheers!

I have x60's and dont notice them being bulky or heavy. I bought them for the extra hip padding compared to previous years Bauers. If I had to do it again I would still buy these pants.

That was my exact situation....had worn 951's for ever.....Mind you I got a clearance deal on the X40's....but I would pay full price for them knowing what I know now!Pull the trigger on the X40's or X60's, and you will not regret it!

Good Luck! Let us know how it turns out? Cheers!

I've never been a fan of them. The upper models aren't that much more and are a much more protective pant.

if bulk is a concern but your still looking for good protection then i would suggest the x60's. i own the x60 girdle and its extremely light, and i can't say i notice any lack of protection. the spine guard is fantastic. hip padding is great if its fitted properly (i've worn them too loose a couple of times and when they slide down just a tad is when you really feel it).

I will put my vote for the X:60 pants. Great protection around the hips (main point why I got them), great mobility and with the forward flex profile and the segmented kidney/spine protection, it easily flexes to your body movements. Also, it's got an internal pant belt that will be snug against your body vs the CCM pants which is just a padded exterior belt.

I have the x:60 pants and I love them, before I was using some NikeBauer COMP or something like that. For me using the x:60 pants was a great buy and was definately worth the money! Even though they don't have the buttons I used suspendors for a while and they worked fine.

I've always used some pretty bulky gear but now I'm beginning to think if I try to trim down some of my equipment or maybe start wearing equipment with more mobility minded design it may help me get around a little better on the ice...

Right now I'm wearing the Easton ST16's, and I love them because I don't feel anything on the ice whether it be a big hipcheck along the boards or getting tagged with a puck in front of the net.

Are there any pants that provide a similar fit and come close to this level of protection with increased mobility?

I second the Tackla pants suggestion

I wear the Tackla 9000 with the zippers

IMO for me, Tackla is better than any of the other brands out there.

In my experience, the people who play a lot wear Tackla..

I recently bought new pants and tried a bunch on, I was also looking for great mobility with still decent protection. I tried on the X60s and X40s and I don't agree that they're super similar, the X60s felt much more comfortable, mobile and protective, they seemed like a far better pant to me. I couldn't afford the X60s though, and I actually liked both the 5K and S13 a lot better than the X40s (both were cheaper too), ended up going with the 5K which I felt had fantastic mobility and seems to have very good protection too. So far I'm totally happy with my purchase.
